This was a heart breaking video. Much luck to you Greg and thanks for sharing your story with us all. Good news is people around the world are working tirelessly to find a cure and just 3 months ago researchers in Toronto may have found a breakthrough in treatment for Huntington's disease. Maybe some day in the near future we may see a cure. My hopes are high but like anything it will take time and a lot of trial and error.

Not to be that guy, but your comment is not actually true. First, the disease is inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion (i.e., one copy is sufficient), however, it is only guaranteed if both parents are carriers (this was not specified, so cannot be certain. All the same, if the mother is not a carrier, there is a 50% chance to pass it on to the next generation. Second and final, he only said he tested positive - this is not a death sentence. While the CAG repeats needed to test positive at (what I assume to be) an advanced (non-juvenile) age usually means you will show symptoms, there is no way to know when, how serious or how aggressive the transformation will be. All the same, agree that it is heart-breaking, but just be aware that there is an equal likelihood of his children carrying the gene as not carrying it.
@AlexAyoub_6 жыл бұрын
Oh, I meant that they may not be carriers at all. Importantly, much of the active research in this either tries to capture the mRNA prior to the creation of the protein leading to aggregation or attempts to disrupt the aggregation event entirely.
@AlexAyoub_6 жыл бұрын
Go read about Mendelian genetics and how autosomal dominance works in disease when only one parent is a carrier. You do counseling to avoid both parents having the same genetic disease as that guarantees the passage to their children.
@jancukasu6 жыл бұрын
so bottomline of this discussion is: people with this kind of disease, please stop breeding so you won't contaminate the world by inheriting your unfortunate genes and stop the vicious cycle of unpreventable death?

20:45 I had that moment. I got back into Magic about 10 years ago and broke out a couple of my old play decks from the early 90s in my LGS. Had a bunch of people playing around me and I broke out my deck with my friends and immediately went to do the shuffle like I used to. No idea of the value of the cards and what had become of the game. Cutting the deck, one half in each hand, bending them with my thumbs and the sound of those cards slapping one another as I shuffled them. The sounds that came from the people in that room, I can still remember it. I actually had a person come over to me and ask me to not do that anymore. This part of your video really reminded me of playing back in the day.

My dad got an old collection of bulk i think 8th and 9th edition cards along with a few other sets around the same year and gave it to me. I immediately called my friends to help dig through it to put valuables in binders and then choose which ones to use, we were kids and didnt care about money value only rarity value, if it was a mythic it went in the binder no matter what and only came out when trading or when going into a deck. Im now graduated from highschool and still play mtg with the same friends.

@82camino964 жыл бұрын
Man, that first turn hypnotic... my favorite deck that I ran with until I stopped playing was a black/red discard/destruction deck, with beta dual lands and everything. Even in the early 2000’s when I got back into playing again in college, I for some reason insisted in playing all my vintage cards, raw. I used to buy up beta land so I could fill my decks with them. I beat the hell out of a lot of nice cards but I enjoyed playing them. Still have all my old cards, and decks inside of worn out 3rd edition revised boxes. That image really was 90’s magic decks. I remember the revised boxes were thinner than the newer boxes so I kept all my decks in those vs 4th edition or ice age boxes which were prevalent at the time. The early days of Magic brings me a certain nostalgia that I can’t describe. I started at the tail end of revised but I immediately did everything I could as a young teenager to collect the older cards of the time. So I did pretty well but never got ahold of any true very rare cards. But I have a lot of cool alpha, beta, unlimited, dark, 3rd, legends, antiquities, etc. the latest new cards I ever bought was probably homelands. Then I tuned out of following new sets. For some reason the inspiration that the older sets gave me wasn’t there anymore with what was in production at that point. But I did put together a set of ice age, which was probably the best set that was actually being produced during the time that I actively played and purchased but unfortunately even ice age was probably over produced. I always liked the dark as well but they were hard to find once I realized that I wanted the discontinued stuff. It’s great to see that there is a KZbin community for the dinosaur MTG stuff. I collected baseball and sports cards as a younger boy, always interested in the old stuff, but once I discovered magic, that became my only real collecting interest from them on. That artwork man...

That black deck is a lot like the deck my uncle still plays against me with to this day. He started in 1994-ish when I was a year old. I'm familiar with the t1 hippie. Fun fact: according to him, the folks he played with would actually have "ritual urns" on the table and when a card was hit with a "remove from game" effect they would sometimes tear it in half and burn it in the urn. I don't want to think that anything valuable was lost.

We played up until I turned 16 (2000) and I gave away all my cards to a friend of mine who still has them all. Since then I've been slowly getting a new collection started and I have a fairly decent amount of cards now, but it doesn't compare to the times I had when I was a kid playing against my neighbor and teaching the neighbor kids how to play. This video was awesome and you've got a new sub not only because your vids are entertaining, but nostalgia as well.

Just ran across this by random YT surfing... I used to collect Magic from 1994 to 97. Actually got a rush of nostalgia watching this! I just loved the artwork and card design in general. I never actually played, just collected the cards; there was a game shop 2 mins from my house where I used to buy/trade a ton every week to fill out sets. So, I have like a 2½ foot stack of these things in a box someplace. As a teenager I never had the internet til after I stopped collecting, so very little idea what was rare or worth this or that when I quit, besides the most famous legendary cards everyone knew of back then, which I did have several of. I haven't looked at or thought of Magic in like 20 years at least so the names are mostly escaping me at the moment. Anyway likely wishful thinking and I'm being a moron but if some of these can seriously be worth hundreds or thousands of dollars then I'm going to do some digging...

Sorry guys, nowadays I collect/deal in vintage watches, so between that and my day job I haven't devoted much time to this. Good news: I found a small stack of cards so far, maybe 3" high. All the rest weren't in the box, nor the Magic rule/gameguide book I had (circa 1998 or 99 I think? It was novel sized and the cover was like a card back with big Magic logo; when I thought I might try get into playing but never did) or any of the other random paraphernalia... lol I had like 30 of those little tiny 2" tall rule booklets that used to come with some packs back in the day, some old magic ads and other ephemera from the game shop. Anyway I asked around at work if anyone might be interested and took the small stack to a coworker who offered me $2100 (Canadian dollars mind you) for them. So far I haven't had the time to go through them all to research values, but I've known the man about 6 years and trust him, but I'll verify things first. Likely I'll sell once I do the research, but I do plan to weed out a few whose art I really love, just to keep as keepsakes I guess. The bad news is, I'm missing all the rest of what was about a 2 foot stack, as well as all the other random Magic ephemera I mentioned. I know I didn't throw it out and I'm about 95% sure it didn't get stolen, but it's not in that box. I thought I had it all together, but as I literally haven't touched any of this in decades - other than a "Burnout" card I always used as a bookmark; love that art! - and moved twice since I stopped collecting. So the rest have to be in one of the other many boxes of random old stuff hiding in my basement. I do intend to look and if anyone's interested I'll update when I find them and go through them, but the state of my life with extremely limited free time means don't expect that to be anytime soon. Sorry guys!

I left for vacation to go home and visit family for 10 days, when I returned nearly my entire collection had been ruined. The AC in the unit above us had a leak and water poured down into our room right on the dresser that stored my cards. The only reason I had any cards left is I took some decks with me to play with, but they all contained proxies, my friends all new what I had so I didn't see the need to travel with them. It was devastating and I hope no one ever has to go through it. I hope so much that someone buys that set and they can complete it!!! Good luck!!!

A lot of casual players had these kind of collections. They started to collect something but naturally began with the cheaper stuff, slowly adding a few valuable chase cards whenever they could afford it. This is a very typical collection from somebody who started with revised, just too late to get the beta / unlimited stuff

Great collection! I remember those 4th edition German packs coming in a sealed version of Scrye magazine. To this day I still have the "Paradiesvögel" I pulled from way back in the 90's. They're currently pulling heavy duty work in my Marath EDH deck.

I've watched a few MTG podcasts, but just stumbled onto this one......... that first 5 min you hooked me, buying the collection and keeping it together?! 👍👍....... I had some cards, only worth pennies that I wasn't ever going to get rid of because it was first packs my daughters bought, and they were so excited that it had me hyped..... unfortunately, majority of collection was stolen, those were in it....... I was left with a collection that mirrors this except for the amount of revised he has, and mine extended up to saviors of kamigawa........ now whenever I need money, I sell to my best friend because they go into safe and he's got every card I've ever gifted him, or sold to him for 30-40% of low....... he needs 1 more underground sea to have a complete playset of all duals from revised, and when I sell him the one I have, I told him 250, regardless of where price is, and right now, it's up to almost a grand

Alot of times the cards protect eachother if they are kept stacked together neatly and never really touched.

Poor a pack out for Greg's dad, sorry that this happened to you but thank you for using Rudi to spread awareness and thank you Rudi for being a platform for his voice. You should consider selling this collection for charity and donating it to a fund for researching Huntington's disease. I know the person who sent them to you will not have the luxury to donate the money he got and did the next best thing by making sure they go to some one who appreciates them while getting funds but would be a great to support more research.

Thanks for the nostalgia. I know Greg had to move forward with his life, but if those were my dad's decks, I'd have saved those at the very least. Holding them is like connecting to him. I don't know, but this was super moving and a joy to watch.

I remember first playing magic in the early 90's. Went to my older brothers house and stayed with him and his uni mates. I was given a goblin deck. His mate played sera angels. What a trip this video was!

Legends and Dark were my absolute 2 favorite sets. I did enjoy the stories of Homeland. Antiquities is always overlooked. I literally played duplicates of every one of those decks... Wow right in the feels. RIP Greg's dad.

That was an emotional rollercoaster. Greg, best of luck to you sir, hopefully they will find a cure soon. I started playing MTG in 1994, and this proves to me that back then, everyone played the same decks! I had a goblin deck, a discard deck, a ramp deck, and some others. Very cool nostalgic trip down memory lane, thank you for that. I still have my unlimited sengir vampires (playset), unlimited Serra Angels (half playset), Hypnotic Specters (playset), and one of my favorite black cards Will 'O'the Wisp! I've left and come back to MTG many times over the years, and it's amazing to see where it has gone since the early days. Such an amazing transformative journey. I love this game, and the seemingly endless possibilities afforded by the number and types of cards. Thanks again for the fond memories of when MTG was much simpler, but still as fun as it is today.

Big creatures. I made the green deck, actually. It relied on force of nature, living lands, dragons, wood elves and birds of paradise. He always played the blue creature steal deck against me. I never won. He always took my creatures.
