You cant help but love Harpo. He was the a gentle loving man who loved children. He came from hard times but thought of the less fortunate too. Another angel who died to young.

When my mother was a little girl of nine she became sick and was at the Palm Springs hospital for children. One night she woke up to laughter outside her window. There stood Harpo playing croquet on the lawn. She remembered because he never spoke the whole time she watched. He did squeak his horn though.We all miss you terribly Ma.

Harpo is up there now with the angels, playing his harp. RIP Harpo, you did great!!

I love how this scene begins- with Harpo already looking up to the heavens before he silences the audience for three bewitching minutes with those magic fingers. I think I love "Alone" the most of all his solos. And it finishes with a lovely flourish. I was actually smiling tears at the very end.

You and me both. The song started as a big production number on the boat heading for America, with the ingenue leads and the chorus, so this was a reprise, but WHAT a reprise! Nobody could expect Harpo's artistry, so it was even more of a delight when he brought it out like this! "Night at the Opera" may be their most perfect movie as well as their most "Marxist" story--where the bad guys perform for money and the heroes perform for Love!

Harpo is my favorite of the Marx brothers. He was a wonderful person great comedian gentle sweet and kind. He found love when he was 41 and he and his wife adopted the children and he was a wonderful father and family man. We will never see talent like Harpo and Chico and of course Groucho. They were pure genius

Mesmerizing. A staple of all the Marx Brothers' movies, allowing him to show his mastery of the instrument. Also helps when he's given a great song to play.

nothing comes close. brings me to tears everytime i see this clip. All the chaos happening before and after but these moments cut straight through everything, hit the soul. One of the greatest moments on film always. When you see they used a different type of camera to film the kids faces.(2.36).you can see the director thought this is magic I have to use it.

The most difficult stringed instrument on the planet to play and Harpo was an absolute master of it.
@vincentwalker25243 жыл бұрын
No. The harp is not the "most difficult stringed instrument on the planet to play." The theorbo is more complex. But it's pointless to compare an instrument's complexity or difficulty to another. It's like arguing who's better: Bach or Monteverdi? Stravinsky or Shostakovich? Someone who can make a simple harmonica weep is far better than one who is only mediocre on the oboe - despite the oboe's greater "difficulty" at mastering. They're both wind instruments, but that doesn't mean that the oboist can readily fill in for the harmonicist - or vice versa.

Not only was Harpo a master at the harp, he played the harp by "his own rules". Experts are still debating on how Harpo tuned his harp.

Harpo Marx was SO talented and funny, but WOW, when he plays the harp it is just amazing. There will never be another just like him!

In his biography of 1961 "Harpo speaks" he states that he had never seen a harp before and all of a sudden his mother (and manager) decided that having the harp in their act would give more class to their performance. In 24 hours he was ready and playing harp (years earlier he had to do the same with a piano).

Harpo is also my favorite of the Marx brothers, then Chico then Groucho. Harpo was a wonderful man very talented. He really could play so wonderfully. His fingers were magical when he played the harpo. May they all rest in peace.

This song was written as a love song about two people being separated but finding comfort in knowing that while the other is out there, they are not alone. "But I can still remember the happiness we've found, though I may be alone..... I'm not alone" My grandpa introduced me to the Marx Brothers movies. He was genuinely one of the funniest people I've ever known and cared deeply for his family. This song, and that line have come to mean something deeper to me and my family since he passed away last year. Thank you, Harpo.
