@tashadeleon87216 жыл бұрын
the snare wire is far too thin and flexible to make a hook that's worth a hoot, especially when you have no barb to keep the fish on the hook.
@jlogan22286 жыл бұрын
tasha deleon you can always double twist and roll it over and make impromptu Barb's, or fashion them from thorns bones etc. Point being he's got all he needs to do fishing or even making a Gill net
@tashadeleon87216 жыл бұрын
. The fishhooks should be made out of the 4 tines of 5 of the 6 fishing arroweads, with the remaining 3 arrows featuring broadheads. They are already barbed at both ends. So all you have to do is cut them in half and create the eye of the hook. The wire is best used by braiding 4 strands of it and using it to snare deer, goats,sheep or hogs, by neck loops as well as foot loops, to a drag log. The fishhooks taken should be 8 BIG treblehooks, to be used to catch big cats and canines. The gillnet should be made out of 1/8" wide strips cut/torn from the 20x20 tarp. It will make 4000 sq ft of 4" mesh netting. fold and tie it, and it's 2" mesh. If that works better for you, than the 4", due to small size of fish, and if you have enough water to need more netting, you can always interweave local vegetative matter into the 4" mesh, converting it to 2" mesh.
@tashadeleon87216 жыл бұрын
for a trotline to be worth a hook, you have to have "spring-engines" to set the hook, and the bait is still constantly being dissolved or nibbled by tiny fish. You can create wooden versions of the military "speedhook", but the time is far better spent on making netting first.

the 20x20 tarp is not needed. The 10x10 tarp is plenty. If you cut/tear the 20x20 into 1/8" wide strips, it can be made into 4000 sq ft of 4" mesh, or 2000 sq ft of 2" mesh. or you can interweave local vegetation into the 4" mesh and have 4000 sq ft of 2" mesh. That's quite adequate for the river in Mongolia, since it's shallow and not very wide. Put a seine across the river at a sandbar. About 100m upstream, use driven stakes to help you move another seine down to the first one and pen up every fish in that segment of the river. Make a holding net to keep them alive in a deep pool, until you are ready to eat/preserve them. Convert the seines into baited weirs, so that they are catching fish as you process the seine catch. Repeat, until you've fed yourself well for 2 months, while everyone else has just starved. Have 200 lbs of smoked/salted/dried fish when you enter your dugout for the winter, while nobody else has any preserved food, and you'll be declared the winner. How could you lose? Obviously, everyone else is going to starve out long before you will.

I'm a bit confused about these choices: a big felling axe is included, and a folding bucksaw. Why? They are mutually exclusive, so why have both? Instead of the axe, bucksaw and multitool I'd have chosen a Silky Bigboy saw, a large Bowie style knife (like a Cold Steel Trail Master), and a smaller knife (like a Victorinox Ranger Grip 79). However, in this case, where Sam seems to indicate that he will be relying almost totally on trapping for food, maybe the multitool with a pliers may actually be more useful. Note: instead of using an axe for splitting wood for fire-making one could use wood wedges for larger logs or the Trail Master for smaller logs cut with the Silky. The wedges would be cut with the saw and Trail Master, and a wooden mallet used for driving them into logs to split them. In the type of terrain depicted, most firewood would be collected from fallen branches and trees without the need for splitting too much. Why split large logs when you could use smaller logs? I worry that he will be at the mercy of a single source of food once his take-along stock has been used up. However, it is not clear what potnential for fishing exists, as he does not give this much attention.

@wilsonline906 жыл бұрын
Cool guy. I would get other items, but i think he is there to get it. His bag of fat - LOL - and his sleeping bag may be the game changer for him! If you see the others seasons, you will see that most people couldn`t get wild food anyway. The multitool I believe was a great choice. A fixed blade is nice, but a leaderman has that fixture and more a lot more. I would just get some fishing tackle because my hobby number one is fishing. Good luck, dude.
@tashadeleon87216 жыл бұрын
the saw and axe are better replaced by a Cold steel shovel, modified to have 8" of saw edge. The ferrorod is a wasted pick. You can easily bed your coals and maintain a fire. You can easily fire roll a chunk of T shirt for your first fire, if you know to use iodine to heavily rust the outside of your shovel, before you go. Once you have one fire, you can easily have saw/marked wood that you've charred, ashes, dry grass, pine resin, dry bark, dry feathersticks, all kept dry in a bag that you've made in 2 minutes, using the duct tape and your gaiters.

Use the camera case and backpack, stuffed with dry grass, to mostly close off the door, along with stuffing the crevices with loose dirt and grass. have sharpened wooden stakes protruding any place you feel might give entrance to a bear or wolf. You'll be holing up for a week at a time, while the fools are starving out due to their having to get firewood. You wont need a fire in your grass stuffed dugout. Once a week, you'll have to emerge, dispose of wastes, and melt ice for your next stint inside of the dugout. Store the water in your rainsuit. big mistake to not take the 3 lb block of salt, one of Chief Aj's slingbows, the fishing kit, and the hammock. You need to cut up the hammock, so that you can make a set of chaps, a poncho, the water filter, a container, and the paracord clews and tree straps can make all sorts of goodies for you. The fishhooks should be BIG treblehooks, that you can set for cats and canines, baited with salted fishheads. Convert the entire 20x20 tarp into 1/8" wide cordage and use it to make 4000 sq ft of 4" mesh netting. He might still win, tho, cause his competition is just as ignorant as he is, and he's got a 30 lb advantage.

there's lots of sod and anyone can dig a 4 ft wide, 2 ft deep, 8 ft long trench, pill up a foot high sod wall. They have some timber around the river that they are on. So you can have forked timbers at either end of the trench, 2 ft high, holding a ridgepole. Put perlin timbers on the ridgepole, cover them with sod, then a foot thick layer of compressed dry grass, then loose dirt to hold down the grass, and then a tarp over it all. Shallow, narrow trench around the tarp, to handle snow melt. Dont create this until the first hard frost, altho you can shock up the grass, near to hand, have the timbers, stacked have the sod source noted, even the sides of the 1.5 ft squares of sod cut, so all you have to do is slit under them and pry them up. You might, as frost draws near, even have the trench a foot deep. If it rains, you can bail it out and dry out the trench with a fire.and hot stones.

dont need one in the first place. Bank your coals and you'll only need to start ONE fire "from scratch" and you can do that easily by fire rolling a chunk of your t-shirt, given rust as an accellerant. Iodine will easily rust the outside of your shovel. His glasses will start a fire, too.

he's fos about the ferrorod. If you had a choice, you'd of course take a lighter! But you only get 10 picks, and the ferrorod can be done without, letting you take something thats of more value.

This guy cant fish or hunt. He has only trap wire to get food or just by gathering plants. Really? Your rations destroyed you! 2 bags counted for 2 different items. That was really bad. As I see he picked only stainless steel wire and that was really nice move in my opinion, because its multifunctional. Good for snaring but also good for building projects. Good job on that one!

you're not hiking. So you can bank your fire's coals and it will "keep" for 10 hours or more. If you know to put a tarp over your fire, and keep the fire small, you wont need to start another fire from scratch until you've been holed up in your dugout for a week, and then only one per week after that, for a maximum of one month, IF 2 of you even make it to winter time in Mongolia, which is highly doubtful. These people are all just starving, cause they dont know what to take or do. The only guy who managed to feed himself (and then only after a month of a starving) is the only guy who had sense enough to MAKE a net. Netfishing is key to winning this challenge, people. Anyone who doens't make a lot of netting and use it properly, is a fool.

@@jeremyhenning6831 no one believes you fatty. I'm not your buddy, fatty. Here is an idea, try starving yourself for three days. This idea you have of an iron will will go away. no way 2 of these wimps are going to make it to "extreme temperatures". :-) Theyll probably starve out before the first hard freeze! and will for sure do so within a month of the first hard frost. People are totally ignorant about how MUCH meat and fish you have to eat in order to not lose weight under stressful conditions like these, It's about 6 lbs per day for a small woman and 8 lbs for a big man. Only about half of a fish or animal's live weight is edible flesh. So you need to be catching 11-18 lbs of fish/game per day, every day and that's not providing any stored up fat or preserved food for the winter. So you really need to be catching at least twice that much, and nobody's doing more than 10% that well.

I can't imagine it being very useful in an animal attack. You need a lot of room to swing an axe, and I don't believe a big cat or bear is going to let you have that much room. A knife would be MUCH better in an emergency situation, especially if you're asleep when it happens. Plus, I'm pretty sure he's not Kratos. :)

After watching 5 seasons of alive it is plain to see the they need to stop letting people with families be on the show. I am so sick of seeing capable people that can't be away from their families and tap out. This is a symptom of americans being soft and not knowing how to be with themselves. TV, movies, stores and such and this is how they spend their time with getting stuff easy. I am stopping watching this because I just can't take it. I can almost call it from the first episode when they show the people with their families. Sick
