In general opera is downright athletic! Opera combines acting (moving about on a stage), sometimes taking actions like climbing stairs-holding on to precarious places on the stage-and singing, as you are hearing. Standing is best because it positions the body to fully expand the lungs. But opera singers train as singers and as athletes so they have the endurance and reserves (respiratory and endurance) to act comfortably while singing. Delving into classical music is indeed a deep dive but you don’t need to learn everything to get something valuable out of the journey. For example, what we call “classical music” today was yesterday’s popnm music (with the exception of sacred-church-music). There is a direct line from music of the past to 20th century folk and pop music to jazz to rock & roll… Tracing that line back can bring entire new levels of understanding to “modern” pop/rock. Some of the things you’ve expressed delight in-they were mastered in the 1600s Germany by JS Bach, and spread out from there influencing other composers as music spread and evolved. And Bach also was influenced-we can trace back centuries of influence prior, but… An aria (ah ree uh) is a song. Musical terms are almost always in Italian; opera is generally in Italian-unless the composer chose to go against custom. An Opera tells a story (true or fanciful) and consists of a significant musical opening called an overture, and a series of arias-some of which are solos, some duets, and so on-and choral pieces, either as bridges or songs in their own right, through which the story of the opera is told. A set-or different sets-get switched in as the story advances. There is usually one or two intermissions during a performance. The way opera sounded evolved over the centuries. Renaissance opera has one type of sound (Monteverdi), Baroque opera another (Handel), Classical opera yet another (Mozart-there’s nothing like a Mozart opera), Romantic (Opera’s heyday: Puccini, Wagner), Modern & Contemporary. Into this mix is operetta: essentially a composition as robust as an opera but written to be sung by standing performers, not acted in costumes. Handel wrote many wonderful operettas-the famous Hallelujah chorus comes from one of them. Gilbert & Sullivan are credited with many “light operas,” something between a play and a small scale opera (Opera had grown into huge, expensive productions, telling Grand stories-sometimes about small subjects, but GRAND stories. G&S was more “Wednesday Night” in scale. An example of a modern equivalent is Copland’s “In The Beginning”, an a cappella piece for mezzo-Soprano and SATB chorus (a personal favorite both because it’s a wonderful piece of music and because I was part of the concert choir that performed this in Lincoln Center some #&@$y years ago and it’s a very good memory…

You're thinking of one of the other three tenors, Placido Domingo, who was born in Spain but lived in Mexico from the age of 8 where he studied music and began his career in the 1960s. Opera is worth exploring, there are lots of amazing opera songs that can take you on a fantastic journey. People of my generation, Gen X, are more familiar with opera than we know thanks to Bugs Bunny. Bugs Bunny cartoons have a lot of opera in them and I still will hear an opera and think "OMG that's from that episode of Bugs Bunny where blah blah blah..." So I like opera because I grew up with it. In LA, the LA Philharmonic puts on a show at the Hollywood Bowl where they play the opera music to Bugs Bunny cartoons on the screen. It's awesome. This particular performance always brings tears to my eyes because it's very emotional even though I don't speak Italian, it's the music, the voice, the grandeur of it. I think you would enjoy exploring a little opera. Queen of the Night from The Magic Flute, Habanera from Carmen, Adagio by Il Divo, Libiano from La Traviata, and Die Fledermaus by Johann Sebastian Bach are good places to start, or maybe start with some clips from The Three Tenors concerts.

So she did the performance without being able to practice with.the other muscians or for them to even shift it into a key more comfortable for her. She hit it out of the park with an arrangement that was made for a male tenor! The low notes that she hits are ridiculous. Absolutely worth a reaction. In case you want to know the meaning: there was a princess who sworn to marry the man who could solve her 3 riddles. Nobody could, except one unknown man. But the princess changed her mind and turned him down. The man then said that he had a riddle of his own. If she could say his name before dawn, she didn't have to marry him. A bit like the Rumpelstiltskin fairytale. She got angry because why would she marry a man if she doesn't even know his name, you know? She said to her people that nobody was allowed to sleep until someone could tell her the guy's name. You guessed it: Pavarotti sings the part of the unknown man, and he sings a serenade, a song to charm the princess. That is why the song begins with "No one must sleep". Then he sings about his mystery: "No one will know my name". Then he ends with: "At dawn, I will win."

Friend, please stop calling yourself stupid; you're most definitely not! Ignorant of many things? Of course! All of us are because no one knows everything. You're here being fearless to experience unfamiliar things and openly express your impressions and emotional impressions. You have a distinct point of view and express yourself clearly. Having that ability to communicate your thoughts and feelings is a strength and skill. Many of the words that you struggled with pronouncing are musical terms in Italian and unless you've played an instrument or learned to speak Italian, you're simply going to struggle with pronunciation. It's not a fault; you're learning. Opera is a genre that requires some basic knowledge in order to be able truly appreciate it deeply. Think about a sport (football, soccer, gymnastics, etc.) If you don't know the rules of the game, it's a mystery as to how and why the actions in front of you are taking place. It's the same with opera. There are lots of books that give introductory knowledge about the history, traditions, and performance practice (which changes over time). A little bit of deeper study would take you a long way in being able to understand and enjoy the experience. I often encourage people to consider the physicality of singing opera. Most of the excellent singers are quite athletic (in spite of the stereotypical perception of the zaftig woman in a horned helmet) as it takes your entire body to truly sing these challenging pieces. Here's a couple of links to give you an entry point (of course, only if you're interested!): www.kennedy-center.org/education/resources-for-educators/classroom-resources/media-and-interactives/media/opera/understanding-opera/ and www.eno.org/discover-opera/the-beginners-guide-to-opera/ There's the language barrier which opera companies try to mitigate by providing supertitles (or subtitles in videos). When I'm seeing an unfamiliar opera, I typically find and read a synopsis first and then find the libretto (Italian for the text/transcript of the lyrics) While I can pronounce words in several languages, I'm not fluent in any but English, so if it's in another language, I look up and find a translation to read. And then I get at least one recording of it and listen to it several times over. This way, when I'm at a live performance I'm able to pay attention to the physical performance more than trying to comprehend the text. As for sitting not being OK for performing, that depends. Of course it's more ideal to stand and sing, but when you're performing an opera, you're acting as well as singing and sometimes that means you're sitting or climbing stairs or dancing or kneeling or lying on the floor and trying to get up on your feet! One must develop the skills to be able to manage the required movement and blocking to act, move, and sing. If you want to try listening to a female voice, you can try Dame Joan Sutherland's "Caro Nome" [KA-roe NO-may] which translates to "sweet name", from the opera Rigoletto by Verdi. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJOYl2mDjs2pqq8 Here's a summary of the opera with an English translation of this aria (AH-ree-ah - translated, it means "air" or breath): www.liveabout.com/verdis-caro-nome-lyrics-724321 Alternatively, you can try Der Holle Rache ( DARE HUH-la RA-kuh - sort of. There are sounds that we don't use much in English. In German it translates to "Hell's Revenge") from the Magic Flute by Mozart. She was what is known as a "coloratura" soprano which means she's adept with vocal agility. You'll hear it in both recordings. Anyway, that's enough of a lecture! I truly enjoy watching your commentary and willingness to try various genres.

Which was the organ in the photo or played on an organ like the one in the photo. You very likely herd part of this song in a horror movie. As it is a haunting song. This song sounds good not matter how it’s played. But on a huge organ in a large auditorium with all those octaves and the reverb from all that space; the song is at its best. Bach seems to have composed it just for this type of environment. If you are open to Opera, how about classical music from Bach? A man who may be the greatest documented composer of history.

This is your first opera experience. It’s okay. You did fine. Whenever cartoons like Bugs Bunny depict the classic Italian opera tenor, this is how they look and sound. Takes years and years for breath control and articulation for beauty and emotion. Opera is musical soap opera. To be honest, operas do not have the best plots for modern audiences. Definitely not politically correct. But there are other arias by tenors you can listen to. KZbin has full operas with English subtitles to follow along. That is how everyone learns. The opera music was the height of the best composers meet the best singers. Do not denigrate yourself. Opera singers are just people like you and me except they have trained voices.
