You are the fifth online dog trainer I have followed. I am getting a working cocker spaniel puppy in April and want to get ahead. Some trainers I have found too harsh, others too excitable but you are the Goldie Locks trainer - just right. Thank you for a calm, common sense, kind and practical way.

I am liking your clips I have had a cocker spaniel for 14 years she sadly passed away. I am getting a Cockerpoo ( Girl Black ) and following your clips as you are the first UK person I have found on here I am not a lover of Americans and their training but I am going to watch all yours. THanks

We are due to get our 8 week year old female cockapoo in just under two weeks. Is it better to wait until 2nd immunisations until you start the outdoor toilet training? I have just read so much on not letting them out until they had these. You have a very calm approach to training which is great!
@AlphaDogBehaviour2 жыл бұрын
Get them out from day 1 as you see in the video. Keeping a dog away from all that it needs to accept and learn outside from 8 weeks can be damning for their social skills. A clean area in the garden should help. Thanks and good luck.

Hi Nick, can I ask how does Ruby let you know she needs to go to toilet when she is inside the house? Do you hang training bells by the door and taught her to use it? Thank you very much. Just subscribed to your podcast. Looking forward to your new episodes.
@AlphaDogBehaviour3 жыл бұрын
She goes to the door and looks at us 😂 No bells, I think she’d end up playing a tune on them if given the opportunity. Also, with bells, I’ve seen some dogs that just keep bashing them and want to go out all the time but not to toilet, more to mess around. Thanks!

Is a lead only good for those that are already well trained to pee outside? I mean imagine trying to put a lead on a dog that has just peed inside and you need to get her/him outside quick. Also, do you think the influence of a good breeder helps with early habits and training?
@AlphaDogBehaviour3 ай бұрын
Good breeders are critical yes, Ruby’s breeder was great help with some early toilet training and early social experiences in the home. If you channel the dog into toileting this way each and every time, it will very quickly become the norm and you’d be surprised how well you can manage a pup and toilet training issues from early days - assuming you collect at 8 weeks of age. Time and vigilance are key aspects. So use the lead and that will condition your pup in a few days. Good luck!

2 questions - 1st of all we don't mind if our dog wee's on the grass but would like him to poo in a specific area on the patio, am I expecting too much or should I just promote all toileting on the patio. 2nd - during the night the puppy is going to be in our bedroom, should we set an alarm to wake us every hour or shall we rely on puppy waking us if he needs the toilet?
@AlphaDogBehaviour4 жыл бұрын
Try your best to keep it in one space/area, but your dog may not entirely agree depending on the surface etc.

Hi. I have a 12 week old puppy. I’m taking him out to toilet at all the recommended times - after food, playtime, waking up from a nap etc, but he doesn’t always wee when we go out. We can be outside for 10-15mins and still nothing. And occasionally he will then wee almost as soon as we’ve come back in. It’s really hard to predict when he actually needs to go outside too, he has no clear signs inside the house - he doesn’t sit by the back door, or whine, he sniffs at literally everything so it’s really hard to know if he’s sniffing to wee or for crumbs or “just because”. I’ve just recently started trying on the lead like you suggested as I wasn’t before, so hoping this might help? Otherwise do you have any suggestions on how to manage times where he really shows no interesting in weeing when I taking him out? Many thanks.
@AlphaDogBehaviour3 жыл бұрын
Maybe start by taking him outside on the lead every 30/60 mins a d have a treat with you ready to reward the action there. Also, try placing his pee and pop outside in the desired location and he should sniff and recognise that as his and a place to go. It’s important to close down opportunities to go inside, so watch like a hawk and if you can’t watch place inside the crate for sensible periods. Thanks.

Hi! Can I ask what your recommendations are for a puppy who isn't vaccinated? We have a fox who visits the garden during the night so I'm concerned about taking her outside but don't want to build a habit of toileting indoors. Thanks

I would discuss this with your vet, as they will have a better understanding of your situation. Thanks! 🦊 🐶

If you mean a bath, I’d give it a few days to allow to settle in and then build up from there. Good luck!

bath of course, one question everyone advises against taking a puppy before vaccination or contact with other dogs?

There is still a lot you can do without allowing unfettered access.

Hello, I’ve watched all of your videos on training up a young puppy. We’ve got a 9 week old toy cockapoo and we’re trying to get him to go to the toilet on the patio and not on the grass but he keep crying outside and when we bring him in he goes to a certain place in the house and goes there practically right away. Could you please give us any advice on what to do to cure this? Thanks!
@AlphaDogBehaviour4 жыл бұрын
The grass is okay if that suits you, what surface did he have as a pup with the breeder? Maybe replicate that and then transition to the outside. Stick with it. It will come to together.

How long do you need to be taking her out every 30-60 min for the toilet? The first week? Or longer?
@AlphaDogBehaviour4 жыл бұрын
Possibly every 30 mins to start and then it should gradually extend in keeping with the dog's ability to hold on.
