One of the reasons people in the past were passionate about flowers and even fruit paintings is that there was true seasonality - you just couldn't have roses in winter for most of human history so the art stirred feelings of luxury, longing, gratitude, and more. We live in abundance that's taken for granted now; the still lives just don't hit the same way. However, they can stir something else, like a love of nature, simplicity, youth, potential, growth, etc. When that's done, it's brilliant.
@billcberger
@billcberger 3 жыл бұрын
Yes and an entire language existed then both in the West and (a different language) in the Far East that spoke to seasonality, rarity, commonality, but also specific values, desires, passions, virtues, etc. even the stage of the flower’s freshness-decay carried meaning (on its own and relative to the other items in the painting). As a gardener, sure, I get some of that from my own lived experience, but I guess I have to admit that, without spending all the time it would take to learn that language, I am not able to “read” the painting as it could have been when it was created. I mean I took an entire course on nothing but this when I was in university in Japan, and I def can read some Asian floral paintings, but I read them at the equivalent of something like a fourth grade level.

Love this comment. I am trying to get into flower paintings and having this tidbit will help me modernize the concept in a different way. Sort of to think of why women today love to have weekly bouquets in their homes, and flower tattoos but not paintings or photos of flowers so much. It's such a big trend for modern influencer to be seen with their bouquets but for art, they like completely different, often abstract concepts.

@@loati94 that’s unfortunate. There are truly some amazing paintings in history. Maybe you just haven’t found the ones that you like. Personally I really love Basquiat and Van Gogh. There’s someone at my university who takes inspiration from Caravaggio’s style and I wouldn’t be surprised if they become huge on day, love their work. Picasso Munch Bacon Pollock and Rothko are all recent geniuses. Condo is also really interesting (although he’s still alive so I don’t think he counts as an old master).

I am a design student and when I first stumbled across your art a few months ago I was happy a more traditional artist was implimenting ellements into the "old genre" of painting through meathods of design found mostly in digital art, that added a fresher/ modern look to the paintings. Not to mention your mastery use of oil paint. Keep inspiring!

Flowers are the most beautiful things in the world. If you find them boring, that can only be very unfortunate and a missed opportunity. Also, you kind of imply your painting is fresher (better?) than the old dutch paintings. Very debatable.

Great video... it got me excited about doing art again :)) I think flowers are one of the classics, they will eventually come back again. Personally ever since i started gardening I noticed flowers emit some sort of superiority. There is nothing more beautiful then a fresh healthy grown flower... the colors, forms, detail, it just looks incredible, and then how its beauty fades as it wilts and then starts again as a new one grows. Its almost magical

I'm not sure that he brought flower paintings into the 21st century as much as he brought the principles of Mid Century Modern art into the 21 century. "Form follows function" isn't a modern concept, and "design before accuracy" was pretty much the hallmark of much of 20th century art and illustration. I'm not a huge fan of flower paintings, but I will say that those Dutch flower paintings he dismisses have stood the test of time. Whether we're a fan of them, or not, we know them. He says that his 21st century version of flower painting is based on current design trends. That's great but design trends come and go. If he's trying to appeal to today's audience, what happens when the trends change? His style will become outdated very quickly. like 1980s hairstyles. In art, people usually embrace an artistic movement, not the other way around.

I thought that this was acrylic paint, but it's oil! I love flowers so much this looks so beautiful! Can I have some advice please? I am new to painting so much so that I haven't painted even a single one. Can you please tell me whether I should use acrylic or oil paints? I am concerned about my health in regards to the fumes that these paints give out. I don't have to deal with that. Are oil paints better in this regard than acrylics? Without solvents of course I mean. If I use oil paints with alma prima technique (without solvents) is that the most healthy option? How long does it take for an oil painting to dry? When can I varnish? Or should I just use acrylic? No one seems to wear a mask and gloves while handling paints so am I just overthinking?

I typically don't like floral paintings by itself but when it's used more background for other subjects, it's works for me. The great painting of Sargent: Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose; is one of my favorites of all time. I have done floral sketches as studies but I won't commit them to paint because like you say, it's not interesting enough. I do like your modern floral painting. I love your use of large brush strokes to give striking texture to the painting. You have a great sense of contrast with brush strokes, tone and color. Thanks for the video.

What is this man’s problem with historic realism, seriously? The put-downs of other artists are really off-putting and cringey. The “pick-me” energy really kills this otherwise great video. You don’t need to dismiss the Renaissance masters to elevate your own work, it makes you sound petty. Millions of people flock to museums every year to look at the works of the Dutch masters for a reason. They’re not boring or outdated, they’re still inspiring artists today. If something doesn’t resonate with you, it doesn’t mean it’s bad.

Yes, good video. My own personal quibble is that I don't like black or even near black in a painting. I feel that the boundaries of pure white and pure black are boundaries that I like to keep a good distance from. Like if I were playing a ball game, I would always want to keep a good distance between me and the fencing around the play area. But you and others may differ.

I love this - such clean lines, so fresh and vibrant - just beautiful, definitely modern with an energy that makes my heart sing. Wonderful

I really like the perspective that you demonstrate when it comes to still life, flowers specfically. I'm really not that fond of doing still life myself but bridging the modern look and design with this subject is interesting. Good work as always!
