@sarowie3 жыл бұрын
the problem with authentication is, that you will never be 100% certain if you have the real deal and you sometimes will label a card suspect, as it varies from all references you have, but it might be genuine from a print run you never seen. On the other hand, there a businesses acting as authenticates, that complain about how hard their business is - very funny: If you can not do the one thing you claiming, do not enter the market. So... the very best people for the business avoid the business as they know their own limits.

Here is something to investigate and a Warning to North American Buyers - i hope Rudy sees it: Beckett grades German cards from the "Renaissance" Set as "1994 Antiquities". Just check Ebay for "Antiquities German". Currently someone sells for example a Beckett graded Mishra's Factory from the German Renaissance Set (Black border and Set Symbol) for 499 USD, which are worth about 3-4 Euros in M/NM condition. Beckett not knowing about Renaissance as a Set seems unlikely considering their Expertise of Magic The Gathering. So Beckett claiming german Renaissance Set cards which are not worth much are "1994 Antiquities" is very misleading. The Sellers don't point that out either, they of course abuse the Fact that their Renaissance Card was classified "Antiquities" by Beckett. Would love to .see Rudy look into this

I started playing magic in 7th Edition and it gave me a group to belong to all through middle and high school. Even played at work now and then. That stopped, though and for years my cards just sat there doing nothing. Recently, my brother in law got back into it and began to teach my nephew the game as well. Thing is, he is all about the value of cards, what they're worth in terms of money he can get later on. I see cards in terms of value within the game. So suddenly having someone that close that I can play a game I loved with, but who only sees it in terms of gambled investment... It's a little soul killing.

@@B.V.Luminous I see it a bit differently, if he was "just after the value" he wouldnt play the game and teach it to your nephew. He shares the fun of playing that that you have. if they had no game value to him he wouldnt play. Yeah your old cards have sentimental value and thats why they have so much more value to you, but he has no sentimental connection to it. Just imagine if you had known like you had a card back then you didnt need for example because it wasnt in your colors or stuff and you knew you could get money for it wouldnt you have done it? I started playing last year and our group drafts a lot, great fun, but I sell almost all cards that are worth something almost immediatly, because I dont need them, they would gather dust in my place and maybe even get damaged. So I sell them, someone who needs them can buy them and treassure or play them, so the cards have a use again and I can use the money to play another event with my group (for example someone recently bought my cultivator collos, she needed it for her commander deck, so she was happy she found the card and I had a bit more money which I then spent on a booster box that I opend with my group (we enjoy opening boosters together). And the cards I dont need and are not worth, I give them to the two ppl in our group that love collecting and they are happy about them. For me thats the soul of the game, giving the cards a kinda purpose beyond laying in my binders. I also have a few cards I treassure that I like or have some story behind them. Like for example that sorin my playgroup gifted me. I would never sell him, but I understand everyone who would. While counterfeit money is an entirely different beast than MtG cards, there's some similarities that can be spotted if you've seen the ways people counterfeit playing cards. The corner not being cut right or the thickness of the card are some examples that could apply to dollar bills. Getting 20s, 50s, and 100s from the bank shouldn't concern you. But if I get a $100 bill as part of a large exchange you bet your balls I'm handing it back if I don't feel like the weight, size, or font doesn't feel right.

Rudy, if i can make couple suggestions from the perspective of a printing press operator. Get a digital caliper "20$". You can measure the thickness "in mm, or decimal inches, or pts" of legit cards and use it as another point of reference for verification. We use them constantly in the print industry to measure paper thickness to set the gap between plate and blanket "squeeze". Also, get a printers magnifying glass "Printing Loupe" "10$" that way you can actually see the tonal pattern, and individual dots. You will easily have verifiable evidence with these tools. It might be interesting if you were to get a USB magnifying camera and really show the audience the blatant frauds from the legit prints.

Just for fun, when breaking out the tools you ought to throw in a small sledge and torch. :D Once again I can tell the difference by the printing and rosette pattern of the printing. It makes sense because you would need an expensive press and a lot of money and stock to get the same printing method as the real cards. The kind of devices a counterfeiter would use to print are not likely to create any screening pattern.

I think its OBVIOUS that you changed the card when you covered it with the paper towel. NICE TRY COPPERFIELD!!!

God the old cards are so beautiful. They just make me happy to look at. I've only ever owned a Beta Chaos Orb and Alpha Time Vault as far as Alpha/Beta and other expensive cards are concerned, even though I have played since 1995 (I was very young during MTG's beginnings and my cousin who taught me how to play only gave me crappy inexpensive cards to use). It was always a dream of mine to own at least one of the Power, but I know the card would just sit there on a shelf and I could never bring myself to waste its existence on something like that.

feels like he's bating people for clicks. It's either he's 100% certain its a fake, and he should bend it (OR RIP IT IF HE'S SO CERTAIN), or he's not REALLY going to bend it because it's Beckett certified and worth a thousand dollars. He's a stupid youtuber, either do the thing or don't. He's being a coward.

Yes but if he doesn't mark them there will be some idiot in the audience who will accuse him of swapping the cards somewhere through the video. And yes I know he screwed up and concealed the card with a paper towel at some point so if someone wants to accuse him of foul play they can still do it.

nah i trust Beckett, a 40 year old card grading system over some youtuber who keeps saying it's thick. He keeps saying he wishing he could bend it or rip it but if he was 100% sure it was a fake then he'd just do it. Rudy you may want to get a digital caliper for examples like this in the future to more easily show the thickness difference in videos. You can get them cheaply ($10-20) at Harbor Freight Tool stores. Just a thought.
@liffei4205 жыл бұрын
Ruby you should drop by harbor freight and get a digital caliper, you can measure the card thickness down to 0.001 inches or 0.03 mm only $18 I would assume a rebacked card would be thicker

@supreemmdb25 жыл бұрын
@@mrknarf4438 lol... Considering I know nothing about MTG besides what was known (back in the early 90's) that the BL was the one spoken about the most... and also know very little beyond the Alpha set, I easily get excited when seeing it. All the others, even though valuable, they don't really hold much sentimental value to me. I can still remember the days of opening up a single pack of cards from a game that many didn't even know about yet (from a small town), and seeing that BL... holds a memory.
@mrknarf44385 жыл бұрын
Techmite Of course, but that's a Collectors Edition Black Lotus, meaning it has square corners, isn't tournament legal and is worth around $1k. Each of those Beta Moxen is worth around four times as much, and they are playable cards, they're way easier to sell and harder to find in good conditions. Had it been a playable Lotus, even from Unlimited (the third and least expensive printing) I would have shared your enthusiasm, but CE cards are kind of only good for collectors.
@TooLatePeople3 жыл бұрын
Judging how easy that was opened I would assume that card was NEVER ever sent to Beckett for grading. Some real AA Mox Pearl was graded, carefully extracted from the case and then this abomination was repackaged inside. AA grade and cut corner is a nice touch for misleading "oh THAT's what is wrong with this card".
@HereandTheRain2 жыл бұрын
Not possible because if you crack these cases they have a altered look where the plastic separated and was pressed back together. Chances are the guy worked for Becket and "graded" his own card for financial gains. I really didn't think Beckett did anything other than sports.

The weight can be different on a rebacked card. This one is probably heavier if it feels thicker. You need a very precise scale to weigh single cards.
@bragoen5 жыл бұрын
@@TavisKingsChannel Thanks for your reply, yeah I wasn't thinking about your standard kitchen scale but I was wondering if ther was a way to substantiate the "feeling" of being thicker. Maybe sliding it in a stack or cards would have been enough to show it was thicker idk.

@@bragoen I use a scale that measures down to 0.01 grams. Essentially, it can measure 20% of a single drop of water. The scale was 25 dollars. Im certain it could detect a difference in weight if Rudy was able to do so in his hand. It could be interesting for him to show the difference in card stock between sets. The weight of the cards is prolly slightly different.

IDK if you know this, but Beckett is a sports trading card magazine. It's most popular being the baseball card magazine of course. It lists the values of all cards old and current, similar to the Duelist. They are basically the Sports card equivalent to "the Duelist" :P. I feel like you should know this, because they also had a mtg magazine at one point too.
