Just started doing the second template and already had to tweak because I stupidly set my weights too high. For reference, I'm coming off a powerlifting meet and I've spent the last 8 weeks or so training with high specificity and basically zero conditioning. I'm already in love. I'm less sore the next day than expected due to more blood flow, I'm breathing more smoothly and deeply, I'm challenging myself in a radically different way that will likely pay off in the long run, and my gym time has been reduced. Thanks for the help, Brian, and I'll post again in about 8 weeks with some more reporting.

Hi Brian awesome channel thank you for putting out such awesome content ! I really am interested in trying a program like this seeing as I need to burn some fat but don't want to get weaker. I had a quick question though. Would it be ok to include the olympic lifts in these templates? I was thinking power snatch before the squat and power clean before the deadlift on those respective days. What are your thoughts on this? Thank you ! keep up the good content you are a beast!

Brian great advice! One question though; for explosive power you recommend some form of jumping exercise like a box jump. My knees are kind of wrecked for hard impact work, what might you recommend to still get explosive work in? I was thinking maybe power cleans (ala Rippetoe)? Any other explosive type work?

@Biggelz067 жыл бұрын
Antagonistic groups to deadlift, cut it in multiple parts and analyze it. First part is a leg press then a rack pull antagonistic movement for: rack pull will be a standing cable sraight bar crunch for leg pres will be knee raise mix everything then the mouvement look like... put some resistant bands on your feet then take the dips position on a straight barbbell in the squat rack , do a knee raise (without touching the bar, you should look like a fetus or starting deadlift position) basically it's a knee raise on a straight bar :)

Hi Brian, Thanks for the awesome content you are providing. I'm in my final cutting phase right now. After 4 week I'm finished. After the cutting phase I'm going to build as much as possible muscle by following your 4 day split. There is only one thing I don't really understand. I assume that you eat a shit load of food to grow/maintain your current physique and your still very lean? Is that just because of the high intensity of the giant sets? Just curious, why do you go for such low frequency for each muscle group/lift. It seems like most people need to train bench or squat more than once a week to progress on them.
@BlueCollarCombat947 жыл бұрын
David Van Legendary my guess is because he's a strongman he's not so much worried about his bench as he is developing upper back and tricep strength so thats where most of his focus goes and so you see alot of pulling and over head push vs alot of bench and for the squat hes also doing strongman movements that he has to train which doesn't do actual squats in competition that often so his training is tailored towards driving up his strongman events and training squats multiple times a week would probably be pretty taxing on all the other stuff he does. Thats my guess man. Hope it helps. Have a great day
@TheSivac7 жыл бұрын
I hope Brian replies here, but I wonder if Brandon Jones is right, because Brian gave us free Linear Progression workout where he still used low frequency (1 main lift 1 day once a week) and there were any strongman excercises, nor did he specify that low frequency is here because of the strongman training he does.
@perturbo7 жыл бұрын
@Brandon Jones yeah I get that back and overhead work is way more important for strongman but even then, why hit it all in one day as a natural lifter (especially in the early years of training where you the weight you work with on says squats, DL, OHP just isn't going to require a full week of recovery from). Instead of say, splitting up the volume across 2 days and getting more work in with that main lift. Again no hate, just wondering. Brian's vids have helped me immensely with my lifting.
@BlueCollarCombat947 жыл бұрын
David Van Legendary i see where your coming from but i think his thinking is he hits upper back multiple times a week but when he dead lifts he hits a few movements that compliment the squat and vice versa so hes getting volume 2 days a week on assistance hes just not hitting the main movement twice a week per se but at the same time hes moving weights that are heavy enough that he needs more recovery. I think some people just tend to do better with a ton of volume and some respond better to less. hes mentioned a few times his body really took off with low reps so he may just respond to less volume. I see coaches that recommend both. just takes some experimentation on what works for yourself. and i love his videos and have learned a ton from them as well. hes as awesome coach
@joshjohnston73887 жыл бұрын
I've seen him (and myself perform) three tiers of giant sets per workout. that's a TON of volume. yeah, some people are gonna need more frequency but i bet this works for most people.
@Captainjack0107 жыл бұрын
Hi Brian, would this type of conditioning also work for us boxers / kickboxers? Love to follow your UB / LB splits in between those trainings. However, I wish to address conditioning more instead of just PR'ing on the big lifts - as that is not that helpful for fighting. Any tips are welcome, Thanks!!
@krakonoskraken87637 жыл бұрын
yeah of course...its probably the best type of trainig for fighters - compound movements, giant sets and alot of conditioning...of course you can adjust conditioning for yourself (punching bag, shadow boxing etc.)...maybe you should really focus on explosiveness...and in my opinion strongman movements are great for fighting too - you have strong core, grip etc...everything will help

I've recently started doing giant sets for all my lifts and while I haven't found too much of a strength drop on my upper body lifts where I'm doing antagonistic lifts in the giant set, I have found that for squats and deadlifts doing an explosive movement and abs in the giant set really effects the weight I can hit. How long do you think it will take for my conditioning to catch up? I'm used to resting 4-5 mins between sets of squats and deads so these giant sets are really winding me (in a good way)!
@loved012one7 жыл бұрын
Andrew Lipnick @15:05 Brian says 1-2 weeks. Hope this helps!
@andrewlipnick81317 жыл бұрын
loved012one yeah I heard that. I've been doing giant sets for about 3 weeks now and I'm still having trouble for the lower body lifts. I understand his point about antagonist muscle groups not hindering each other, but explosive lower body movements aren't antagonist to squats and deadlifts so they just seem to make them more difficult.
@joshjohnston73887 жыл бұрын
Andrew Lipnick it took me about a month before i caught up but now i tend to underestimate what i can hit on the strength portion. that's fine though. I'm getting more out of training somewhat sub-maximally. maybe i always went too heavy, i dunno. i'm still learning.

Hey brian, what types of rep schemes do you use on your secondary giant sets, and assistance work? is it always 4x10 or do you cycle rep ranges like you do for that primary giant set?
@BrianAlsruheOfficial7 жыл бұрын
i definitely cycle them to coincide with what my main strength work was for that day

hay Brian, iv started doing weighted dips for the antagonist movement for deadlifts, it is a vertical push that hits the muscles deads don't hit - what do you think?
@JorgeGonzalez-sx7fk7 жыл бұрын
Harry Chamas thats not an antagonistic movement pattern

I didn't think it was such a dumb idea, Brian said that there is no true antagonist movement. and dips stuck with the push pull concept he uses with bench and OHP - he has said before he does this to prevent shoulder injury/imbalance and I think dips would provide some balance to the stress on the shoulder from deads.

There is no stress on the shoulders from deads (to worry about). You should do something to warm up your hips before you dead, like hinge, or maybe kettlebell swing

Harry Chamas i prefer weighted dips in the volume portion of ohp day. makes more sense too me. on deads day, my lower back and hips need the work so those slots are all full. but hey man, you do what works for you.

Hey Brian, how many rounds per giant set would you recommend? I considered myself an advanced lifter and wanted to know how much volume to do with this program.
