So I’m a firefighter paramedic and my addiction to the must haves aren’t limited to just men but everyone. Have CPR and first aid training. It has come in handy off duty. My wife is a nurse and one time we helped a woman having a diabetic emergency. Not only did we help her but we kept everyone around calm until an ambulance arrived. I’ll be honest though: Obviously to each his own, but aside from the sound of the shotgun you may have to actually use the gun. I don’t like using a shotgun because of the collateral damage that could occur from using the gun. If you’re in a dense neighborhood, there could be anybody outside that could get hit from a stray round. That’s why I don’t use a shotgun cause of the spray factor. I love my AR-15, but I’ll never use it for home defense. A 9mm pistol (if you’re good at using it), OR my favorite option is a 9mm rifle platform carbine. Has the accuracy factor of a rifle, but you’ll hit your target and not have to worry about killing anybody else

Hey brother. Not trying to be a dick at all - and you're actually on the right track and being smart with your thought process - but overpenetration (through drywall, sheet metal, etc) is more so about the specific ammunition you're using. A 9mm (pistol, pdw, or carbine) can be as dangerous as a shotgun for close quarters. AR-15s have actually emerged as a fantastic choice for home defense, as you can obtain very light, fast, and fast expanding rounds that do great with preventing overpenetration. In short, pick a light, fast, and very expansive or frangible ammo made specifically for self defense; and of course always be aware of your target and what/who is beyond it. Godspeed!

Don’t wanna be an asshole but the Ar-15 has a better chance of penetrating through the wall then a shotgun (excluding slug shot) also the NRA said that a shotgun is by far the best home defense weapon and most successful in the majority of situations. However I’m going either 45. ACP or 9mm I rather clear rooms with a pistol the a long gun easier to maneuver. Plus I don’t want hearing aids after shooting that shot gun indoors lol.

@@michaelpuccio8799 idk man research has shown that 5.56 has less penetrating power than 12 gauge and even pistol caliber rounds even jhp, especially at close quarters which is what were talking about here. thats just my research ive done throughout the years. i do agree with your point on choosing a pistol over a long arm though, being able to cut corners and clear rooms as fluently as possible is a must. thats just my preference. i think we can all agree that ANY gun is 100% better than no gun at the end of the day though lol

I sure as hell hope that any instructor you've had hasn't told you that racking the shotgun is in anyway a deterrent. It is a myth by every account. What it does do is gives away your possible position in your home. Please do not do this. And if your instructor is telling you this, run, they have no idea what they are doing and that advice could get you killed. Keep it loaded, on safe, and ready. And most important, practice at night. Loading, unloading ect all in pure darkness. Practicing at a 1 dimensional range is fine, but it doesn't prepare you for a fight for your life.
