SpaceX Major Change With Raptor Reusability Shock Blue Origin, Even NASA!
“What goes up must come down.”
The rocket was once a one-shot wonder. They burn up fuel in a few minutes and splash down into terrestrial oceans, having put their payload on the right trajectory. This is wasteful and that is why scientists have dreamt of building reusable launch vehicles.
SpaceX's Starship is a type of rocket designed to turn that dream into reality. And its Raptor engine is a "holy grail" that makes the reuse process more efficient than anything from any other company.
So, in today's episode of Alpha Tech, let's explore how a major change in the reusability of SpaceX's Raptor engine is shocking competitors like Blue Origin and even NASA.
SpaceX Major Change With Raptor Reusability Shock Blue Origin, Even NASA!
The Raptor engine is a beast that has been developed over the past decade. After many iterations, it is currently one of the most impressive rocket engines in the world. Each engine can generate half a million pounds of thrust, equivalent to one of the main engines on NASA’s retired Space Shuttle or the Space Launch System rocket.
SpaceX Major Change With Raptor Reusability Shock Blue Origin, Even NASA!
Not only powerful, but SpaceX’s Raptor engine is also unique with its remarkable reusability. As Elon Musk has stated, each engine needs to be capable of flying up to 1,000 times to support the ambitious operations of Starship. Indeed, this is a huge challenge, as no engine in the world has achieved this. The most reused engine in space exploration history is the main engine on each Space Shuttle, each of which only flew a dozen times.

I can't help notice that your "mrthane liquid" is (dyed) red. Does that make it untaxed "agricultural" methane? Also, a nit: The fuel and oxidizer do noit enter the combustion chamber as "gasses" - they are in fact "supercritical fluids."

Nice video. Would have preferred that you stuck with the engine schematic and used moveable pointing arrows to parallel with the discussion. The showing of a rocket engine exterior while talking about its interior was counter productive. Also; you didn't disclose enough about de-coking for refurbishment, for that statement about how difficult it is to do, to be credible. How is de-coking currently accomplished? Can that be improved upon? --- ---A Rocket Engine is basically the fuel pumps and the combustion chamber. What alternative fuel pumps exist. Would a hydraulic syringe work as a pump for several cmbustion chambers saving weight and complexity?

What engine does Falcon use?
@Rwagnersrhsorg
@Rwagnersrhsorg 23 күн бұрын
From ChatGPT4o The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket uses Merlin engines for both its first and second stages. First Stage Merlin 1D Engines: The first stage of the Falcon 9 is powered by nine Merlin 1D engines. These engines burn RP-1 (a refined form of kerosene) and liquid oxygen (LOX) as propellants. Thrust: Each Merlin 1D engine produces a sea-level thrust of approximately 845 kN (190,000 lbf). When combined, the nine engines generate a total thrust of about 7,607 kN (1.7 million lbf) at sea level. Second Stage Merlin Vacuum Engine (Merlin 1D Vacuum): The second stage is powered by a single Merlin Vacuum engine, which is an optimized version of the Merlin 1D designed for operation in the vacuum of space. Thrust: The Merlin Vacuum engine produces a thrust of about 981 kN (220,000 lbf) in vacuum. Key Features Reusability: One of the standout features of the Merlin engines and the Falcon 9 rocket is their reusability. SpaceX has successfully landed and reused the first stage of the Falcon 9 multiple times, significantly reducing the cost of access to space. Efficiency: The engines are known for their high efficiency and reliability, contributing to the Falcon 9's success in both commercial and government missions. References SpaceX - Falcon 9 Overview NASA - SpaceX Falcon 9 Wikipedia - SpaceX Merlin These sources provide more detailed technical specifications and information about the Falcon 9 and its Merlin engines.

@@Rwagnersrhsorg Firstly, if you think that quoting AI as your source gives it any more credibility, you are way wrong. AI is just a megaphone for globalist propaganda. Secondly, it was a rhetorical question, as in why doesn't Falcon use raptors?

I think the 1000 re-use engine is do able, might take awhile to get there, and maybe another design shift to use ceramic liners in combustion chambers, Basically like "Sleeved" automotive engines. I dont think advancements will stop any time soon. I do suspect that cryro fuel engines will be limited to gravity well situations that have adequate infrastructure. And that going outward in the Solar system will morph into other drive systems. Probably most ubiquitous will be based on water from ice, because its available. I think for in system use things will get simpler farther out and away from tech centers, and that interstellar will be the realm of exotics. For now theres a problem with numbers of ships and launches, to make even a Lunar Colony feasible, Need to get to dozens of launches per day even for a minimalistic colony the size of a US Military Base. Translation: if you dont want The Chinese to own the Moon, its gonna take a very serious effort. And the application of other technologies like Super guns, and Space Elevators. Basically over the next few years, humans get to decide if we let Idiots continue to run things and we nuke each other? Or if we break the Paradigm by using military budgets for predominately Space expansion. It is the ultimate high ground. And any leadership that nay says getting to it, needs a lateral promotion to a broom closet in the basement of the Pentagon, and then retired at first opportunity. Methinks the current situation could lead to a renaissance in actual leadership, and the elimination of most bureaucracy and other unnecessary government... Government needs parts count logic applied. I suspect we will soon desire to replace Ahole Judges and Boring Bureaucrats with AI automation. And the Political Buffoons with direct democracies, with a rural versus urban limited government replublic. Cities need to be limited, have heard rumor even Jefferson thought that. and we need to open up the million square miles of Federal lands in the US to settlement, using Condenser tech now available. So we can start a ramp up of human population for expansion into space. Get the government out of bedrooms, quit trashing Dads. Make having kids supported by society, instead of supporting parasites. Make sure there are Dads in homes or else. Also develope weather control from space, so we can green up deserts, and warm up cold places. Which would allow way more people to live decent lives, and get people out of cities of stacked Rat boxes. I remember an example given in the 70's, that you could fit the entire population of the planet standing in Harney County Oregon, and have room to park a car beside every one of them.... Basically we dont have a population problem, we have a management problem.
