The glass doesn't get hot enough to liquify, and even if it did, its density is higher than the liquid metals, so it won't mix. Also, the glass would stick to his tool if it did get to a state of liquid, but it never gets that hot. As for it removing impurities, I doubt it does a whole lot. As you can see, it still had impurities at the end. Also, I'm not saying it doesn't do that, just that it's not as effective as everyone is saying the glass would need to get hot enough to allow impurities to absorb into it and then scooped out and I don't believe it achieved that in this short video also I don't think it floats because it's heavier than the metal when melted or in molten form.

it's possible that the he is using borosilicate glass shards, which is commonly known as pyrex borosilicate glass has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion, meaning it can withstand extreme changes in temperature without cracking or shattering by adding these glass shards to the forge, he could be using them as a visual indicator of the temperature of the metal

Looks cool I worked in a foundry without any fancy equipment for about a year. it was satisfying but hard work. Bronze and brass can be tricky, aluminum is pretty forgiving. The divots in the blade is either contamination or gas that got trapped during the pour. When I encountered these issues I would add vents throughout the mold. That might help.

I have working in a foundry for 9 years, we most cast in bronze sometimes aluminum, and some small works in silver. In the video, I noticed there was no lead core it was solid brass bullets as far as I could tell from the video. If they had lead, they would be jacketed rounds, meaning brass over lead, and the back end of the bullet would show lead as the jacket doesn't cover the lead completely. I hope this helps or explains a little. Also, if it is a mix of brass and lead, the majority of it would be lead like probably 80-85% lead to 20-15% brass, and I am unsure what the material would be considered or what color it would have but it would be heavy and sort of soft from being mostly lead

Was the model sacrificial or had you removed it prior 2 pour?
@DeaBroggn
@DeaBroggn Жыл бұрын
It's a sand cast so i guess it would be hard to remove the model without destroying the cast. The styrofoam model is usually dissolved by the molten metal.

@DeaBroggn wasn't clear model was styrene, so cool lost model method. Removal depends on sand composition, to be fair, I never saw registration pins, so removal not likely. The powder, I presume was meant to facilitate separation & that confused me... Appreciate the details.
@DeaBroggn
@DeaBroggn Жыл бұрын
@@patrickhayes3099 True, the powder would indicate it being separatable later, though he just destroyed the cast at the end.
