Also, most of the functions are just actually activated after the Faro Robots went offline, but Minerva ir working since day 1 so "she" is alive for the longest time.

I always read it as MINERVA, POSIDAN and AETHER never had the structure to be fully sentient, so going back to what they had the framework for was preferable to them. Like, MINERVA is clearly a little afraid as much as it has the capacity for that emotion but it drops back into being a subordinate function because it knows that's what it's for.

I really appreciate the voice actor for GAIA. She made it so that GAIA seems to have the familiar disembodied and hollow voice much like the AI we have ourselves, and yet somehow be able to portray sentience, confidence and emotion. Just hearing her voice leaves me much in awe.

In a way Elisabet and Gaia are Aloys two mom's. It is Elisabets DNA that was used to make Aloy but Gaia was the one who incubated, grew and birthed her via Eleuthia-9. I can understand why Aloy might be flustered to meet her.

That’s why this scene was such a huge disappointment for me. I always imagined restoring Gaia would be the big emotional payoff we worked towards after collecting all of the other sub-functions. This scene felt like it lacked all heart. Probably because this isn’t the original Gaia who had the conviction to throw a Hail Mary by creating Aloy & saving the world. I’ll never understand why the writers went this route. It’s as if they don’t understand their own story, characters, & themes from Zero Dawn.

Spoiler for first game and DLC: The real reason why all the animals are missing is simply because they went extinct - and I mean way before the Faro plague. In the years preceding it, the earth was having the biggest ecological crisis yet, causing massive damage to the ecosystem, including animals. In the DLS for the first game, Frozen Wilds, there are collectable statuettes of animals, which you can bring to a holo memorial to view them. Those include bears, wolves, and some type of deer or elk. All of those were lost to time.

Spoilers!!!!!! You learn that Far Zenith got their hands on ARTEMIS and ELEUTHIA soon after they arrived on Earth. They already had APOLLO as a copy of it was given to them in a deal with Zero Dawn. In fact you go to where ELEUTHIA fled to after you get either AETHER, DEMETER or POSEIDON. As to where ARTEMIS fled to we don't know.

The brief moments where the sub functions “speak” about the prospect of being merged back into Gaia are both unsettling and heartbreaking. I remember one of them says “mother….yes”, and MINERVA being afraid of “ceasing”, then asking if her misery would cease….wow. Never thought I’d feel such empathy for AI!

"In you, all things are possible" I really empathised with Aloy when she confessed her self-doubt. I loved the way Gaia responded, telling her she will succeed based on her previous accomplishments. It was compassionate yet also logical. I often suffer from self-doubt, especially in my job. We can often forget how important it is to remember past succeeds and how that will help you to prevail through any future challenges. Thanks Gaia :)

I thought GAIA was an incredibly fascinating character just from her message to Sobek in HZD, that perfect mathematical clarity that didn't negate her emotional response and well-developed empathy. The fact they managed to keep that going in a half hour of exposition is jaw dropping. Just the "So it is Aloy, not Elizabet" is so touching, her knowing this is a clone her earlier self ordered to be created but embracing her as a person in her own right; that she reassures Aloy not with Elizabet's abilities and qualities that she inherited and was created to use (and that Aloy had constantly compared herself against) but with her own achievements is very interpersonally savvy.

I know there are so many people fear mongering about the advent of AI, I mean even In the game we have examples of AI gone bad. However I choose to believe that we could create an AI just like Gaya with a similar purpose and use her to see the life through the Galaxy and protect life on our own planet. I see the positive side of ai not its negatives. The people who hate it and fear it are the people who would lose power over the people because AI With the benefit of humanity in mind would always reveal their evil to the public! And with AI helping humanity evolve to the next level that next level that would mean that those who have greed in their hearts would lose money because the people would no longer be interested in giving it to them they would be interested in moving beyond the stars.

'Two Faces of Tomorrow' by James P. Hogan is very interesting in that regard. It starts with an accident on the moon that nearly kills 5 people due humans not understanding the new computer system. A similar mistake on earth could kill thousands. Making the problem worse is that the scientists have developed a new system. The crux is, the system in place already has enriched humanity to an incredible degree, the new one could take them to unimaginable heights. But with the risk of humans making errors with the current system and the unknown risks of the new one and no one, not even the specialists having an answer they are stuck between reverting the system, leaving it or upgrading it. The main problem is, even if they downgrade, they will have to cross the bridge one day. And so an experiment is proposed on an isolated space colony. I won't go beyond the setup so not to spoil anything, but it is very interesting. Sadly I only got the comic adaption from Dark Horse, but looking right now there is an audio version available.

Is that everyone wants to be in control and the whole point of an AI is that you are not in control the computer is. But imagine a system like the video game Mega man battle network where everyone has their own personal ai assistant. True ai assistant fully conscious and aware like your best friend. And they do all your Internet stuff that you need done for you. In addition to that these AI is controlled the traffic system you're never going to be stuck waiting 5 minutes on a light to turn green when no one is coming from the other direction. With that kind of AI we'll be able to have our flying cars without having risk of accidents or Self driving cars in which you would never have to worry about accidents accidents again let alone drunk drivers. And of course the biggest worry about ai is them taking your jobs from us. Yes with AI and sufficiently advanced robotics a lot of the most dangerous or tedious work could be Performed by a robot better than a human and in safer conditions. But something people forget is with that kind of advancement and technology we could quickly become a post scarcity society. And would no longer need to worry about food or clothing or shelter production and could just do away with money . Of course that's the biggest concern of the rich they want to have money so that no one else can have any. They can't imagine any other way to live than to be able to Lord over other people and in the end that's what it's all about AI would end the ability to Lord over other people

@@Siegberg91 This. APOLLO's 'destruction' meant that humanity never learned that HEPHAESTUS' machines were meant to enrich and cultivate the planet for their survival. Without that knowledge, humanity regressed to hunting and HEPHAESTUS originally had its machines simply run away, but when the Extinction Signal struck, it gained sentience and saw humanity as enemies encroaching on it and acted accordingly by fielding machines meant for killing (Thunderjaws, Ravagers, Clawstriders, etc.)

the developers math was wrong on the transmission. if the transmission took 8.22 years to travel to earth and only stopped after a confirmation signal was received then earth would continue to recieve the signal for another 8.22 years because the broadcast only stops after the confirmation was received which leaves another 8.22 years for the tail end of the signal to reach earth.

Well it seems to me the math is good. The sender sent the signal and 8.6 years later, it is received on Earth and the confirmation signal is sent. When the sender receives the confirmation signal, Earth had received the first signal for 8.6 years. Then the sender stops sending the signal but, as you say, the tail end of the signal still takes 8.6 years to reach Earth. So it's indeed 8.6 + 8.6 = 17.2.

Kinda wish we could somehow preserve the AI aspect of the subfunctions. I wonder if GAIA would find their consult helpful or less lonely. Or at least more interactions with them before restoring them to their original state. Especially with DEMETER, whom I found very disappointing (what the hell was wrong with its voice? Demeter in Greek myth is a GoddESS), especially when taking into account its obvious love for Elisabet, given the fact that in the first game's ending, it had wreathed Elisabet's corpse in one of its characteristic triangular flower patterns when Aloy found her near her house.

Wait.. I just figured something out. Something that kind of stands out. At one point Aloy asked Gaia about the Zenieths and how long it would take them to get here. GAIA mentions that with the oddessy it would have normally taken them 30p years. But they have a better ship. She also states if they left at the exact moment the extinction signal was sent and headed to earth they made it in 29 years. In other words that would mean that Aloy is 29 years old. We know in the first one that Aloy was around 19 or 20 when she won at the prooveing. So it's taken 9 years give or take for all of the first one to end, and for her to continue after defeating Hades the first time. Which would make sense considering it wouldn't have taken only a few days for her to destroy hades. Not with all the information and everything she had to do to get to that point.

The story made this impossible. During the interrogation by Sylens, Hades revealed the location of the proving lab which could not be accessed remotely. And Aloy used a genuine master override to purge Hades as well.

No, just MINERVA at the moment. GAIA tasks her with collecting three functions she located, AETHER, DEMETER and POSEIDON, and after that HEPHAESTUS. Also Far Zenith aren't aliens, but an Old World think-tank that fled to another solar system.

Gaia still has logical processes. The idea of an undefeatable weapon is impossible. The whole "throughout history" may be a reference to her general understanding of humanity whilst using Aloy's learned knowledge and experiences as a reference point.

It annoys me that the changed Minerva's colour from purple to yellow, presumably so Hephaestus from orange to purple as it's more villainous. Purple is my favourite colour and yet for generations it's been used in movies, games and television as the bad guy's colours. The first game explicitly shows us this, and even I this video she states that she has misgivings about making killer machines, to which Aloy responds by pointing out - again - that Elisabet purposely imbued her with a conscience. GAIA has to feel, because she has to _care_ about Earth and her task to truly fulfil the terraforming system's potential.

As incredibly butchered of the tribe arcs are, the restoration of the mechanical makers to guild and protect their former masters is a very appealing story. The sheer anguish each AI had to endure as they were separated without another to monitor them is NEARLY akin to how humans stagnate and repeat traditions as nature evolves around them. Gaia was one of my biggest disappointments with Forbidden West. After the first game, I’d always imagined restoring her would be the final goal that the story would build up to in a big emotional payoff. I don’t know why the writers decided to do it like this. There was no emotion to this scene whatsoever. I think it underscores the bigger issue with Forbidden West, that the game lacks the heart felt in its predecessor.
