ALOCASIA PROPAGATION: Grow alocasia from corms
Alocasia and some similar aroids produce little corms which are like bulbs in some ways. You can take these alocasia corms and grow a new plant and this video shows how I grow alocasia from corms with a little prop station.
What is the difference between a corm and a bulb?
Corms are enlarged underground stems that store all those well needed nutrients and they surrounded by papery outer layers. After stems sprout from the corm, buds form on top of the stem.
Corms at their center are solid tissue, whereas Bulbs are immature layers of leaves
Most Aroids have tubers or rhizomes, this means a damaged plant has the food storage and ability to grow new shoots from many points beneath the ground. Some aroids have other means of vegetatively propagating themselves.

@@bEngelschen with aroids that create forms/offsets I think they do like a cooler dormant period. The reason we have corms is because the plant is storing energy in the stem base (corns and tubers are modified stems whereas bulbs are modified leaves). Tropical aroids don't need to do this as much as temperate ones like Arisaema, Amorphophallus. Sauromatum etc. With think it's about temperature rather than time of year so maybe chill the corms for a while before starting them. Ill try over winter and do a new video.

I have several plants that grew corms on the surface of the soil and I wanted to wait for them to start growing on their own, but it's been quite a number of months and none of them have sprouted. Do you know if you need to separate them from the parent plant to get them to grow, or can I just leave them attached?

I have a gigantea I just split up into 5 plants because it was HUGE. I found 22 corms. I'm excited to give as gifts once they sprout and get large enough.

This video was so helpful; I just reported my Alocasia Polly and found a bunch of corms!! Thank you for this video! I have had little corms (now I have a name for them) growing off of my black velvet and everything I could find was on rhizome propagation. I knew they were not flowers growing off the side, as I have had a flower grow from the middle of this black velvet, so I assumed they were babies. I just didn't know what to do with them. Now I do, so much appreciated!

Thanks for watching! The whole clan! I’ve been very lucky over the years and never had a bad spider mite attacks just yet! I’m always nervous that I will get nailed one day. I’ve had a bad case of mealy bugs but they are easily solved.

Peel your avocado seeds black layer off so your left with the tan off white colour this stops rot put it in a zip lock bag with a shot of water in the bag and put it somewhere dark and you’ll see the seed split in two quickly then once the roots about 1 cm ish put it in a plastic bottle that has been cut in half with the lid section inverted like a funnel put the seed it in the funnel section and fill bottle with water until the tip of the root touches the water through the funnel like bottom half. You’ll see the tap root shoot doon into the water and once it’s mature enough you can transfer it to soil and hey presto your tree will begin 😀 no cocktail sticks and water glasses

I usually keep a layer of sphagnum moss on my plants and noticed that corms tend to form between the soil and moss pretty readily.

Oh that's a great video! Thank you :) I literally don't like my Alocasia Polly because the new leaf will come out and another dies so I always have just 1 leaf. :/ idk what's wrong. Whenever new leaf is out the old is dead within 24h (going yellow, brown)

If you leave the corms in the pot, will they grow to make a bushier plant?

Sometimes it happens, but it is a much slower process, and not all corms will sprout in soil.

I have a question about airflow. Do you usually seal the lid of the spag prop box? Do you let it air out for a few hours each day? I’m currently working with a Jacklyn and reading that without oxygen, I’m inviting rot. Can you please advise, thanks!

Decided to give this a go after having a massive first-timer harvest of 22 regal shield corms. About half or more sprouted, good enough for me. They have plenty of roots, with some are small. Feels like I put in too much perlite. Should I scoop em out, reduce perlite, put them back in, or just toss them in soilÉ

Hey, so I've been using the perlite method in a glass jar with saran wrap covering it but some of my corms have gone moldy. Any suggestions? I've been spraying them with diluted rubbing alcohol when I see the mold😬

Thanks for the great info! Do you only add filtered water to your perlite and moss or do you give water soluble nutrients to your water once they have sprouted?

No just regular tap water or sometimes.rain water if I remember. We are lucky that our water comes from a source in the Welsh mountains and it is a neutral ph and is very high quality. I might do some experiments this year and see if it makes a difference. I do Foliar feed the seedings though with Pro-XL organic feed.

I seem to get a much better hit rate with perlite than with moss for some reason. I do propagate Stapelia in moss and all my prop boxes for cuttings are done with sphagnum.

May I ask a question? I have some Alocasia Jacklyn corms I’m trying to root and I’m 4 weeks in and NOTHING. Would putting them on a heat mat help or am I just being impatient? 😂 I think I need to peel a little more too. Thank u for your video.

Yeah heat will force them for sure but 4 weeks isn’t long. As long as they aren’t rotting ( give them a squeeze) then try and be patient. I know it’s a pain lol more light helps too

You say it's Sphagnum Moss - I've never seen green sphagnum. Are you using a special kind? I have followed these steps and now have a few Zebrinas that will need to move to the moss stage soon 😁

I do a few mixes but my most popular is moss+perlite. As they get bigger I add bark too.

Hello, how can you prevent mold? I also put the corms into vet perlite and mold started to develop on the top of the corms even after I uncovered the container to get some airflow… 🙁 I am using corms from a Polly.

This made me realize my own stupid error, from the last time I attempted corm propagation of my Amazónica-Polly… I thought the root end was the leaf end. And I had it in about 1cm of water to take root. Clearly not gonna happen.😂😭

I call them potato babies. I think they feel sort of like a potato if they have not died.
