Aloha from Hawaii! - Spearfishing in the crystal-clear waters of the big island!

Finally we have made it to Hawaii, and are having an awesome adventure - we are on the big Island and have rented a camper with a roof top tent, got out to a remote area and have found an awesome place to have a dive!

I just stumbled across your video and I'm kind of impressed at the amount of DAY lobsters you came across.... I live here on the Big Island and I noticed several things.... (Besides the amount of day lobsters that you encountered)... I'm not sure how the Mu are in New Zealand but, here in Hawaii, we usually are more successful catching them by "tucking" behind a ledge or boulder where our body is hidden. We also hide our eye from them and just wait...... aaaaaaaaand wait.....and wait some MORE....all the while being as motionless as possible.... Then, when they're within shot distance, we use the aguado (sp?) move where you pull forward with your hand and not kick.... This technique increases your chances dramatically.... Next, ...... Peacock Grouper AKA, ROI is kind of a gamble when deciding to eat them. They are well known for carrying Ciguatera and depending on where you catch them, we usually use them for Chum...BUT, you are CORRECT...they are an AMAZING fish that has nice, moist flaky meat... I ALSO noticed you used the Oplelu Kala for Chum which blew my MIND because THAT fish is a GREAT candidate for Sashimi 😋😋😋😋 Aaaaaaaaand FINALLY.... That lobster that you caught at the end, is a female, which is illegal in Hawaii... You can tell by the tiny little "pinchers" on the back two legs. That's how they "groom" their eggs. You can ALSO tell by the size of the flaps on the underside of its tail. On the FEMALES, they are much larger and are used to somewhat protect their eggs.... I appreciate you putting the ones with eggs back but, I would encourage you to learn to identify genders and species before even stepping "fin" into the waters... Please don't take this as a "scolding" or anything in that manner. You obviously have a good following and it's important to educate those that may not know.... I would ALSO recommend having a dive partner... ESPECIALLY if you intend on hunting Mu... They ALSO have a nickname which is well deserved because they FORCE you to stay down for a very long time.... Sometimes longer than you anticipated...which is why they are nicknamed the Widowmaker... Stay BLESSED and stay SAFE!!! Aloha 🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾

Aloha! Thank you for your reply! So we don't have Mu in New Zealand so I'm not used to targeting them as my only other experience with them was in Vanuatu. When I looked at what I was doing in the video I did realize that not only did I not hide my body enough I was also looking around way too much so it is not really suspiring that I couldn't get close to them. With the Roi or peacock grouper, Before we ate it I talked to my mate (a marine biologist) on the big island about it and that is the information that he gave me, since we have not really eaten fish that are likely to have cig before he suggested that we would be most likely ok to eat the fillets off it and we were fine. I would not be likely to eat them all the time if I lived there though. The Oplelu Kala I was not sure about because once I got it in my hands it looked a lot like a saw tail that I have shot here in New Zealand and it did not taste good at all, that being said I was intending to take it and try it, and had only ripped the head and guts off it for the berley and had just left the body on the ground intending to pick it up once I 'd seen if the mu would come in onto it - unfortunately the shark beat me to it! I'm kind of gutted to hear that they are great sashimi! And finally onto the lobster - It's no surprise that I saw so many day lobster - I kind of have a sense of where they will be hanging out, they are kind of my specialty, its a bit hard to describe but I usually just get a feeling that they will be in an area. As for the female lobster I had done a decent amount of reading of the regulations and hadn't found that they were on the no take list - however when I read your reply I was horrified with myself for taking one. Then I did a bit more research wondering how I could have missed it and it seems that for a time the taking of female lobster was banned but that law was repealed sometime in 2021 and now provided that they are in the lobster season and are not carrying eggs under their tails then they are ok to take. Now I acknowledge that I may be wrong on this as there does seem to be some variation in the information available and if I am I sincerely apologize to all Hawaiians It was not at all my intention to break the local rules... I did not take your reply as a "scolding" rather as constructive criticism and I thank you for that, I will learn from it! Aloha!!!

@@KerryFlowers also....about the Roi.... It's not "scientific" but more anecdotal.... The Roi and other "predator" fish caught on the west side are "hotter" than other areas. Now, you look at some of the main differences between the WEST side and OTHER'S...the thing that screams out at you, is the amount of golf courses, resorts and runoff from development.... I've been diving here for over 40 years and as a KID, I was told to be careful of the fish from the west side ... Buuuuuut, they say that Ciguatera is a dynaflatulant that attaches itself to the reef.... With THAT understanding, you'd think that UHU or parrotfish would be the number one CARRIER buuuuuut, that's a very sought after fish here and to the best of my knowledge, noone has reported getting sick from eating them 🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️

That fish you said is a trout is called a roi. You can eat it but always be aware it could have ciguatera

Yeah, you could hear them as clear as a bell - the lobster are so weird making that noise - when I grabbed the first one it was a bit of a shock to hear it squeak like that lol. The whale sound was constant on this bit of coast as they were just out off it in good numbers. It was a shame that when I put the drone out there it took so long to find some that by the time I started to get footage the battery was finished and it had to return to land...Cheers!!!

Pretty sure it's a lot of coral bleaching - The only other coral diving I have done was in Vanuatu and it was similar to there...Cheers!!!

Great video. Only one piece of advice. Try not to show the shoreline. Good lobster spots are kind of not advertised too much to keep guys from going there and over fishing. We all have "our spots" that we only share with a few close friends, but since the island is so small, it's very easy for guys to know exactly where you were by seeing the coastline, and may not be as conservative in their grabbing of lobster as you are.

Yeah, I wasn't sure as it looked a lot like a sawtail fish that I shot in New Zealand once and that was not good to eat at all. That being said I was intending to take it back and try it and had only ripped the guts out and head off in the hope that the mu would come in for a look - the shark just beat me to it lol! You are not tripping there were humpback whales everywhere just off the coast - unfortunately I didn't get to see any while I was in the water and when I found them with the drone I was only able to get a few seconds of footage before my battery started going flat and the drone returned to me...Cheers!!!

I did spend a pretty decent amount of time looking at the regulations and as far as I could tell taking of female lobster had been prohibited for a time but that rule had since been repealed and now as long as it is within the lobster season and the female is not carrying eggs then they are fair game. @@KerryFlowers the reason for the repeal of 188-58.5 is because the ruling was moved to chapter 13-95 so the previous ruling is not needed.
