Alpha radiation
In the video, I wanted to demonstrate to you the range of alpha radiation. The experiment with the gold leaf might remind some of you of the famous Rutherford experiment :)

Please do make more explanations like these for the other types of radiation! This was really interesting for an amateur like me trying to learn more (and maybe remember some HS physics :P)

Could alpha particles be used to measure the thickness of the paper or gold leaf (like a crude nuclear thickness gauge)
@s0rc3
@s0rc3 2 ай бұрын
Yes, you can do this with Rutherford Backscattering (assuming you know the density of the material you can calculate the true thickness).

That program looks more like it came out in 1997 rather than 2013

True that😂 I don't think nuclear chemists have a big interested in having a really fancy Programm that only they are going to use if it means, they have to Programm it themselfe😅 as simple as possible.

The website looks like it was written in Geocities at the same time. "SRIM-2008 has been downloaded >20,000 times, and has no problems." oh, ok then 🤣 The program was actually written in 1983 by Ziegler and Biersack and only periodically updated every few years since. The GUI seen here was probably added in the mid to late 90s I'm guessing in Visual Basic. Since Ziegler seems to have retired from IBM about a quarter of a century ago, it would not surprise me to learn that they're both, um....ya know... dead now. Hopefully the source code is released somewhere because if not, when the website registration runs out, that will be the end of SRIM / TRIM.

@SimonsNuclearchemistry just asking is it possible to replicate rutherford's actual experiment with zincsulphide posphor and radium in u r channel

Yeah it's ancient lol. But physics hasn't changed much since, I used it for simulating some sputter behavior and it gave results that broadly tracked with experimental results (our target wasn't a pure monocrystalline material so there were some density variations and such that threw off the values from what the simulation predicted).

If you pass alphas through a cloud of electrons, do they just become normal helium?
@SimonsNuclearchemistry
@SimonsNuclearchemistry 2 ай бұрын
Yes but you don't need "a cloud of electrons". Normal Air has enough^^ :D

Just got off the brand new bell telephone with Rutherford and my self-taught lawyer, and since it's different than the gold foil experiment, Rutherford has no legal way to sue us But im still confused at how this picture box can fit in my trousers pocket, but once I find out, then I'm getting myself a Nobel prize
