Okay. I am sitting here by the little wood stove in my tent at my mountain camp in western Virginia. It’s a drizzly Sunday morning. Tali girl is curled up asleep on my cot. I was looking to see if one of my favorite KZbinrs had posted another video as she often does on Sunday mornings. And there, out of nowhere, “Alone In Remote Alaska “ popped up on my screen. After watching this episode, I went to your about page. Then I watched episodes 1 & 2. Hooked now! As a KZbinr myself I have a very great appreciation for the very hard effort it takes to produce videos of the quality you do. Couldn’t quite make out your name in the trailer. We have an Ermine we named Ernie this year. He's a mouse killing machine. We see him almost every day but our dog has him terrorized so he doesn't show himself much. We could trap him in our squirrel trap but the family voted to keep him. We use Frost King vinyl sheets on the windows. One on the inside. One on the outside. So I can watch my boys on the hockey rink out my kitchen and living room window, and see animals. We also berm up the snow around the cabin, up 4' high. Hi Danny. That is good to know. When I tried it before, I placed it directly on the opening where the mice were entering the cabin, multiple times a day, and even set the open bottle right there! And the mice could care less about the scent. I even watched one chewing on a cotton ball that was soaked in the peppermint oil. 😳 The scent was so strong that it was making me want to leave the cabin! 🤢🤣 Maybe next year, I will get a big bottle of peppermint oil & a garden sprayer, then spray the entire perimeter as you suggested. Thanks for the suggestion. 💛

I have some advice on the snap traps. take a little piece of the square caramel candies and smash it into the bait tab then put a little bit of peanut butter over the caramel. they start on the peanut butter and get stuck in the caramel and set the trap off. I have only had one mouse not die and none got away. also the small tab the bar sits under when you set it. you can bend that tab and make the trap more sensitive. this makes the trap go off easy, you will have to practice this one so it isn't so easy to go off when you set it down. These have worked for me for years, I always get my mouse! lol. I'm new to your videos but I have been catching up on them. I really enjoyed watching. keep up the great work!

To listen or read books, to snuggle under a blanket, in a warm cabin, looking out a window with a hot cup of hot chocolate? What were the things you shipped with your son to.the cabin?? To make it more homely? How did you cope/ survive with being snowed in, alone.. granted you had the internet, but to be that alone.. I wonder how you were.. Been here for ten years or better, and even with the aggravations at times, can't IMAGINE living in a town or city, again. Then there's wood to feed the 'iron monster', my primary heat source. Most of October was spent getting in wood, since we had a long, beautiful 'Indian Summer's. But now the snows are on the mountains around me, though not here in the bottoms,(yet). I like to tell people, when I go travelin' that my home country is kind of like a cross between North Carolina, most of the year, and like Alaska, come deep winter. Good hunting.

Good morning Alone, from frosty NE Ohio! It's been a very busy two weeks here. Progress notes were due, and have been completed. I have an IEP due in three weeks - and it's well started. I may work on details and goals today while the laundry runs, and I'm cooking soup. My little petri dishes have given me another upper respiratory infection, and I'm not doing well. The cure all for that is hot tea with lemon and honey and homemade soup. This week it will be beef, barley and veggies. The kiddos wanted to make french toast this week, so I made them make homemade bread first. I'm all about teaching life skills to kids others think are unable to learn. One of my boys was very upset that he didn't get to help cook - but he was STREAMING germs, and I thought it unwise. He did get to eat the proceeds. We are scheduled to have Open House at the school on November 17, so my kiddos are going to spend the week prior making cookies to serve at the event. I think I'm going to limit myself to a couple double batches of pumpkin bars (that should be about 100 cookies) and 4 double batches of chocolate chip cookies (about 145 cookies) which should be enough. One of the little people across the hall from my room came over for a break last week while we were cooking. Using another students assistive communication device, he typed (he's non verbal) I want to cook with you. I'll have them help me mix the pumpkin bars - drop skills are a little advanced for first grade students. The teacher there was astounded that I'd tackle cooking with her kiddos and allow them to help - but they need the skill set. The more they learn early on, the better prepared they will be when they are forced to be alone. We've finally had a killing frost, so I need to go outdoors today and lop off the tops of my veggie plants. I'll allow them to compost in place, so I don't have to haul anything, but it does need to happen. The fellas are coming early tomorrow so I think I'll make breakfast instead of a big meal. They are going home early to pass out treats in their neighborhood. This is an annual event, and they get very upset if that plan changes. I'm delighted to hear your non-toxic recipe for rodent removal. As I keep my root cellar shut, I need something inside to get ride of the critters before they eat my lids off the canning jars! I'll get that started today. I'm always worried about using things with toxins because I don't want harm to my dogs (or the cat). This morning, I'm up (it's o'dark thirty here - 7 am on a Saturday) and rotating laundry. I decided it was time to refresh my down comforter - I will NOT want to get out of bed before spring! It will take several hours to fully dry, and in the meantime, I'll work on making soup. I have a variety of tasks that I should complete today, but the most important task is resting so I can be healthy for Monday. Hope you are doing well, and Kenai is as well. Your videos are always so fun to watch, and yet informative. I'd never make the leap to living alone in remote Alaska at my age but I would like to own some land and be able to feed my family from the proceeds. Deb

So glad you were able to help a fellow hunter out there! That kind of capable, sympathetic heart puts positive energy into the universe- well done you!!! Just returning from a day trip down to Hoboken to see our son and daughter in law at their new (old) house- the son that just retired from the army- where he has a new job in The City. They're doing great but man what a culture shock for us. How do folks live like that!? Anyhoo, it'll be a catch up day today- better get busy- butchering roosters today for the freezer. BIG HUGS SISTAH!!!! Catch ya soon!!❤❤❤

Yeah I agree with you there! A nice chunky snow storm right off the bat, why not! But I still have firewood buried under the snow! GRRR 🤪 Yeah Mike sent me the bubble wrap (amongst many other items) and I was really anxious to test this out. Mid winter will be the true test! I have heard many other recipes for this, Jiffy muffin mix, pancake batter but I think making it sweet is a great idea but always add the baking soda and your golden. It does work on rats! OMG you went to the city!! Are you and hubby ok? 🤭 You may need some meds. Get some rest and forget everything you saw! Well except your son and daughter in law! 🤣

Dear brave sister. Thank you so much for another entertaining video and information. Im glad that you found somebody who will clear your driveway in winter. Cross my fingers that your mice recipe will be successful. How about a cat in your home? We had last year rats in the house they bite into everything and destroyed things. 2 days after we got 2 cats from the rescue shelter they were gone. When we lived in Mallorca, Spain - we used also bubble foil to insulate the shutters in winter. A 100 year old Finca in Spain is looking romantic in hot summer but pretty much cold in winter. Glad you could help in time the hunter with his injury. Wonderful views again of Alaska. I hope that you can get your logs in the right place. Thank you so much for all your efforts and work to make so heartwarming videos. Sending you much love from Bali. Here it's hot as hell and very stormy in the nights. Branches and coconuts falling in the garden. Big kiss to you and Kinai

Knowing someone to plow the driveway will be a game changer for sure. Just have to be sure when I ask them to come out. It's not crazy expensive but it does pull out of my tractor fund! And yeah the rain was just a nice addition to make stacking that wood harder to get too! CRAZY

Was wondering if in future winter videos, at the end, you could add a recipe or a mix with winter comfort food recipes. I am as also wondering if there are other winter hobbies you enjoy? Sewing? Crochet/knitting? Reading? Puzzles? Hiking?Besides daily chores how do you spend your “free” 😂 time alone?
@AloneinRemoteAlaska2 жыл бұрын
Free time? Hmmm what's that? LOL 🤣 My recipes will be on stand alone videos going forward. Mostly uploaded on Sunday's. Unless it's an easy drink or something. But you can expect to see more recipe uploads soon. The only reason I separate them now is the video analytics show a massive drop off of viewers when I start a recipe (when they were at the end of my VLOGS) At least as a stand alone recipe video, only people interested can watch AND I can be more detailed. I do like to sew but puzzles not so much. I may pick up more hobbies like knitting or crochet as time allows but for now, I would say sleeping is my main hobby! 😉😁🧡😴

Another great video. Question..... what do you do in your down time to keep from getting lonely or bored? I know you have plenty of work around the cabin and in all the ways you prepare for the seasons. I know you have a full time job as well. So when I say down time I'm of course refering to the times when all of the above are complete. Do you read alot, or do hand crafts or work jigsaw puzzles? I just can't imagine being absolutely away from all other people for long periods of time, especially when you are confined to your property during winter months. I admire you and your courage and strength.

Hi Debra! Until recently, I have not had much down time. I do a fairly good job of keeping busy and when I do have or allow myself some downtime, I like to just sit and look at the mountains and forest behind the cabin. I do have hobbies though, sewing, fishing, sightseeing. I hope to have the time to do all of these in the near future. 🤗💛

It’s so good to hear that you have someone to plow out your driveway this winter. It’s wonderful how you always take that Xtra step to consider safety 1st, when possible. It’s also great that you have supplies on hand to spray foam, insulate, reflectex…all the things needed to seal up the gaps to keep the rodents out & the heat in😊. Stay Safe. Great Video. Happy Halloween 🎃

HA! It certainly was a ton of snow. I was expecting some snow fall but Mother Nature decided to out flank me on this one. The guillotine ice was a new one for me! But at least it all sheds off quickly! Mouse traps are working and have been catching less. Hopefully that means there are fewer around! But you always know when mice are around! Caribou season lasts another 3 months so who knows! Just depends on the snow we get now. Thank you so much Teresa! 🧡🤗💚

thank you very much for the tip for the rodent's baking soda and flour well be trying that, little tip would like to share with you in turn is i bait my traps like you have and putting the traps in the freezer then when i set them then they have to work little harder because the bait is frozen and i find that works pretty good especially the little mice

When I first moved here I had a bucket trap I made like the one you showed placed outside in a covered area. One day I came out and there was a beautiful large gopher snake happily eating mice out of the bucket! My favorite traps for in the house are the ones with the bait cover that triggers the trap when lifted. Very easy to set and effective. They can't push up the cover unless they are in a good position for a quick clean kill. It seems to help to vary the bait so they don't develop an aversion. I've also sometimes had luck with the metal boxes where they go in but can't come out.

Just found your vlog, I'm in awe of beauty, and wildlife of Alaska. Loved your video! You're living the dream of many. I certainly know it's not all easy, or all fun and games. Great work! Regarding the mice/rodent situation. We had an issue where we live in an old farmhouse with mice. We tried every thing, finally did the concoction mix you mentioned, it worked well. We used equal parts flour, baking soda, and sugar. At times we also used borax. As for the mouse traps, hot glue 1 piece of hard dog food on the tip. Let the glue dry, set the trap. This always works! I got this tip off the internet a couple years back. We were able to get all our mice. Then went to the pound, and picked up a cat, never had a mouse in the house since getting the cat. Kind of hard to get a cat up there...LOL! We also ran into the problem of wild field rats. The farm attracts them because of all the cows, and horses which live on the surrounding farms(the feed seems to attract them). They get under the hood of vehicles, and love to eat the wires on the wiring harnesses. The wires are all soy coated, rats, and mice love the soy coating. You may also want to protect your vehicles as well. I'm sure you already know all about this. Be safe, and stay warm. I'm happy I found your vlog. P.S. Good luck hunting!

I've used bubble wrap on my windows in the UK and we are no way as cold as you are there! I've also had a rodent problem for the 20+ years I've lived in this house as they run freely between the terraced houses the only thing that ever works are those baited old fashioned traps I use nuts they seem to like them and check regularly. There's no worse smell than a decomposing mouse!

The snap trap that you have if you run a piece of string through the hole and knot it, rub peanut butter or butter on it. They want to get every bit from it and pull on it and snap they are done. Never thought of the sausage. Just found your channel. ❤

Dang mice! I’ve found the best after decades of cabin life is the kill traps that you just squeeze to release them. You can use peanut butter, you just have to place it correctly so they have to go dig a bit for it. And what a dump of snow you got!!!!

It’s great you’re showing your snow life. I lived the same for 8 years, I moved to a remote custom home with my husband, he passed away before the first snow, I was use to Seattle weather, it was an eye opener when it snowed 15 feet that year, I learned a lot including roof raking. It was an experience that made me better, I survived and learned how to do a hell of a lot to live. Thank you for your videos and take care ❤

Ahhh Carla I am so sorry to hear that! 😌 The first snow seems to have more significance. It did for me. Colorado weather prepared me for cold and snow but not like this! I don't know how much snow we got my first winter but I was told by some locals that it had been awhile since it was that bad! So my first winter was fun! The adapting to winter life in Alaska is an eye opener and yes, it makes you better and stronger. No excuses just do what needs to be done! 😉 I hope you will join my KZbin journey here in Alaska! I have so much left to do! I could always use some good advice from someone who has been there! 🤗🧡

Oh my! I had.a flashback to our basement when all the 'mouse treasures' falling out of the insulation! Our 'home base' home was built in 2 stages. They builders lived in the basement while building the upstairs, so the basement ceiling was insulated. When we were finishing the basement we had to pull some insulation down and in one spot had a huge amount of collected seeds and other winter food come pouring down! I collected a 5 gallon bucker full! So much work for a little mouse!! My best mouse deterrent is Gracie! (my cat).We do use the repeating mouse traps where they get in and can't get out. I don't like them as the poor little things basically die slowly (after they eat any other mouse previously caught in it, lol). But, it's what we leave set when we are away from the cabin for months as you don't need to reset them. Anyways...too bad about the caribou. Kenia will be sad☹ Those metal roofs are a blessing and a curse. We hauled in enough to roof the cabin several years ago after having done rolled roofing a few times. Now, we need to bring in some more for the kitchen addition we put on a few years ago. Great for shedding the snow, but dangerous! Be careful!! Our home base has always had metal and unfortunately, it slides down in front of our steps from the front door and piles up all winter until we get home and have to shovel a tunnel through it or steps over it. Not a good design plan for the guy who built the house. This is long enough! Take care!-Sue

Hello, I have had my cabin for 12 years. The first year I had caught a few mice inside. Then I started spraying windex with ammonia around the doors and the outside of the cabin where the cabin intersects with the ground and haven't caught one mouse inside. It seems to also keep the Red squirrels away as well. BTW, I am in complete agreement about sticky traps.

Thanks for the tips on mice! I'm the first stop for the little squeakers across several miles of wheat fields. Every year I get several influxes, biggest is when the temps start dropping. Somehow they have stolen several traps🤷♀️ And are professionals at licking a peanut chunk out of the curl. I've heard of melting hard candy over it but they eventually get wise to that. I will grab a pepperoni stick tomorrow! And make up some new bait😊

I just ran across your channel and enjoy some of the content that fellow Alaskans put up on KZbin. If I were 30 years younger I would be living remote myself. How many mice does it take to make a fur coat? I had to set up a trap line at one of my places years ago and what worked really well for me was a 4’ x 4” PVC pipe with a trap in both ends. I always used peanut butter but since you have licker mice whatever suits there appetite is a score. Stay warm and healthy. I’ll check out more of your videos this winter.

A mouse fur coat! 🤣 That is so funny...... and EEEWWW!! Your trap idea sounds interesting! I think the mice are the ones that are liking the peanut butter but I suppose it could be the voles. Hi Alone 👋 it’s great to see you become part of your wider (much wider) community, I can imagine that having a strong community goes along way when you’re living in such a remote and harsh environment. I can see some future improvement projects being noted for the summer months to make winters safer. Bummer about the hunt, but glad to hear another is planned. I’m pleased you and your hunting party came across the hunter who was injured and were able to respond so quickly (I’m sure he is too!!). Till next video, have a great week 🌻🌻

When I met both my "neighbors" they interrogated me (very nicely) because they wanted to make sure I wasn't some city slicker who just thought living in remote Alaska was easy. They have seen SO MANY people only make it through one winter and that was only because they cant really go anywhere 🤣 But they soon realize that I came here prepared! Yes I would have taught myself how to hunt out here but being shown where to go and how to do it just saves me so much time. And nothing wrong with knowing more people to say howdy to at the gas station makes me feel more welcome. And I am glad my training kicked in when we saw they hunter that needed first aid. A common hunting mistake he made field dressing the caribou and he had cut himself pretty bad. 😉🧡

What do you do with the dead critters? Toss out for the wildlife? Will they also get terrible sick from the bait? Is a covered parking shed in the future? Out of total ignorance can I ask a question. Why isn’t there a doorway into a sealed wood shed inside the house so you can access wood from inside without having to clear snow away and avoid going outside. Via a mud room so cold air doesn’t come into main cabin.
@AloneinRemoteAlaska2 жыл бұрын
One of the next projects I would like to get done is to have the front of the arctic entry covered with a roof. Basically extend the big slant roof all the way to the front of the cabin. Then I would have a door going into a "dry" area for stacked wood. the current wood shed was a temporary structure my contractor put up with extra wood laying around. If I want to keep that permanent he will need to shore it up better for sure. Thank you so much Lynda! 🧡😉
