Believe or not there taught ,to do that growl and swipe at the stick, that s why it a very thing bendable stick, the little string wipe is same thing, as you saw he’d use the real thing stick, to get them to swat at it and growl, it’s part of the show, it would be boring if they didn’t seem like they were vicious and just did all the tricks. I found out that it's part of the act, actually. Princess is supposed to come off as vicious in the act. He did that in every show. He'd let Princess corner him, he'd fall back against the cage and ask the audience "Are you scared?!" Only took me until recently to discover this ._. I recorded the same act. I also notice that the lions growling were trained to growl to scare the audience into thinking they'd attack.

***** also, as I've said in other comments, CIRCUSES TREAT CATS WELL NOW!! also no shit theyre upset, but growling is their way of communication. When we say something like "ugh stop this sucks" it doesn't mean I'm going to eat my English teacher, it means I don't like writing essays. Obviously you don't know much about big cats if you think a few swipes and some growls and aggresive advances mean they are seriously upset. Its all about knowing their language. I've actually spent some times up close with big cats, and when one growled at me I literally ran as fast as I could out of the cage, but then the mentor/tour guide tackled the lion and they playfully wrestled with the big boy for a while. These cats aren't actually that bad. In the wild if they are hungry and you are near their pride, they will end you. But they're social creatures, with different standards and different forms of communication. Just let them show you how they act, and they will be patient with you. Of course they will eat you if they're hungry. Because they know you're not a lion, but they're not evil haha. Thanks for reading this wall of text and acknowledging what I'm trying to say.
