Scorn’s been getting mixed reviews since it was released yesterday, and I can totally see why, BUT this is genuinely one of my favorite gaming experiences of the year. I think it’s priced too high considering it’s a short 3-4 hour experience and it’s definitely NOT a FPS (which I was kinda expecting it to be). There is gun-based combat, but guns are best used as a last resort. It’s a slow paced survival horror game with scarce ammo, high-risk enemy encounters and a heavy focus on MYST-esque puzzles. I’m a sucker for H.R. Giger’s artwork and the devs have done an incredible job recreating his style. The world they’ve built is remarkable and every single area is packed full of detail that must have taken an incredible amount of work to create (and is probably why the game’s so short). I find it hard to recommend it to others at the current price point, but speaking personally it’s worth every penny to me. It's the most beautiful and repulsive nightmare I’ve ever experienced. I really hope the devs create a sequel/DLC as I’d love to be able to return to that world. This video features the first four acts of the game (with a few of the longer puzzles condensed to save time). The fifth act is incredibly gory so I’ve uploaded it to the ABG: The Dark Side channel. You can check it out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJmUoWqvaaqtga8

Zdzisław Beksinki's definitely an influence, but this game's art style is much more influenced by Giger. Beksinki focused on dystopian surrealism while Giger was all about the biomechanical horror that blended human physiology with machines. Dark Seed 3D this ain't". It is at least a FPS with limited ammo and, yes, still amazingly atmospheric. But about the time you got your second weapons upgrade it started to feel like a Geiger coat of paint on a standard FPS. And, don't get me wrong, it's an amazing coat of paint. But I feel like it could have done more than swap bullets for bio-alien bullets and keycards for bio-alien key brains.

The Visuals and atmosphere are jaw dropping. The textures and mechanically grotesque setting is thee best part of this game! I knew nothing about this game like others did so seeing it with freath eyes this is moving art! Still wish it had puzzles that were slightly more entertaining but at the same time I think the slower pace and quiet mundane nature of it, sided with the gut wrenching organic machinery I think it only makes sense. I'm torn. I wouldn't call it a game in order for it to succeed. It is art. It becomes a downfall if your going to advertise it as more then a animated novel if that makes sence? Despite me wanting to critique what I don't like about the game I think k that's also its strongest points. When watching I just wanted to leave. Everything felt icky, it's confusing not because I don't know what to do, but because the world is so weird and strange I'm left with such a large question "why?" I want to give it a low ranking for game play but my brain keeps saying this was on purpose. All in all it also somehow feels like one of my favorite games you have played so far! So cool!

Thanks for the gameplay, ABG. Been quite eager to watch this playthrough ever since the game was first announced, but I sadly won't make the investment and actually buy the game itself. For anyone who found themselves invested in the scarce lore of this game, I have a bit of a theory I wanted to share. (SPOILERS AHEAD) There's clearly two separate characters we play as, with the first character being tarnished by some sort of infection that turns him into a parasite. For clarity's sake, I'll call the Act 1 guy "Parasite" and the Act 2 guy "Host". Most theories I've seen online revolve around the pre-infection Parasite and the Host sharing the same desire to travel to the desert temple and cross through the final gate (perhaps to join the others in a new world), and they see the ending as tragic, since the now rogue Parasite prevents the Host or himself from achieving this feat. However, I find the ending to be still tragic, but only for the Host. I believe the Parasite retained most if not all of his conscience after being grotesquely transformed into his new form. In fact, I believe that the Parasite's intentions were always to prevent anyone else to cross the final gate. The Parasite might have wanted to close or guard the final gate from the very beginning of the game, for all we know, since there is no dialogue at all that leads us to believe he had the intent to cross the gate himself. He did want to get to the desert palace, allegedly, but his intentions are never truly known. It does appear, however, that after turning into a parasite, he gains the ability to not only latch to a host, but to control them. I base this on the fact that, when he latches to the Host, we can see a momentary overlay of the Parasite's face flaps surrounding the eyes of the Host, as if he was replacing the senses of his newfound body. Furthermore, the Host seems awfully calm after the Parasite latches to his body, seeing how he calmly grabs the gun offered by the Parasite and just keeps on going. Perhaps this is hinting at the Host having his mind overruled by the Parasite's. Seeing how the hands of the Parasite aren't shaped properly to activate machinery or use wrist keys, latching to a new body and controlling it would be his only way of taking the train towards the desert temple. One might ask then "Why would he unlatch himself from his Host during the final act? Why would he hurt himself in the process by mutilating his tendrils around the Host's left hand?". And to that, I say that was a necessary evil. It could be that, despite his control over the Host's body, the Parasite isn't able to fully control his growth around him. Their forced evolution towards a more plant-like form could be an unfortunate side effect of the Parasite's transformation, and as such he would need to unlatch himself temporarily from his Host and let him open the gates before latching himself again. If that were to be the case, then at least one of our characters would have won. Hell, we wouldn't even have really played as two characters (aside from during the first part of Act 2 and a bit during Act 5 after having the Parasite removed), as we were doing the will of the Parasite all along, guiding him towards the final gate and letting him grow into an obstacle for future trespassers. Perhaps his uncontrollable growth when latched to the Host will ensure the gates will remain forever closed once their body mass envelops what remains of the ending passage. There's my two cents, an ever so slightly more positive outlook on a very bleak game. Nonetheless, a very interesting concept executed wonderfully in the visual department, and slightly slow-paced gameplay-wise.

Streamed this yesterday (and going to try to finish it tonight) IDK why it's getting such negative reviews. I've been waiting for this game since high school and so far it's meeting every expectation. EDIT: After having completed it, I can say with certainty that this game is worth it for those who actually take the time to appreciate it. Officially, it takes 2 hours to beat it, but that's if you're interested in just getting to the end. If you take your time and appreciate the carefully crafted atmosphere, you're looking at 5-7 hours. Likewise, simply by observing your surroundings you can see a story develop with just enough detail to let you come up with theories to share with your friends. This game is meant to be a living, breathing Beksinski/Giger painting. And it lives up to that ambition. Combat isn't bad so long as you understand that it's often times a last resort as both health and ammunition are scarce, making every encounter tense. Between the tense combat, body horror, and the existential implications of the story, this game manages to be a horror game that doesn't rely on jump scares or spooks of any kind. An impressive feat compared to many modern indie horror games.

If I had to describe Scorn and compare it to other horror shooter-like games, I'd put it like this. Imagine you're into really spicy food (you eat Carolina Reapers for breakfast. That spicy.) going into a supermarket, to buy a bag of spicy chips. Sure, the bag you get looks promising. The amount you get for the money is ok. They smell promising. The crunch is nice. The base flavour is ok. And then you take a bite and notice, the spicyness you were promised is next to not noticeable at all. The next time you decide to get your chips at that weird and expensive organic shop. Cause, you know, why not. You pay a fuckload of cash for something that really doesn't look like much. The chips look weird. Almost deformed. The size and shape of every chip varies. But then you take a bite and, HOLY COW IS THAT SPICY. SWEET JESUS! Then you notice that everything else around that spice is just ok. But fuck it. You've already decided to get them again. Scorn is a very niche game. It doesn't offer big, spine chilling scares. It doesn't offer bombastic action scenes. It doesn't tell a life changing story. Scorn is an art exhibition, with monsters and puzzles. And for that it will be remembered by those who've played it.

Lore is in the game, it's just explained in plain text on the artbook, instead of just environmental storytelling like in the game, it just takes some to figure out as it's not always obvious at first glance

*There may or may not be major spoilers ahead, you've been warned.* *Just a small review from my point of view* Been trying this game, mostly because it looked so surreal and alien but i gotta' admit.. This game's not nearly as good as the hype made it look like. While it certainly looks amazing, most at the time, it just doesn't feel as good. Sometimes not even - like - at all. Then, the most heartbreaking thing of all, there is literally no story. Like none, nada. I could get over the sluggish, slow, forced-feeling combat.. But the story? ... And the last thing on the list is the playtime. 8 Years of developing a game for just over 5 hours? :( But with a pricetag of close to tripple A with 50 Bucks?? _Uhm, no!_ Of course, as mentioned already, the atmosphere and the sound really has something unique, something alienated. Everything looks so.. Surreal, gloomy.. Dark, which i really like, given i consider myself a fan of Howard .P's works.. But this just wasn't enough to make so much wrong right. At least for me it wasn't. All things considered, this game isn't _bad_ tho. It just isn't as good as most of us were hopin'. If you are a hardcore fan of H.P's works and games inspired by his works, you should check it out. For everyone else i'd advice to wait for a sale, 50 Bucks is just too much to ask for this, seriously.

The beginning is an average stoner realizing he's out of weed. But fr what exactly *is* the main character you play as? Is he like some sort of nearly-extinct species of a biological takeover or something? Like some kind of survivor after aliens come around similar to the way it is in all-tomorrows with the Qu and whatnot?
