Excellent informational video!!! Only just recently found hour channel and subscribed. Thank you so much. When I buy philodendron plants, the info provided usually doesnt specify whether they are crawlers or climbers. So no wonder the tendency is to try to attach them to moss poles. Take care.

I'm so glad I came across this video on your channel. It is very informative. I was ordering philodendrons without knowing if they were climbers or crawlers and of course the ones I was ordering were all crawlers. Beautiful but I am running out of space for them especially the ones that have gotten big. Thanks again for the insight. I'm a big fan of your channel.😃😃😃😃😃

I'm not sure how many times I've re-watched this video, let's just say many! So much info in such a short time, plus the info that you don't typically find elsewhere, like the different substrate needs for crawlers vs climbers. That is very valuable. So is the info on how to work with those crawling stolons. Thank you! 💓

Last night my bestie sent me a pic of an orchid jumping out of the pot again. I told him to buy some pretty eaves and mount them along the whole inside wall and just let it be free to roam! It would be beautiful to have the hammered copper filled with the trailing plants! Who needs crown molding when you can have 90 feet of plants 😁🤣

I’ve recently rescued a Rojo Congo Philodendron. It is quite young but it t doesn’t look like a crawler or a creeper. I also have a large Split Leaf Philodendron and a smallish Pink Princess. I’d like to know what to expect from these as well. I’m pretty sure the SLP is a creeper. It the others are new to me.
@AlohaPlantLife
@AlohaPlantLife 2 жыл бұрын
Your observation skills are pretty keen! The Rojo Congo is in fact not a climber or a crawler but rather a self-heading aka upright Philodendron. I have a separate video just on self-heading philodendron which I'll try and link at the end of this response (never tried to put a link in a comment though so not sure if it will work or not). In that video I also mention that when it comes to self-heading Philodendron there used to be what were referred to as arborescent self-heading Philodendron but that all of those plants were recently reclassified into the genus Thaumatophyllum. That's what your 'Split-Leaf Philodendron' is. So it will grow similar to self-heading Philodendron except that it will eventually become more tree-like with what looks more like a defined trunk though no where near as long as what you think of when you think about a normal tree trunk if that makes sense. Now, I have not yet done a video on what are known as semi-vining philodendron. Semi-vining philodendron act like they want to climb but they seem to be less inclined to easily attach to things in order to actually climb them, which I think is probably due to the fact that it seems like the majority of semi-vining philodendron on the market today are hybrids that were crossed with some type of self-heading philodendron. So a good example of a semi-vining philodendron would be your Pink Princess and also Philodendron White Knight and Philodendron Painted Lady just to give a few examples. So your pink princess is going to need a little extra help from you in order to get it to attach to and climb whatever support structure you might choose to give it. Hope this helps 💚 kzbin.info/www/bejne/rH3Mp6Ccpa2Gl80

You are the only KZbinr I've come across to finally talk about the P. peltatum! I bought one in 2019. It's gorgeous. Interesting about the "P. aff sodiroi"... It's been so difficult to find information about this plant. Must admit I am thinking about giving mine a pole. I chopped it cause it seems to want to climb and all its new leaves were a third of the size they had been. It was a mess. I'll up-pot it next season, and I'm in a better lit home now, so we'll see...

This is literally worth more than 2k views. It helped me a lot. You've summed up a day of searching in a nicely, organized way. By the way, I am thinking of putting cocochips in the pole instead of moss. What do you think of this? Moss is very expensive, as it is not sold as a product in our country, so it is imported.
@AlohaPlantLife

Climbing Philodendron should readily attach to almost anything so I don't see why coco chips wouldn't work. You could also consider using a coco coir pole.

Sorry for the delay in responding to this! The 2nd two are definitely climbers. The first one, that name gets misused sometimes so I just want to make sure I’ve got the right plant. Does it look the same as philodendron sp Columbia? If so, it’s a crawler.

Yeah it totally seems like it wasn’t labeled correctly. I’m having a hard time telling for sure if it is the same as sp. Columbia, but I think it has to be? It has deep lobes and a very pillowy look. I recently saw someone else post the same plant online, and I can’t remember if she had to labeled as bipennifolium Columbia or species Columbia, but it was def the same plant and she said it was a crawler. So hopefully it’s a crawler! 😂 thank you so much for getting back to me!!! Super helpful!

So helpful, I can't find any other video with this information. Do you have a list of other plants that are crawlers and climbers or a list of only crawlers? I have so many in a younger stage that will need a pole eventually if they are climbers but I do not want to stake them if they are crawlers. Also I"m trying to find out the climbers that I can get away with staking that will attach to something like driftwood because their aerial roots are more conducive for easy attachment or who just need stakes for support, verses really thrive and triple leaf size from moss poles (I prefer driftwood supports so I want to use them where i can but don't want to use them if the roots really won't attach). Thank you for a great video!
@AlohaPlantLife
@AlohaPlantLife 2 жыл бұрын
When I was planning out this video I tried so hard to find a comprehensive scientific source for all known crawling species of Philodendron and I unfortunately couldn't find one. And there are just so many hybrids when it comes the climbers that the list would be a mile long. However, there are a few ways you can tell if it's a climber or a crawler as it matures. For starters, a stolon is very different looking than what you see on a climber. However if the stolon isn’t fully visible, another thing you can look for is if there are aerial roots or the start of aerial roots. Only climbers get aerial roots. Crawlers only get soil roots. In regards to your question about type of 'pole' to give the climbers, if they're true climbers they will readily attach to anything (I mean they attach to tree bark in the wild so no reason they wouldn't attach to drift wood in your home). However, while I have also done a video on self-heading aka upright philodendron, I have not yet done a video on what are known as semi-vining philodendron. Semi-vining philodendron seem to be less inclined to readily attach which I think is probably due to the fact that it seems like the majority of semi-vining philodendron on the market today are hybrids that were crossed with some type of self-heading philodendron. So a good example of a semi-vining philodendron would be a Pink Princess or White Knight or Painted Lady. Those are going to need extra help to attach to pretty much anything. Hope this helps 💚

@@stevewilke3752 if you want to cut away the long runners you can but you won’t like immediately get larger leaves if that makes sense. It won’t hurt the plant to do that though.

Hi! I've just discovered your channel and I love it. I have a question about Philodendron Giganteum. Is it a climber or a crawler? Google doesn't seem sure and I've seen tons of photos where they're very clumped together looking almost self heading. That being said I was given a small Giganteum plant and it's climbing up a pole. I'm just very confused now lol

@AlohaPlantLife
@AlohaPlantLife 2 жыл бұрын
Actually it’s neither. It’s one of the self-heading Philodendron that has been reclassified into the genus Thaumatophyllum (it’s scientific name is Thaumatophyllum spruceanum). It’s what’s defined as an arborescent self-heading plant, which means it grows in a tree-like fashion. I have a video on self-heading Philodendron if you haven’t checked it out yet: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rH3Mp6Ccpa2Gl80

I just want the giganteum and I'll use the leaves as blankets! Did your monstera unfurl weird or is the angle playing tricks on me? (I do have a migraine starting so who knows) that front leaf looks all toothy and I'm kinda here for it! My baby is starting to unfurl. I don't expect any fenestrations yet. I think I'm going to add the baby with only 3 leaves (so tiny!) Into the pot and save a bit of space. Only issue is neither plant seems to have a front yet so I'm not quite sure on positions 🤔 How many deliciosa are in your pot? Love your hair in this video! It looks really cute up!
@AlohaPlantLife
@AlohaPlantLife 2 жыл бұрын
It’s just the angle and the fact that that leaf is flipping up slightly at the tip for whatever reason. There are actually 9 vines in that pot! And thanks regarding the hair! So much quicker than having to straighten all of it lol (my hair is actually naturally curly 🙃)

Dear Drea, I saw on your web/shop Philodendron Summer Glory for sale. Is it a climber or a crawler? According to your theory, it will be a climber, if the McColley's parent is a climber. To me it is more like "standing straight" one. Recently I heard from two people, located in Great Britain, that they SUSPECT their plants to be a crawler based on the plants behavior. I will be very happy to find YOUR opinion on this plant. Have a nice day.

So much info in a short 20 minutes video, so thank you a lot for this one. Especially glad you mentioned the different soil needs for crawlers vs climbers, you don't hear this often.

I was gifted a Philodendron Melinonii Golden. It is growing pretty quickly and I have been trying to figure out if I need to get this thing on a moss pole, or if it’s a crawler. My Google searches have said they are both epiphytic and terrestrial and that it grows on limbs of trees in the canopy of the rainforest. What would you recommend? Let it crawl or give it a pole? Thank you.
