Dave was the guy a was rooting for in this season of Alone. He already proved he's not a random quitter and that he has pretty decent skills at surviving. He was very honest as to why he tapped out from Redemption and I respect that because I hate those contestants who give lame excuses for quitting, instead of just being honest with the viewers. However, I do have to wonder why so many of these contestants that struggle with finding food, always seem to put all their eggs in one basket, like Dave here. If fishing is not paying off, you hunt... if hunting is not paying off, you trap... if trapping is not paying off, you catch worms and insects, if catching critters is not paying off, you forage... then if none of them pay off, you starve but you at least tried everything. Dave here put all his final efforts into the one single strategy of hunting large game, specifically deer, with a bow and arrow. Why pick the most unlikely to succeed and difficult strategy as your last ditch effort for survival without having even truly diversified your strategies? There are so many types of traps he could have set, which are an effective yet passive way of acquiring food, ranging from large game, medium game, small game, birds and fish... but Dave never really did anything to pursue that strategy. He didn't set up traps or snares, he didn't set up static fishing lines, nets or fish traps. He seems to have disposed of a lot of scraps he could have used as bait for trapping. Is it that contestants are complacent because they know they are really not alone? Because they are not really facing life or death survival? Or is it something else? Either way, no one really seems to dedicate all the effort truly necessary to feed themselves and survive in the wild on this show, but they do seem to have time to make musical instruments, chairs, wind chimes, saunas, interior decorations, swings, wood figurines and to take needless trips up cliffs and mountains in the name of spirituality and saving the world. These are not true survival experts! Survival is serious business and trying to make it fun is a good thing for morale, but only if you have your priorities in order and you are taking care of those first, otherwise where will your temporary morale be when you are thirsty, starving, injured, freezing or worst? A true survival expert knows these things and will use his love for his family as a source of strength to take survival seriously and actually survive, not as a reason to quit!

Well said, I believe you are a hundred percent correct. Maybe because I'm older and was trained by ww2,korea and Vietnam veterans. Those old guys had a seriously different mentality towards everything from what I see nowadays.

@@richardhenry1969Nam was a great teacher. Yip, these are TV shows and they know they're not really in the bad bush. Quilting coz you couldn't bag a deer is a luxury you simply don't have in a real survival scenario.

Sad, he went so far in Patagonia, shame he had to go so soon this time, but I can imagine the PTSD of the starvation he went through

I enjoyed watching Dave. He seems like a kind and humble guy. I liked the way he shared about how it hurt him to kill animals. I'd feel the same way.

Dave's story is truly inspiring such a kind soul worrying about hurting the animals.

So worried about the animals he joined a survival reality show for money where he knew he would have to needlessly kill animals to eat... I say "needlessly" because he wasn't forced to go on this show but he willingly did so, and he did it, not once, not twice, but three times. Yeah, a truly inspiring kind soul... c'mon lady! Let's take a close look at the reality of it.

His shelter was cold, without a warm place you body needs more food. Anyway he found himself in a situation without good options, he did well, no point being there.

Cold burns calories faster. It is not that simple as you say, most participants lost because they got depressed. They did waste time the first weeks.

I am hoping between Sam and Brett I enjoyed watching Sam the first season. He was so close.

The first season I did rooted for Sam but not this season, he hardly did anything but hunker down with his ‘ration’. When you think about it Alan was a big lad too.

cicakkibin I did not like the editing this season. I mean I expected more footage of other activities. I can hear the editing guys. Print the whining, starving and animal noises, dump the rest. We have 30 minute segments and 30 minute commercial allocation. Get it done. Drama! We want Drama dangit!
@H_A_L_76 жыл бұрын
True, they started playing around with the editing format after the first successful season. Now they repeat what was shown before commercial (I watch without commercial, so it’s very irritating indeed), and the footage was kind of pathetic really. I would say unluckily (luck do play a small part), the true survivalist was taken out by her own ‘excitement’ and carelessness, if not I suspect she would have won. There was hardly any footage of Sam partly, maybe he does not venture out too much. Saving calories. Randy is the other one, that I thought could have gone far. Larry at times, I felt was acting for the camera, Sam tried. A few others should not have even been in this season. oh well, see how it goes, for me this season have some great camera work on the scenery (my question would be by whom? participants or professional camera men/women).

I knew this guy wasn't gonna make it because he is practically a homeless guy. These ppl don't eat much... No real hunting/survival skills. He only has homeless skills. His #1 game plan is to outstarve everyone. Too bad that's now how it works on the show. What a waste of a contestant.

Thought this was a show where people show how they survive off the land in real life. Not a philosophical show about how to be a successful quitter with great excuses.
