If I remember right - he's the only one who chose a shovel and a multitool, and he's also the only one who didn't choose food rations. He caught the most fish, used the shovel a ton, and kept busy and sane carving dozens of spoons etc. with the multitool. Seems like the unconventional choices paid off

I'd love to see Fowler walk through his 10 items and critique his choices and their performance. How well did his strategy of bringing a Cold Steel shovel and a multi-tool work and a slingshot, for example? Very unorthodox. What was he able to accomplish with each? It appears that he was able to use the extra slingshot bands as the engine for the propeller on his homemade little fishing boats, for example. Did they catch fish in places he could not reach otherwise? What tasks was he limited in doing given what he lacked? Which items, if he could do it over again, would he change, if any? I found Alan's critique of his items for Season 1 to be very informative--wishing he' selected a warmer sleeping bag, for example. It would also be great for Fowler to not only list and critique his items, but the woodcrafting skills that served him in good stead. Could he rank them in terms of their utility for us to learn from? Great start on the channel, Fowler!

Agree. You would think they'd be building box traps for boars. I wonder how far they are allowed to move camp - lots of sunshine on other side of that lake he is on. (as of Ep. 3)
@TheWoodedBeardsman8 жыл бұрын
I think it would be calorie prohibitive IMO. Moving all his stuff and camera gear could be a full 2 day project. Moving 1 day and set up another. I personally wouldn't do it just for the sunshine. It sucks, but the sun hasn't been out around here for a month already :) You deal with that....when I camp though, I always pick the sun side unless it's middle of the summer. It means you don't need to burn calories on making fires all the time. He could also work on clearing a few trees down by the beech, but it's hard to get a sense of that working or not. Box trap would be a great idea. With his shovel, he could also dig a pit trap and bait it with some rotting fish overhead. But digging a hole is friggen hard work man.

Jess B Yeah nice shot for sure. If it's all trout, then he can just gut them though and not fillet, but I get your point. A fixed blade knife is all you really need out there. Not sure why anyone would bother with a multi-tool, maybe one day we'll find out.
@graham7657 жыл бұрын
John Davis That specific multitool (Victorinox Spirit) comes standard with a chisel already, so no need to modify a driver. It is the most compact and useful multitool for day to day use in my opinion. To me, it us not awkward or unbalanced at all, as some comments have suggested. It is one of the more comfortable multis to use (I collect them) For survival use, I would say that there are better choices, but this is a great option and he could do far worse as far as choosing a multitool goes. One thing I do question is both an axe and a saw. Why not trade one for a good sized, nice fixed blade knife?
@donrussell88897 жыл бұрын
you can swap out the multitool blades for blades you do need, you know. sheesh. The crunch's visegrip is far more useful than any belt knife will ever be. Swap out the stainless serrated blade for a pointed, carbon steel blade. get rid of the 3 screwdriver blades and the bit driver, in favor of a hook/scoop knife, an awl, and another file blade, the screwdriver blade atop which you sharpen into being a chisel.

most bears are either juveniles or sows, and some are both. This idea that every black bear weighs 500+ lbs ( and is so dangerous) is a cos. Ditto the idea that you'd hunreds of lbs of salt in order to preserve it. All you need is a salty brine in which to dip the 'kibab" sticks, on which you've skewered the small chunks of meat, so that you can suspend them in the smoke of a fire. The big issue, on Vancouver, will be finding non-coniferous wood with which to smoke-cure the meat or fish.

does anyone ever bother to look at the published list of gear? The first 2 seasons, they had the option of a 2-gallon metal bear canister, and nobody took it! The producers effed them out of the 20x20 tarp after the first 2 seasons. For season four, the gillnet size was cut in half and the mesh size, already a poor choice at 2", was reduced to a nearly worthless 1.5" mesh.

@donrussell88897 жыл бұрын
it's the belt knife that's not needed. and the small tools (modified to be blades) in his SAK that are needed. He should have blown off the ferrorod, big saw and axe in favor of a paracord 2 person hammock, a paracord gillnet, and taken a Crunch Multitool, with a Silky saw blade to be held in the visegrip of the Crunch. Then he'd have been able to catch literally 100's of lbs of fish. Unravel the nets, remove the outer sheating, and access the 9 innder strands of the 750 paracord. That will make 2500 sq ft of 3" mesh. It's quite easy to make 200 ft of such gill net per day, on top of the other chores, and hang it. So you'll be catching more fish every day. and eventually be able to seal off an entire inlet.
@rowanfernsler97255 жыл бұрын
Don Russell get on Alone, bring all those things that you say you need and do it. I’m willing to bet that you wont
@donrussell88897 жыл бұрын
The paracord hammock and paracord gillnet will let you weave 3-4k sq ft of 4" netting (depending upon the size of the gillnet allowed) That's enough netting to feed you quite well, as in averaging 20 lbs of fish per day. Eat half of it, and preserve the other half, cause when winter hits, you'll be done foraging (on Vancouver Island) You'll probably only get 6 weeks before winter hits and the first week, you wont have made much netting. You'll need another week to get it all woven. When your gillnet and weir are producing that well, you'll have the time and fishheads/guts to bait in a bear.
@donrussell88897 жыл бұрын
he had a 12x12 tarp and they gave everyone a 10x10 tarp, so one of the above 10 items, he didn't get to take. If you take the paracord hammock, you dont need the hank of paracord. If you've got a small saw blade to be held in the multitool, you dont need the big saw.

Take the shovel, modified to have a 6" saw edge, a Crunch multitool, with an 8" hooyman saw blade to be held in the visegrip of the Crunch, a 2 man hammock, a gillnet, both made out of 9-strand paracord. Start your first fire with the batteries that they give you, or fire-roll a chunk of your t-shirt. Take a slingbow, with 4 of the 6 arrows featuring 4-tined fishing heads, which can be converted into 8 fishhooks per arrow. Take a 5 qt skillet instead of the 2 qt pot. Take one ration of mixed gorp and pemmican, so you can use some of it as bait and have the energy needed to make the pontoon raft, locate your camp in the optimal spot along the shoreline, and weave some netting out of the inner strands of the paracord. Take the big roll of duct tape, cause it's so useful for making pontoons, dry bags, water containers, and repairs.

by taking the slingbow and 4 fishing arrows, you get a more effective weapon than the slingshot, and you get to skip taking the hooks, cause you can make 2 hooks out of the 4 wire tines on each arrowhead. By taking the visegrip multitool and small saw blade, you can skip taking the big saw (along with keeping the shelter portable, so that you can move it to where the squaw wood is., and knowing to use a Dakota pit and heat big flat rocks to put under your raised bed, you need only 1/4 as much firewood. By making the pontoon raft, you need not care if the local wood will float or not. Also you make it easy to tend your nets and crabtraps, as well as to move 5 miles up and down the shoreline, assuring that you're set up at the optimal spot. It took season 4 guys 6 days just to get 10 miles to the coast of vancouver Island. That's how bad the terrain can be to walk, guys. You can paddle a small raft 5 miles in 3 hours, looking for a decent beach, instead of having to deal with cliffs, or big trees clean to the shore! :-) When you have the E tool and a saw, you dont need the axe.
