While I realize it wasn't a bent crank shaft, I can't believe the shop told him there was nothing they could do!! Years ago I took my mower, after hitting a piece of steel and bending the crankshaft, to my local repair shop and they straightened the crank with no problems!! Good video, good info!!

That was the old days, repair shops are parts changers not Mechanics anymore unless there's an older guy running it.

This why if you need warranty work done, you play dumb and keep your mouth shut until after you load your stuff on the way home. Make them create an excuse not to honor the warranty. If he had damaged the blades I would have put a new set on and not said a word to the repair shop.

I had a really old honda one time and it was about worn out and had been abused but I hardly paid anything for it. Aluminum deck, self propelled. I kept it going for several years. One day I went to use it and there was a huge puddle of oil underneath. I just gave up and bought a toro super recycler. This was 2005 I think model 20054. I still have it. I've done stuff to it, but the engine still runs well doesn't smoke. I think those SR4s were better than than the latest super recycler. Everything got so much more expensive starting in 2020. Honda mowers, toro mowers, food, gas, everything. I'll keep what I got until I can't make it work anymore.

Yes, the prices went through the roof. Got to keep those mowers running.👍

Thanks for the video the problem should have been fixed under warranty customer should never said anything about hitting anything I don't think hitting something is what caused the oil seal to fall out .BTY The correct cable adjustment is not all the way but a .08 to .120 inch gap now a 1/8 drill bit is .125 inches so it should always be a no go a 5/64ths bit is .078 inches so it should always be a go.

Great Video. I'm amazed how the big repair place just said no. Now I recently became a homeowner and will need to buy a mower to do my lawn. What brand of mower you see the most in your repairs? Better yet, do you have a suggestion on what mower to get for a flat 1/3 acre lawn?

Almost anything. Buy a cheapie and keep oil level at all times. People get rid of ones without self propel for $75 sometimes. I check oil level 2 times. Before starting and during a break. Get sae 30 oil

Nice save! I believe the dark days of small engines are now upon us, but at least you will be getting more business. Edit: I've been thinking about it... Could the assembler of that engine have forgotten to put the thrust washers on the crankshaft? It may have some play up and down if they did (this may have caused a "hammer" effect on the seals) Great vid!

It will be interesting to see how long people can keep gas mowers going once most go to electric. I think a long time. New engines are even still available.

I found a crack in my deck. I had a Honda authorized repair dealer replace the deck. After I took it home, it started leaking out the bottom periodically. After a year, the mower stopped and had to have it repaired. Never leaked when it was getting repaired until I brought it home. :(

Seal instlation defect on honda's part ,, about the only thing I know otherwise that could blow a crank seal out like that would be a totaly blocked crankcase vent causing the crankcase to be seriously over pressurized , I have seen one blown out by a crankcase fuel vapor explosion due to badly fuel contaminated oil..
@SmallEngineDIY2 жыл бұрын
Wow. That would be a lot of pressure. Don't know what caused this one to pop out. I never saw it again so I assume it is working fine.

@SmallEngineDIY3 жыл бұрын
I would check the dip stick level and see how much oil is in the crankcase. Possibly drain it out and refill to the proper level.
@theclasemen12713 жыл бұрын
@@SmallEngineDIY thanks I'll do that, but its weird because when i bought it and first put the oil in it i didn't even used all, it was on the safe level so it wasn't overfilled 🤷♂️
@s.swanky18093 жыл бұрын
@@theclasemen1271 check the head cover for leaks. If not the head cover, it could be from the cam pulley shaft if the o-ring is bad. Since the shaft is exposed right behind the head cover, it can be difficult to tell if the leak is from a bad head cover seal or bad o-ring on the cam pulley shaft. For either leak, you have to remove the head cover. There are vids on how to fix both. Good luck!

There's no way that blade brake adjustment was correct from the store. It didn't work properly before the seal issue IMO.

Exactly, someone tweaked that cable to run the blade full time. It's one less handle to hold. That's why they do it.

That is definitely a warranty problem, if the engine would of been seized, Honda should replace it for free or at least at a huge discount.

It’s good Honda isn’t going to make this stuff anymore because they suck. Oil leaks from bad gaskets, and seals (or no seals), and the dealers don’t want to fix the stuff under warranty. Honda must screw the dealers on warranty repairs.
