100% agree. Big Birthday Blowout manages to actually have heartwarming moments, takes all the effort it can to celebrate the show, and is a good love letter to the creator and the fans. Truth or Square on the other hand was mostly a compilation of pointless scenes from episodes that never happened and was a filler episode

A few things: 1. How could you not mention Tom Wilson in the live-action segments? He's only worked on the show since season 2. 2. Don't gloss over the fact they got closing cast for the Spongebob Musical for the credits. They were my favorite cameo. 3. I really like that they finally let Patchy meet SpongeBob. I think that was a really cool touch for longtime fans. Other than that, it was a nice analysis for a more worthy anniversary special.

Seeing Patchy's body at the end was super creepy. Like, they could've just shown Potty dancing, not Patchy's body seizing on a 3D rendered beach in uncanny valley. That scene shook me down to the bone.

Great video Jay! I thought Spongebob’s Big Birthday Blowout had some flaws, but the humor really brought me back to season 1-3. Easily one of the best specials I’ve seen from the show.

I feel like the newer animation is TOO cartoony... like I know it’s a cartoon, but they never had “cartoon physics” to a degree. It’s kind of like the shlapstic was always a 7 or an 8, occasionally a 6, but they’ve turned it up to an 11 with how bendy and stretchy the animation is and it just... It gives me anxiety because I can’t tell what’s coming.

I like it! I thought it was a really fun special, if not the best, for the anniversary with some nice throwbacks and meta moments (eg. the voice actors scene). I think Stephan Hillenburg would probably be proud of the outcome.

While truth or square makes it unclear whether spongebob is "real" or not, other episodes featuring patchy show him sending letters to spongebob such as the episode where spongebob throws a house party. I remembered that they made a joke that patchy didn't think about the effect water would have on letters written in ink.
