I can tell I'm really gonna love this game 🖤 This is a first/blind playthrough of Metal Gear Solid 4, so no spoilers in the comments please 😊 I have filmed a couple of episodes already, so any tips you give now might not be applied until much later in the playthrough (I'm currently in Act 3 as I write this). I've been waiting for this .... few people get to play MGS4 due to them making it ps3 only... im happy you found a way to play it and that we get to enjoy you bringing a conclusion to this tale. MGS4 has SOOOOOO MUCH fan service and call backs it's insane... can't wait to see what you find, see and experience and hearing your thoughts and theories :P also Snake being "Old" and aging fast was already hinted at in MGS1 when you meet Grey Fox again when he jumps in during the Metal Gear with Liquid he says "You look terrible snake you haven't aged well" :P

If you wanna practice CQC (and movement, shooting, etc.), you can use the "virtual range" from the main menu. Also, the "briefing" section in the pause menu (not "mission briefing" in the main menu, but "briefing" when paused) has little tutorials for the controls. Thanks so much for continuing MGS - I found you through Mass Effect, and you're one of the best, most thorough, and most thoughtful let's-players I've ever seen! I really hope you enjoy!

I hate that Otacon tells the player not to engage in battle but if you aid the militia you can help them win fights against the PMCs and reclaim the sector and you can even give items and make friends with the militia. You can join on the celebration after each battle 😂

Kojima wanted to expand on that aspect of the game a lot more. You can find articles about that where Kojima talks about on how you could side with either A or B groups.

When Snake uses his knife to inspect that rifle on the ground, near the dead body of a militian, he's actually inspecting the weapon to make sure it was not mined. In urban warfare scenarios it's pretty common to find bodies and objects mined. I'll leave to your imagination why.

I know you pre record these videos and you may be further along but just wanted to say you can also change your camo to the floor by holding X to go prone and staying still for a second, you don’t HAVE to press up against the walls. Most times this is more useful than camo that you get from pressing against walls and if you stay prone and crawl while you’re camo matches the ground you will be much less visible. 11:14 - Whimsy the song being played "Love Theme", is sung in "Hebrew". 28:25 - Those Bi-Pedal machines are called "Gekko" or "Irving". They're fully automated unmanned combat ground vehicles. The cow moo & cicaeda chirping sounds they make, are actually used as a distraction to the enemy. The legs on them are artificial muscle tissue, so that area is very weak when you shoot them causing them to trip. Also the animation where theuly look like they're taking a "dump", that's all the lactid acid built up in their legs & must be excreted. Lastly they're NOT Metal Gears, becauss MGs are "Nuclear Capable" while Gekko's are meant for direct close support fighting. 2:25:25 - It's pronounced "Mosin Nagant (Na-guant), yes it does not come with a suppressor sadly. The MN is an easter-egg weapon of "The End", from MGS3 Snake Eater. It cost 60,000 Drebin Points, NOT 6,000 DP like youve mentioned lol Fun Fact 1: You can shake your controller, when Old Snake has a camo on his OctoSuit to take it off. You can even do it in cutscenes lol Fun Fact 2: You can hold up PMC enemies for ammo and items. If it's a Male soldier, there's a special button prompt that'll knock'em out in a funny way. However if it's a Female Soldier, DON'T DO IT!! Fun Fact 3: You can help out the Militiaman/Rebels, to gain their trust by helping them rid of PMCs troops. However it can only work in certain areas of conditions. Most importantly, be careful not to kill ANY of them. This will automatically make them hostile towards you, making it harder for you to get by. Whimsy I STRONGLY would not reccomend using/attaching lights to your guns. They're pretty useless, and can you spotted from afar if you're not careful. Foregrips on the other hand, are very useful for stability on recoil for your M4 Custom, or SCAR H "Mk.17".

It is not obviously stated during the first chapter but if you help the Militia agaisn't the PMC they will see you as an ally. If you did helped defeating them when the game crash before the underground area, they would have let you walk around their base. It's a nice mechanic that is only available during the first and second chapter of the game so I'll suggest giving it a try if the ''Ps3'' allow you to. It is nice to have friendly NPC in a MGS game for once :) .

The cqc system in mgs4 is really kool. Snake really knows how to handle himself in this game. Hold ups, disarms, nut grabs, all the good stuff. Unfortunately some of his moves are not that easy to pull of. Looking them up is advised. Otherwise you are likely to miss some stuff out.

MGS4 is good, but not as god-tier like the previous ones. My advice is to stop here after completing it. 'Peace Walker' is very bad IMO, and 'Phantom Pain' is fun to play but the story is not; this two games bring nothing important in term of lore or themes. MGS4 is the real ending.

Holy sh*t I just realised that the flowers around the Boss's grave grow so much because Big Boss put them there and perhaps it's suggested that her very life force causes them to grow and flourish into the small field you see there now. This is why i love lets plays and whimsey's in particular because the different attitudes help me appreciate art more. Also the opening tv channels is i think referencing Command and Conquer (1995), which features the same idea of a smorgasboard of channels to give a cross section snapshot of society and culture in the game's world, and the backgroumd throbbing sound effect at 6:56 is in that game as well.

The original plans for the game apparently had the player being able to forge various alliances with different groups and PMCs which would affect how the various groups would treat Snake, but the final version of the game only gives the player the option to help the militia. There is no requirement to do so, of course, but especially in Act 1, it can help the player since the militia will trust Snake and you don't have to sneak through the militia base.

Additionally there is detailed instructions on how to do CQC, interrogations and more (with pictures) in-game in the pause screen under briefing.

Hopefully this makes its way to you Whimsy, you can lie on the ground and move slowly, and enemies can't see you unless they are super close. There are good instructions for proper emulation set up if you're using RPCS3 on their wiki for MGS4, as well as several KZbin videos about how to get it running smoothly. The main issues I've run into have been missing audio during Codec calls, and very minimal crackling/flickering textures. No crashes though.

I played a lot of video games as a kid during the early/mid 2000s and when i played the metal gear solid series, it had me invested in the characters and the unique gameplay gimmicks. Obviously I did not understand any of the military/weapon talk at the time, but I remember when I played Metal Gear Solid 4. By the end of it, I actually cried. No video game actually made me feel such emotions before this. It was the best game I've played--up until Elden Ring haha. Nothing really came close. It made me appreciate the details of other video games afterwards. I can't wait for Master Collection Volume 2 so I can play it again!!

Ok a few things u should know. That statue that u passed, if u step on its platform u’ll blend in with its position and a little something extra. If u do it a few more times something will fall off 😅. For Codec fun: If u keep damaging the MK II Otacon will get pissed the second time u call him. If u go in a trash can Otacon will gross out. If u perform a hold up on a PMC pat him down from the front then as soon as u pat his junk press the triangle button again to squeeze and he’ll pass out. The rebels will be friendly if u aid them or give them rations. U’ll unlock Altair’s outfit if u get 50 knife throat kills and no more than 25‼️. After blending shake the controller while wearing the Octocamo and it’ll change back to its default color. U can do it even during a cutscene as long as it’s not a registered color. In the camouflage menu if u spin Snake around many times and then resume he’ll throw up. When his psyche gauge goes down during a cutscene quickly press the X button repeatedly and it’ll go back up. Might be easier to google some of this it’s been a long time for me.

The main menu scene with the music still gives me chills I'm guessing she's already way ahead but going prone, adjusting camo, then crawling is the safest and stealthiest way to navigate most of the game 😆 You can also gift the militia men items like Rations or Regain to gain their trust and they become friends Mkst of us who played this at launch watched countless gameplay videos before the game came out so we knew this, but of course it would be hard to figure out as a newcomer in 2024. I'd recommend watching a spoiler free beginner's tips video for the game if you want?

This game is a true masterpiece. It's 16 years old and I still consider it the only true "next gen" game to ever exist. It get's a lot of flak for the length of cut scenes, but the story of metal gear is so deep that it more than makes up for it. MGS4 will truly bring you to tears. The ending will blow your mind as it's the official end of the metal gear time line.

One thing that tends to happen when crouch walking is introduced is that players forget how hidden they can be when crawling! The stealth system is really intended to encourage crawling… MGSV will be the same way. Just a note!

Remember to crawl by holding X. Its much more effective than previous games since you'll automatically assume the camo of the ground.

This game uses the pressure sensitivity of the face buttons for cqc, if you hold lightly Snake just holds the enemy, if you press strongly, Snake quickly chokeholds the enemy and stunns them. One of the few games to use that with the PS3 controller. Also, I haven't finished the video while making this comment but floor camo is better than wall camo when moving around, I'd suggest not constantly hugging walls. And crawling helps a lot (I know crouch walking is new in this game but prone crawling has it's uses, lol). Also also, the reason the middle eastern soldiers were hostile to you in the cave is cause they were only neutral in the beginning, but you could've won't their trust if you helped the battle before entering the tunnels.

Finally! Very excited to be on this journey with you, playing my favorite game in the series 🎉 I really wish more people played the MGS series. Such a powerful anti-war, anti-nuclear weapon message. It has such a profound message about the philosophy of choice and free will, about what it means to have a purpose, to find and realize that purpose. It has a message about what it means to be loyal and what is worth your loyalty, and how to truly have honor in a world where so many people are loyal to money, to power, honorable only to those that benefit them. With so many people in the world today struggling to find purpose in society because of what society tells us we should find a purpose in (money, status, materialism, etc) it sends such a beautiful message about how we can take action to dismantle the shackles that bind us in what our purpose is "supposed" to be, or in the context of the game - the purpose that has been chosen for us, so we can let us choose our purpose for ourselves. This series impacted me as a child, played all the games right when they came out. As an adult, I have so much more respect, so much more understanding, and a much more profound relationship with the multitude of philosophical ideas it articulates. People rag on this game for it's long cutscenes, but as far as I can see it's the best form of storytelling. There is a reason why movies are so popular. Storytelling through strick means of gameplay mechanics is boring AF. This series has more character development, character depth and complexity, emotion and heart than virtually any other video game series ever made, and I've played A LOT of series.

Don't know if anyone already told you this, but you can watch the briefing for the opening mission from the main menu, even though the game doesn't tell you about it. It's pretty long and it gives you a lot of info that you wouldn't know otherwise.

I just got to the part where you find the Mk II - fun fact, Metal Gear Mk II is itself a reference to another Kojima game, Snatchers on the Mega CD (or Sega CD over there!) which was referencing the original Metal Gear games! What a circle! Snatcher is worth a play if you fancy it - it's a menu based Cyberpunk adventure, with some obvious Blade Runner rip offs but lots of fun for its day! (It was also the previous game to Policemauts, which was the game Hal references in MGS1 and also featured Meryl as a character!)

I kind of feel like it's like TLOU it was hard for me just to see the items from a distance it was more like I had to be right up on the item to know I had to pick it up. This Game is much different than the last 3 for sure. Watching you play this make me want to play this all over again just like MG3 lol.

04:00 No chat? Who am I writing to the whole time then? Snake doesn't sound older, just like he has never cleared his throat. 😂 Finally we got a crouch walk and a button to hug walls! Fucking moo-ing Metal Gears. 31:10 It was "No Place To Hide" on one side and "No Place For Hideo" on the other. 32:05 Snake's looking for explosives. Could've been a trap for other soldiers that pick up that weapon and then activate the explosive. He tried to get the knife between the trigger of the explosive and the weapon. 01:19:25 It not just raises his Psyche. Super fun first episode! Hope you're having an amazing day, Whimsy!
