I’m glad to hear you also water your plants about once a week. I hear so many people saying they water them 2/3 times a week but even though I have a very chunky soilmix, I can’t water more often than once a week because the soil stays moist

Philodendron plowmanii is a great example on how a plant adapts according to its environment. Based on my experience, P. plowmanii would produce leaves with more silver streaks if placed on a brighter light and vice versa.

looking at the growth pattern of the Silver Cloud I bought a couple of weeks ago (12 bucks at the local nursery!!), I would agree with what you're saying in the video. Mine's definitely more of a climber than a crawler. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that there's e.g. a Sodiroi in the mix here, that would explain its more heart-shaped leaves and also why it sometimes can be a crawler like the Mamei but other times more of a climber

5:12 i did similar experiment but with anthurium radicans (the pure species one, not the radicans x luxurians which sometimes sold as radicans). I made little "pole" from half of plastic cup and put wire over the cut side, then fill it with aroid mix. So far, so good... It definitely rooted to the "pole" and starting to climb. The reason i did it : since anthurium radicans is a crawler and have relatively small leaf and short petiole... the optimal viewing is from the top and i put all of my anthuriums on a shelf atm. Some people actually let them trail down from the pot, which is nice too. But the hanging part of the plant won't likely to put out any roots and i feel like it's a waste of nodes 😂

WRT ground crawlers being climbers of a sort... yes they often do in the wild. They're not going to skate 15metres up a bole to the canopy - like those zippy true climbers. But they can handle themselves on corky low buttressed etc.
@hollybeck605

I dont know why it never occurred to me to cut my Gloriosum like that and leave it in the pot. I've cut "top cuts" many times to sell to make more room but never did mid cuts. Great idea! Mine is so big at this point it's outgrown the usual long/skinny pots like you use and I've got it in a gigantic square pot. But it's not very filled out. That would be a great way to fill out the width of the pot. Crawlers are the only tropical I grow that make me wish I lived further south in Florida so I could put them outside in the ground. They are so amazing but take up so much space.

Might be that the mineral substrate is best for the Mamei due to the spidermites: so regular showers are possible without having wet soil.

Good video, what a great idea with the rectangle self watering….here is my question, I’ve never known for my plants to have spider mites. But at times I’ve had pests eat part or leaves or sucked the life out of a leaf. I am not familiar with spider mites, do you think it’s possible to get them on video so we can see what they look like? And what do they do to the plants ? Thank you in advance
@sydneyplantguy
@sydneyplantguy Жыл бұрын
Thanks :) They are very small so you probably won’t really see them but you can usually tell by small ‘spiderwebs’ forming on your plant edges or yellowing edges of leaves with lots of tiny dots. They essentially suck the life out of the plant :P i’m sure you can find some close ups of them on google :)

How do you manage them when they crawl towards end of the pot ? Sure, its easier to grow climbing plant, we have 2.5m ceilings but not 2.5m wide pots. Do you just cut it and let it be ? What will happen then ? They will be like that for years or they will push new leaves from existing node ? Im basically interested how long crawlers can live in pot before totally limiting them to grow more. ♥

Mm very hard to say why but usually if the plant drops leaves it means it doesn’t have a large enough root system to sustain the leaves. Is there any reason it’s just growing in moss ? Maybe consider potting it up :)

One of my McDowell leaves is looking very sad. It is the latest leaf to come in. It almost looks like it is wilting? The other leaves are fine with a new one coming in. I have no idea why this is happening. Any ideas?

Have you ever considered predator bug packs for your spider mite problem? Most of the bugs only have a short life cycle and chow down on spider mites and you can just hang a little pack of them on the plant and let them do all the work.
