If I’m not mistaken, the “Holiday case” was made for Smith-Corona by Samsonite.

Great deal you’re offering. At a shop here in NYC the price would be 900 and up. Love the color. Reminds me of my Webster XL-747.

Thank you for this. I just bought this typewriter in a case at an estate sale. I know nothing about cleaning them, but I want it to look like yours! The Tab key on mine is also frozen. Should be an interesting project!

they aren’t getting any cheaper! there hasn’t been a decent typewriter made for thirty years or so, and never will be again. save up your dollars, my friend - a fine refurbished machine like this one will last at least twenty times longer than your phone(i mean, it’s ALREADY sixty five years old & going better than when it was new)

hey man, that’s why they pay me the BIG bucks ;) seriously though, if you want to get into it, a great place to start educating yourself about typewriter restoration is on Richard Polt’s excellent website typewriterrevolution.com/ as there is a goldmine of information & links there, and that’s not to mention his book! Dig deep, friend - restoring your own machine is one of the most rewarding things a writer can do, and you CAN do it ❤️

How did you clean the surface of the Smith Corona without removing the crinkles? I have a parts Alpine blue that I'm experimenting with and nothing so far has really extracted the dirt except when you rub the paint off. What's the secret in removing the grime without using concentrated chemicals like simple green so that you can keep the crinkles. thx
@TypewriterJustice
@TypewriterJustice 2 жыл бұрын
on this one i used diluted Simple Green, and a ‘super soft’ Source toothbrush - the tiny bristles get into the swirls of the paint without damaging it

Such a great looking machine, a WONDERFUL JOB! A question if you will. When you took it down as far as you did, did you do anything about the cork rebound pad? I have been trying to find information on this and how to deal with it, but so far nothing except repositioning it. Your post are wonderfully educational, than you for sharing what you to share.

unless it’s been damaged by misguided ‘servicing’ it generally doesn’t require any attention, and that’s fortunate considering how insanely difficult it is to access - it requires a significant degree of teardown, far beyond what is required for a typical Clean/Lube/Adjust servicing. Unless the machine in question is historically or emotionally significant, i wouldn’t even consider attempting it unless the machine was already getting a 100% teardown for some reason

I don’t know what it’s called but the outer casing behind the platen on my machine-the piece with the paper support and the spacing numbers on it-keeps coming off and hanging. I don’t know what to do to fix it at all.
@TypewriterJustice
@TypewriterJustice Жыл бұрын
do you mean very the back panel w the antennas built in, or the smooth bit just inside that which sits directly behind the paper while typing? if it’s the former, there are two small, grumpy, and fragile leaf-springs(one at each end) both of whom live for the opportunity to ruin your chosen repair technicians day, and you should immediately go ruin his day by asking him to replace them for you; if it’s the latter, there are two big screws & one little screw who in their hubris have all decided to screw off & TRY to ruin your technicians day, but the joke’s on them because they’re easily replaced by any well-stocked technician. note the central theme here is ‘technician’ ;) there is a list of repair shops at site.xavier.edu/polt/typewriters/tw-repair.html
@rashams1605
@rashams1605 Жыл бұрын
@@TypewriterJustice its the actual outer body--so the back panel with the antennas built in???? It runs along the entire platen. Like i said it is the piece that has the page spacing numbers on it, if removed it would be like taking the bumper off.

Hey man fantastic video! I found a silent super at my town's dump and I've disassembled the entire thing to clean it (I wish I saw that video you made about getting stuck screws loose before I started haha). I wanted to ask you how you got your case looking so clean. I used an entire bottle of goo off and finally got all the felt off the inside but it's still got black streaks from the adhesive. The outside of the case is clean but has several big paint chips. I know you've got to keep your tricks of the trade a secret, but I'd really appreciate any advice you could throw my way.

the best way to have a squeaky clean case is to start with one which hasn’t ever been dirty, but failing that it’s mostly a matter of using a hefty helping of common sense. I clean them up with a few stiff brushes & rags along with a situationally dependent combination of Simple Green APC, Purple Power Degreaser, ConCrobium Mold Control, Scrubbng Bubbles, or plain old Dawn. For things like typewriter cases, generally i find that elbow grease is the most important ingredient. Every case is different, so i’m pretty curious to see exactly what you’re talking about - please send a few pics to typewriterjustice@gmail.com !!!

I'm considering buying one in this color. I notice many for sale that have a greenish tint. How did you go about restoring that brilliant blue color. If it is something that I can do I will buy right away. I just hate the idea of it being permanently greenish
