I agree with everything Simon states with great exceptions to cutting in line. It implies that one can not control their own impluses and creates a lack of respect for the others who are taking the time to be in line. Don't think that you are the most important person that deserves the bagel before others.
@paularends123212 күн бұрын
Thank you. The only reason you can grab bagels without slowing down the line (maybe) is because everyone else is honoring the line system. If everyone did what you are doing, it would be complete chaos. Everyone in that line thought Simon was a complete jerk and I can only agree. I can't listen to anything else this guy says because I can't believe this made it into his video. Let me rephrase your brilliant insight for you, Simon. "Some people see what they want. Others see what it would take to ethically get what they want and decide whether or not it's worth it." Your approach, apparently, is to say "Screw all those people. I'm just going to get what I want through the most expedient means, and to hell with ethics!" Is this guy a person people listen to for stuff? Okay, I'm done. :)

Very interesting, thank you. I am retired and work part-time at a hospital. I maintain an inventory of medical supplies on the floors. It's a bit of a menial job. Few Dr's and nurses will acknowledge you. After all, anybody can do that job. Who are you. By happenstance, a nurse once asked me what I did before retiring, I told him I was a Mechanical Engineer. It's interesting that he now addresses me as sir. I can now drink my coffee using a porcelain cup. So much for titles. Another story I once read about an entrepreneur in New York City who owned six very successful restaurants. He was asked how he managed to be so successful and what assets helped him be successful. He replied, "Taking care of my customers is not what is important to me. I first take care of my employees, and they take care of the steady customer. That's what drives success. " It's unfortunate that employers are more focused on the bottom line than the employees that will make that happen.

Simon, you are truly wise. Servant leadership is what makes a company the company that you want to work for. Companies to have the management team like this have very little turnover. These are the companies that succeeded in the long run. Unfortunately, some people think cracking the whips or ringing them dry is how you motivate somebody. No that’s how you create an unmotivated average worker. I’m just gonna do what I have to do to collect my paycheck. Caesar’s Palace versus The Four Seasons. I have been blessed to work for companies that took care of their employees and unfortunately, I have endured working for companies that didn’t even know my name yet I sent 70 hours a week there. I didn’t stay long with the latter. I appreciate the effort you make to emphasize the importance of being a decent person at work.

There are many things I like about your presentation: You use real people and businesses (instead of stock) that you commend for doing great just by being themselves❤, or being humble. I also like the music and the soft images. But what I really appreciate is your understanding of the younger generation, and the fact that perhaps, WE ARE RESPONSIBLE: they did not raise themselves up, we did raise them up! And while media has contributed greatly, it is our parenting, our schooling and our societal values that need a serious reflection on where and how we are failing, compared to previous generations which, with many imperfections, generated happier and more resilient young people! While embracing the great things of our age, we need to ask: what can we learn from the past that we are in such a hurry to bury as if didn’t exist?

I should have supported her. And done what I could to help. But I loved her, so deeply.... I didn't want to let her go... I see now that that was selfish. And she deserves better. A partner who would have supported her in any decision... I supported her in ever decision.... but one. Her leaving. I'm so sorry Amelia. I love you. And I want the very best for you. Even if thats not me.

@ommitedommited154 I'm so sorry. That is a tough one. You lost a baby and a partner. I imagine she understands you were in great pain. When we're in pain like that, it's not easy to be our best and highest selves. I wish you all the best. ❤️

I understand the point being made, but if the bagel example were true and literal...I'd be upset with someone cutting in front of me and grabbing the bagel. Yes, it's free, but there is a line for a reason to provide structure and fairness. Lol Be respectful 😂 (yes, I know it was to make a point and not literal...I love the whole message...just saying...haha)

I agree. It wasn't the best example. People were in cue. If there weren't any left to those at the end of the cue, those people wouldn't be thinking nice thoughts about him. LOL

I agree. My mind was stuck on why both sides of the table weren’t occupied with runners. The social rule of one bagel per person (or whatever) doesn’t require a line of servers blocking a throughway.

In the bagel example, I think what the other guy saw was the “time” invested for a free bagel. Time is more important than a bagel

Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes! I live it, breathe it, teach it, and love it! The heart is the center of our bodies and life itself and when satisfied we have endless energy and can inspire others with our own joy. I just stayed up all night doing a passion project that has so little "impact" in a grand scale but will support one human being I don't even know and that makes me so happy I'm wide awake and ready to serve all day again. Life is amazing. I love the next generation too. They know better than to sell their souls. They're not willing to be "sheeple" and they may be struggling with it but they're figuring it out quickly, starting companies of their own, ditching old "status quo" standards, and getting down to what really matters. Sorry for the novel.. big YES to all of this :) Keep rocking the light!

I liked the talk (thank you!), and I agree with almost everything. I can even model the situation where it was OK to cut the line and take a bagel instead of waiting for someone else to serve them without offending others. But what struck me and spoiled the feeling was the Four Season example: while that barista loved his job and did it great (with all the “help” from all the managers”), that barista still had to have a second, similar, job that he didn’t like much. I would venture a guess that he didn’t do it for the love of coffee. I wonder, what could that luxury hotel do differently for their work-loving workers? I wonder…

Agreed it was a poor example. “Just don’t get in the way of other people getting what they want”. Pushing in line literally is that
@jeffmejia355619 күн бұрын
Im certain Sinek could have found a better example. The example he gives about the free bagel debunks his other theories about Finite and Infinite Games. He states,”The rule is…”. Unfortunately, that’s his rule. There are no rules. It’s an Infinite Game. There are individuals who will reach across, disrupting the line, take their time choosing what they want, getting bagels for others in their party, causing people to get angry who have waited in line. The people causing the disruption will say, “This is my rule”. The bagel example is better for how long are you willing to wait or what are you willing to do to get something you want? If the free bagel doesn’t mean that much to you then you simply don’t wait in line.
@parmesanzero767817 күн бұрын
There are two types of people. And the third one who analyzed the cost to benefit and realized they could spend a fraction of their hourly rate to go buy a bagel somewhere else and save them the time by valuing their time at at least what they get paid for that time when they work. All these “there are two types of people” things sound great as a speech but as soon as you think about it at all, you realize it’s just refusing to see the world in new ways.

The younger generation has not had the same freedom as I did as a kid. I was given more by being given less. When you have less its all on you to do for yourself, its all on you to confirm you can get what you want by yourself.

I would not make a long line for a free bagel...the thing is "value". I value my time and the perception of me for waiting in a long line for a small thing with no value for me as a free bagel.
@br897916 күн бұрын
I have heard and experienced different things. I have waited for free bagels only to be told not to waste my precious time and buy one instead, which also makes sense as time is our most valuable asset. I have helped others only to watch them succeed because of it whilst being left behind myself... I guess it all depends on the environment but life isn't always fair and it's not as clear cut as it should be.

Sorry, but it was not Oliver Wendall Holmes who discovered the cause of childbirth fever. It was the Hungarian physician Ignaz Semmelweis...who died alone and in poverty because of his honesty. His memory deserves to be honored!

From what I read, it’s a parallel discovery between Semmelweis’ discovery of the prevention of Puerperal Fever & Holmes’ research on the fever. They both independently identified facts about the fever while working on different contexts and countries. And yes, the one that died in poverty and was harshly criticized was Semmelweis
