This is by far the my favorite of the epic climbs series. Mostly because of the humor and comraderie we see between Matt and Tom. The ending is the best, comparing the times of the past winners and that of Matt and Tom. Absolutely the BEST!

I did this as part of the Marmotte Gran Fondo. I hit the bottom of the Alpe after about 150km of cycling including Galibier and Telegraphe. Before the race I'd done zero training except for the Dragon ride in Wales. I told myself 'whatever happens do NOT stop on the Alpe". Despite seriously painful hot foot I got up it without blowing up and in respectable time. Such a great day out. Beer never tasted so good!

This video brings back really wonderful memories of that ride, in spite of the pain, no oxygen, and plenty of rain and lightning.

Most mere mortals could never do this in an hour - that's something like 4W/Kg for 60mins, definitely not what your average cyclist could manage! Took me 1hr 27 last summer. Got a benchmark to beat next time. Fantastic mountain though and a truly epic climb.
@geg_otmopo35 жыл бұрын
4W/kg is like just 3-4 months riding. Basic fitness.

Лёха Белочкин it’s definitely not
@geg_otmopo35 жыл бұрын
Godwin Austen Then you should look on what you eat, drink and how much you sleep. Just riding pretty hard sometimes without any structure training is enough for 4W/kg FTP. My 56 old dad can do 4.2W/kg for 20 mins. I’d say it’s the same as running 5km in 20 mins. Again, basic fitness.

Climbed Alpes d'Huez three times in 1997, 1998 and 1999. My best time was in 1998 in 1:29.55. Enjoyed all of the cycling vacancies in the France alps. I did a lot of the legendary climbs there. Telegraph, Galibier, Madeleine, Grand Cucheron, Croix de Fer, Iseran, Cenis, Agnel, Izoard, Allos, Cayolle, Vars, Larche, Bonette and also the mighty Mont Ventoux. Wish I could do this again.

Awww, man! I SO wish I watched this video before I rode up last week on July 21. It would have made SO much difference with my performance. Wait a sec. No, it wouldn't have! I STILL would have been staring 5 to 10 feet in front of me for over an hour. The highlights of ascending Alpe d'Huez the days preceeding the Tour de France arrival are all the fans lining the roadway already who come out and cheer you on like you are a pro rider. Didn't matter that it was raining, they cheered me on, especially at Dutch corner. ALLEZ ALLEZ!

Not to be too pedantic, but Pantani didn't win on Alpe D'Huez in 1998 en route to winning the Tour, because it wasn't on the route that year. He won the stage to Les Deux Alps after he attacked on the Gallibier. Deux Alps is like "Alpe D'Huez Lite". Pantani won on Alpe D'Huez in 1995 and 1997
