This episode was the first time David Ogden Stiers and James Stephens worked together in a scene. Stephens would appear in an episode of M*A*S*H next season as a heavily injured pianist, and he shares an iconic scene with Stiers.

What you may not have known is that the circle goes wider -- first case studied in Kingsfield's class in the 'Paper Chase' was about a failed surgery of the hand. Which, of course, was largely the basis of the M*A*S*H episode.
