I describe how I made my shelter, how I cut snare wire without a multitool, and show how I made my fishing pole while surviving in Mongolia.

Just watched you make your net just now on Netflix in Australia. Beautiful! Humans are the tool makers. That was a thing of beauty! Nicely done and a game changer for survival.

Great video! Thanks for taking a minute to talk about the "outbursts". You are so calm and peaceful in this video its hard to believe you are the same person they have portrayed you as on Alone! I love all of your victories on the show, the net you made was awesome! Thanks for taking time out of your life to keep us armchair survivalists entertained!

Very cool fishing pole. Metal wire is super useful for tons of stuff out there. The net was superb. In the top 5 of all things made on the show. Bouncing a nice fish when your starving has got to be excruciating, and its happened a lot to everyone. Bet you wished you had that net in Vancouver Look forward to new vids
@LarryRobertsbc6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Actually, the net wasn’t needed on VCI. I was using trot lines there and the fish hooked themselves pretty good.

Could you do a video showing how you made your Paiutes in Mongolia? It looks like you sawed a larger diameter log to 2" depths then stacked small boulders on the top disc.

I watched a guy fishing in Vietnam who had a technique that worked very well. He didn't use a rod at all. He wound his line around a smooth can. When he wanted to cast, he would twirl the hook & sinker in a circle and let it go like a slingshot. He held the can so that its long axis was in the direction of his cast. The line would spool off the end of the can. He was making consistent 30 to 40 yard casts with ease. To retrieve the line he simply wound the line back onto the can. In this way a round canteen could serve as a reel and serve a dual function.
@LarryRobertsbc6 жыл бұрын
I call that method a hand line. I used a short branch. Randy from my season used a found bottle.

I was so happy to see a Minnesotan on the show when you went the first time, and now again. Just don't let everyone know how awesome it really is here or they'll all be wanting to move in. Congratulations on your superb accomplishments. As a dude that also grew up in Chisago county, are there groups or resources in the area that you would recommend for a person that enjoys bushcraft/self-reliance type activities?
@LarryRobertsbc6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! As far as groups are concerned, I don’t know of any. I give classes occasionally and I know a few others who do as well.

Makes you more personable, really, because I think most people would react the same. At least some internal monologue along the same lines, bare minimum! Great video and good job on Alone so far!

@DirtTimeAdventures6 жыл бұрын
Were your eyelets facing up or down when you used the pole?
@LarryRobertsbc6 жыл бұрын
Actually I angled the pole towards the current so the line was resting on the loops of the eyelets and not towards the stick. That also let gravity hold the real on the the cross stick and it wouldn’t keep falling off.

Cool n educational. What's your thoughts on taking a leatherman style tool as one of your items on alone?
@LarryRobertsbc6 жыл бұрын
I think a multi tool is a great thing to take. If they would have given us more items I would have taken one, but I feel my belt knife was a better choice if I could only have one.

Larry Roberts I agree since your limited in the items you can bring.

Consider yourself lucky that the producers didn’t decide to take it one step further and invent their own content. In one of his videos, Liam Hoffman says that when they filmed him for Forged in Fire, they actually bleeped his dialog like he was cussing and he wasn’t. So I guess that’s not technically lying or making him say something he didn’t, but it’s still dishonest. In both cases, yours and his, it was “creative” editing done to tell their narrative, not yours. I wish people would think about this when they watch the news or read the newspaper. You only know what they tell you and how they tell you, regardless of the truth.
@LarryRobertsbc6 жыл бұрын
Very true, they take some liberties for sure.

If you could go over some other restrictions without breaking the NDA that would be helpful with many questions. The infamous "I would do this or that" or "Why don't they do this or that?" I find myself saying "Well, there may be restrictions we don't know about for one reason or another."
@LarryRobertsbc6 жыл бұрын
I can’t go into the restrictions too much for this season, but I will say there are restrictions on what game you can take and how you can take it.
@gonetoheck6 жыл бұрын
If I knew I was being filmed for a possible nation wide audience, I think I might've messed with people a bit and maybe run the fishing pole backwards to where the heavy part of the stick was pointing toward the water (and not film the actual pole you were using to catch fish with). I have a shirt that has a saying on it "There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid". :D Cheers !

I've tuned to your channel for a while, pre Alone, I have always admired you calm attitude. I also understand the Rage the comes out, it happens, we check ourselves when in public and for the most part as a practice whenever, but there is always that moment. And leave it up to the Alone producers or whoever it is that selects footage to show such aspects, its like they want to portray you as the angry old guy. We know better. Cool pole. If you get a chance check out Bushcraft U S A, a great thread on Alone going on there. bushcraftusa.com/forum/threads/alone-season-5-episode-8-redemption-mongolia.228531/#post-3944231
