Mark , thank you for this video. I have been shooting Sony for 3 1/2yrs now and you are the first person to give a clear, practical and concise explanation of each of the AF settings. I have been frustrated with the erratic behavior of Sony continuous AF and the amount of times critical focus is not achieved. I was sure it was operator error and not the camera but I couldn’t find a clear guide on how to identify and correct my mistakes. I’m sure I will have to go over your video a number of times but I’m very much looking forward to shooting with this new knowledge. One piece of constructive feedback I would like to share is that it seems common place that tutorials are based around well lit scenarios. I as do many, shoot a lot in low light and as such, I would like some tips on focusing and DOF I’m very low light situations.

Viewing this a second (maybe third) time (Jan 2024) after purchasing my new a6700. The new a6700 manual states; "...When the F-value is greater than F22 in [Continuous Shooting: Hi+], [Continuous Shooting: Hi] or [Continuous Shooting: Mid] mode, the focus is locked to the setting in the first shot." Thanks again Mark for your excellent SONY-product resources. What you do really makes a difference! I first used your ebooks with my NEX-6, then a6400, and now with my a6700.

Earlier restriction on Aperture and Focus when using Continuous Shooting have steadily been improving, first to F11 and F16 and now to F22 with the very latest cameras.

You are a wonderful teacher. I live in Banff in the Rocky mountains. One huge issue I have is Sony auto focus being obsessed with spruce and other coniferous trees. Today I was trying to shoot an ospray in flight with tracking focus from a small spot. There was a mountain covered with spruce trees behind it. Even though it was halfway between me and the mountain. There was no way to get the camera to come back and focus on the bird. If it so it appeared over the mountain thr focus worked great. I've had a lot of cases in bird photography where the camera chooses to focus on conifers behind the bird. It's the same with my a6400, a7iii and whichever lens I use. Maybe since you wear the brand you could pass this to R&D. I'm sure pine tree photographers think Sony auto focus is the best technology ever but it's the only point of frustration for me.
@AlphaCreativeSkills4 жыл бұрын
Small spots are my last go-to AF area that I would want to choose, but have to be used when there are foreground obstacles. AF tracking technologies massively improved in 2019 - especially on the full frame cameras such as the A9, A9II and A7RIV. I could pretty much guarantee these cameras would show no love for the pine trees in the background so for Sony engineers it is probably job accomplished.
@footsy4204 жыл бұрын
@@AlphaCreativeSkills good, I noticed the tracking is quite a bit better on the a6400 than the a7iii it's the one I use for wildlife. I sure appreciate your quick responses even to an older video. The real problem was that once it focused on the mountain behind if I would try to get the bird it would not hunt. It probably checked if there was something already in focus.... Do you know what a really cool video would be is an interview with Sony engineers. Maybe they have too many secrets to be interviewed but I would love to know more about how the software works.
@AlphaCreativeSkills4 жыл бұрын
It would be great to get the engineers on camera but it took me a year to organise my only meeting with them and they don’t speak good English. I have a very good understanding of how to achieve a 95% success rate with the A9 cameras and the few times I do miss I now put down to my ageing response times to sudden changes in subject behaviour.

As an academic (non-photography) I appreciate the information you provide here to take better pictures using the sophisticated Sony operating system; one of the reasons I bought an Alpha 7 iii and RX100. I'm still in the transition phase like many others from Canon to Sony and appreciate the advice you provide so I am more proficient when I am confronted with switching between stills and movies, sport and landscape modes. I really like the customisation that is part of the mirrorless systems as it can be over-powering when you are working to the best of photographic opportunities.

Last question, I promise!! At 46:10 you show your recall custom hold setting for DMF and you've checked WIDE for your focus mode. Since you might be doing an off-center composition why do you pick wide instead of flexible spot or even not picking a focus area for the button? Many thanks and sorry for so many questions but you are an amazing resource!
@AlphaCreativeSkills6 жыл бұрын
If you are holding down the AEL button you can’t also move a flexible spot with the multi Selector (only one thumb). Wide is mostly your friend as 90% of subjects are picked up by the wide algorithm - face detect will also kick in when using DMF.

Great Video Mark. I am an ocean photographer and use a water housing to shoot waves. The wave is coming at me most of the time. Would lock on flexible spot lock on to a wave? like you said in the video. Lots of my photos focus on front and center a lot.
@AlphaCreativeSkills4 жыл бұрын
I think because of the changing nature of a wave you would have mixed success, e.g., if the camera locked onto the white foam and the the foam disappeared the focus would immediately jump to another subject. I am usually locked onto a subject in the waves and not the waves themselves so you will have to explore this feature to see if it has any value in your own workflows.
