“The Alocasia tandurusa was first described by Prameswara & A.Hay and is native to the Bolaang Mongondow Regency in Northern Sulawesi. It’s a testament to the incredible biodiversity found in Indonesia, and particularly the Minahasa peninsula.”
Enjie Jacklin, a local of Gorontalo in Northern Sulawesi, played a significant role in popularizing this species online under the name Alocasia ‘Jacklin’. This did not sit well with a lot of Indonesian growers and collectors and they have since worked on the name Alocasia tandurusa.
This plant is a true gem from the lush forests of Sulawesi, Indonesia, and it’s known for its remarkable foliage that resembles deer antlers.
The plant's appearance is similar to Alocasia nycteris from the Philippines but differs in specific leaf characteristics. The Alocasia tandurusa has several distinctive features that make its leaves truly unique:
- Deeply Lobed Leaves : The leaves are much more deeply lobed compared to other species, with divisions extending more than halfway to the midrib.
- Textured Surface : The adaxial leaf surfaces are often pubescent, giving them a textured feel.
- Narrowly Sagittate Blade : The blade outline is more narrowly sagittate, which means it has a shape resembling an arrowhead.
- Divergent Posterior Costae : The posterior costae (the veins extending from the base of the leaf blade) diverge at an angle of approximately 60º, contributing to the leaf's unique shape.
- Shorter Leaf Sheath : The leaf sheath is proportionately shorter, making up about 17-20% of the petiole length³.
The inflorescence of Alocasia tandurusa, like other species in the Alocasia genus, is characterized by a spadix and a spathe. The spadix is a spike-like structure containing the flowers, while the spathe is a large, often colorful bract that surrounds the spadix. This type of inflorescence is typical of the Araceae family.
