This was beautiful! And much more than I saw in 1984! My moms family is from Oahu and Maui and since I grew up mainland we would spend some summers visiting grandparents and aunties and uncles. In 84 we visited my great aunt and uncle in maui and they were the best! I loved them immediately the first time I met them. However, lol Uncle had let me stuff myself that morning with several types of cereal and off the 4 of us to Hana. My mom and I in the back of a tiny old Datsun car. Needless to say I was sick the entire trip from motion sickness. I’m grateful had a stomach full of something! I had a big trashcan liner and no dramamine. I’ve never been so sick in my life. They never stopped, I guess thinking the faster we got there the better. I only remember seeing and walking on a black sand beach for a little while and I guess I had ruined the trip as we soon got back in the car and went home. Me dry heaving the entire way back. So please pack motion sickness medicine! I felt so guilty.

One of the spots that I always remember is coming around a curve and directly ahead is the enormous Bamboo Forest! One of the most beautiful memories of my trip there. Printed indelibly on my brain. Thinking of it makes me know I will come back again.

We did this road to Hana trip today, once we arrived Hana, we ate lunch and continue driving around to the other side instead of turning around back to the same route, there was a part of the road that is a dry river bed for about 10 seconds on a 25 mph speed, then back to a black top road, we also saw a couple of cows right along the highway that seemed got away from the range fence...I can finally say that we made around Mt. Haleakala.

I love Maui, it's my second favorite destination in the world (Moorea, Tahiti - French Polynesia is #1. The one drive I will never take again is the Road to Hana. Way too scary even though it's beautiful. I've traveled in every state, never was as frightened as on the Hana Road. My advice to Visitors, stay in the Lahaina / Kaanapali Beach area. Best beach on the island!

Nice tips, and drone video. I'm looking for mileage markers and descriptions for the things to stop and see. A rating from 1-10 of each attraction would be nice also to help prioritize the time for the day. Does anyone have something like that? Am I asking too much?

One tip to add. Fill up your gas tank in Kahului. Paia is the last of gas stations. And it is an all day adventure! If you leave early AM you will not be back until after 5 pm. This video also doesn't show the VAST amount of cars on the Road to Hana! Bumper to bumper all the way. I have also seen some videos that say to take the backside to Hana! NO! The road is really bad and Rental Car Companies do not ALLOW travel on this road! There are also several areas that you must honk to let oncoming traffic know you are coming around the corner. If you don't you will have to back your car down a windy road on a cliff with no railings! Super scary!! And don't forget to see the 7 SACRED POOLS! The hike is incredible! But not for the weak!! The trail can get really slippery too. It takes you through this incredible bamboo forest! And you will never forget the lone banyan tree along the way! It is a clipping from the Banyan tree in Lahaina. And can't emphasis enough. Bring CASH. The best food is from the street vendors. And you will regret not buying chocolate chip banana bread! Totally will regret it!!

I've taken this drive. It has many lovely spots. If you are used to driving the road is not a challenge nor is car sickness a concern. There was nothing when you arrived in Hana but to turn around and drive back. I loved the one lane bridges an sharp corners. The red bark tree grove was especially beautiful. The video doesn't show any of the great stuff. I wonder why?
