When I needed to drill a hole in pipe or other round stock, I welded 2 pieces of angle together edge to edge in an M (or W) shape, with a hole midway for the bit to pass through as it penetrated the lower pipe wall. This holds the pipe or round stock firm while you drill.

Congratulations on a successful field test! In a survival situation, we must use what we have, not what was left at home. A deer hunting buddy lost his good arm in an work place accident, so doing everything 1-handed is a necessity for him! Thank you & may God bless you.

Thank you, Larry, for making it clear that oil and tar are coming from the same process of burning the birch bark, did I get it right? Could you please clarify - when they make a soap do they use oil or tar? Back in Eastern Europe they're selling this soap in retail stores
@LarryRobertsbc2 ай бұрын
Yes, it is the same process to get oil or tar. Tar just takes a little more processing. As far as soap goes I’d guess they use the oil. I can’t remember if I mentioned soap in this video, I don’t remember a birch oil soap. If they are making it I bet it sure smells like camp fire.

Have you seen the mini- conibear rat trap. The shape is identical to the 110, but only 3 1/2" square. I like my Koro traps for rats but I bought a mini- conibear to give it a try. I'm replacing the wire triggers for a pan. Nice video.
@LarryRobertsbc2 ай бұрын
No I haven’t. Seems like a cool trap for sure. Hopefully it will work out good for you.

Woah, you have omitted a LOT of information that a person needs to know before they can rely on this method! Trying this at a high latitude at or near a Solstice in the early/late morining/afternoon and you can get an NW/SW line. Not very accurate. The top of the stick's shadow will cast an East/West line all day long at or near the Equinoxes (March/Sept). But at other times of the year, the shadow will trace a hyperbolic curve with increasing curvature the closer you get to the Solstices (June/Dec) and the higher the latitude. You can use this method when it is not at or near an Equinox IF you do it at or near high noon (when the Sun transits your meridian). Look at the day of year lines on a horizontal or vertical sundial to see what I mean. Preferably one made for the higher latitudes.

Hey Larry! How long do you keep the needle on the batteries? Does the magnetization ever wear off?
@LarryRobertsbc9 ай бұрын
It doesn’t take very long. Depending on the battery literally seconds. It last forever so long as you store it away from metal. I’ve only seen them lose power if they are stuck to metal, the metal can become magnetized taking away from the needle.
