We have a restaurant near me that is kpen xmas eve and xmas day ,reservations required . The restaurant has a large table they have reserved for single , widows that are alone during Christmas. What a great idea , they can meet new people while having Christmas dinner and they are not having to sit alone. I think more restaurants should do that .

I’ve been alone most holidays bc of family issues. This year I was hoping that it would be different, but alas no. I miss my 12 year old granddaughter. I will be 70 in February and my BFF moved far away four years ago. I’m disabled and can’t drive. All I want for Christmas is a hug! My cat, Thor and I will watch movies.

Thank you , Margaret, for your supportive message to us ageing empty nesters. I am alone this Christmas , for the very first time in my life. I am widowed and my children now have their own lives/families. My siblings have all lost touch since my dear parents have passed. Now they all concentrate their own immediate family , kids/gran children.i can’t deny that ageing is hard ! It isn’t a cool thing to say, but it is the truth. Strangely and unfortunately, for me, I was always okay with being alone as I always loved to curl up with a good book. So I was never lonely. I never knew the feeling of crushing loneliness, until now! In my sixties and wishing that I had put more effort into building lasting friendships😢. God bless you and everyone who is spending the Christmas season alone. We must support each other and share the wisdom gained through the tough and lonely times.

I spent Thanksgiving with my children and grandkids who live a few hours drive away. I made it clear that I intended to be home alone for Christmas out here in the WV mountains. We'll video chat Christmas Day and I'll share their festivities remotely. But it's just too much of a hassle with holiday traffic and severe winter weather for me to travel! I spend the Christmas season emailing, texting, phoning and sending cards to friends and extended family to catch up. Some of them are retired and living alone like me. I do yoga and stretching, fun little projects around the house and decluttering. I'm alone, but I don't feel lonely. Just snuggled in my sanctuary with my two cats, Christmas music and a pot of hot tea or cocoa each evening. No elaborate meals to cook, no boozing it up, no last minute presents to buy. Life is good! 😻👍🎄

My 77 year old mother lives alone in a senior apartment complex (3000 miles away from me) - but she coordinates a potluck gathering in the community room for all the other seniors who also live alone. She is never lonely. She can choose to have private time in her apartment, but the minute she steps out her door she can sit in the public areas (a lovely lobby with couches) and have a chat with anyone who is also there.

Celebrate the reason for the season, even if it is something small that makes you smile. I live in Africa and I drive around on Christmas Eve, with a card that says, with much love, Liz and Claire (my daughter who died of cancer at 18). I add a bit of cash in an envelope and I look for someone who tried to make a difference. Last year, I found a newspaper seller in a very poor area. He had wrapped himself in red crepe paper, with a matching hat, edged with cotton wool. He made me smile and I passed the card through the car window. On my way home, he jumped in front of my car. With tears streaming down his face, he said, you have no idea what a difference this will make to my family. I blew him a kiss and drove off ❤

Such a nice video. I live alone as a 70 yr old divorced woman. No kids. My Christmas celebration will be stress-free. Going to the theater to see the new Bob Dylan movie, then out for a walk, and home for take-out Chinese food and pie. I have great memories of getting together with my family in the past, but they're all gone now. So to me Dec. 25th is just another day I get to be alive and grateful for what's going right in my life.

I will go the spa, unwrapped my own presents I stared buying a present or two for me. Once I got divorced, love the idea so much still doing to date. I will go to church on Christmas day and just be thankful for everything I have. Over the holidays I will get together with friends' life is good

My first couple of holidays alone were a disaster with no special meals or activities planned. My state of mind was terrible. Those times were a "never again" experience. Nowadays I really enjoy myself and find plenty to be grateful for. This year I'm going to eat scallops and rice, veg, and chocolate pie, and I'm going to watch the Call the Midwife special. A new tradition is having a cocktail with a long-distance friend on Boxing Day.

Four grandsons a who do not connect either even though I do my best to take them out for lunch for their birthdays. I do many of the things you suggest every year but it never seems to get easier. This year is no different. They do not answer my calls. If there is a family meal planned I don’t know of it. The not knowing means I can’t plan anything else because I always want to be free just in case.
@doloresaquines15292 күн бұрын
Paulette. You cannot remain in suspense like this. Waiting and hoping and wanting to be free just in case. Could I urge you to ask your sons, straight out, why they do not wish to speak to you. There has to be a reason, perceived or otherwise.
@PauletteMillis2 күн бұрын
Yes that is the hard part. Not knowing so I can’t protect myself and find other things to do. It is a pattern. I’ve tried to get contact through text, phone and phone messages all month. They just prefer to not have me in their circle. One is very clear: he doesn’t t need me. The other is angry with me at this time presumably because he “doesn’t like my decisions” about how I live which of course is none of his business. I’m a real health addict due to past illnesses. I do not force it on anyone. Eg very sensitive to EMF’s which they tell me is stupid.

Christmas is very much 'just another day' to me. I've always hated holidays like this as they bore me. I heard once Valentine's Day was a bad day for many and for a higher unalive rate. I can't relate. I had a good friend who is now late, and she and I would love to spend Christmas alone. I'd do things I wanted to, and I loved it. Most Xmases, I am forced to cook, look happy, gift people, have people around I don't like and make a massive effort for nothing much in return. I've been forced to spend the day with my adult son's extended family (at the time), and I didn't want to be there. Forced into Xmas parties for work, ugh, no.... meaningless. Enjoy the peace and quiet; it becomes the best day of the year. No one bugs you!! A lot of people milk it and spend the day on the pity pot. Get off the pity pot and volunteer if you find it so hard.

Thank you, Margaret...SO relevant!! It's hard being a single, mature woman of a certain age. I start to loosely plan my goals for the next year. I'm definitely going to treat myself! Rosemarie 🩷
