Just for context: these pieces are a repro from IM Biro Sandors (Romanian-Hungarian), hence the name of the pieces) chess set and certainly not an RCM original. One can order the original directly from him, through his website. He is making them on his own at age 60+.

I've ordered an original from IM Sandor Biro because this is his design not anyone else's.

Hi, Al. Hopefully they will honor the creator of the design BIRO SANDOR since the fine gentleman is still alive, creating and selling the pieces to everyone who wants to buy. Nice review by the way. More videos to come.

Bíró Sándor created the style. He's an ethnic Hungarian from Transylvania. Thats why it's called the Romanian Hungarian set, as in Romanian citizen of Hungarian descent.

I saw these pieces few years ago and fell in love with them... I couldn't find them for the ages... Thanks for posting!

Al, hi. This is a very beautiful and aesthetic set. In addition, it is very affordable to manufacture. One of my latest hobbies is making chess pieces. In this set, the horses are both beautiful and affordable for making without the art of engraving. I will definitely make a similar set in the near future. Thank you so much for this clip.

Got my Crimson Red and Boxwood Romanian/Hungarian set from them before The Queen's Gambit boom and inflation for around $76 if I remember correctly. I miss the days before the chess boom and inflation. At first this set didn't set well with me but I came to liking it more and more. I especially like the hybrid design. Western King design with Eastern Bishop design. The 1950's Bohemia Chess set is like that also. You might like the 3.5 inch 1930 German Knubbel set from Staunton Castle. The Knubbel set has to be the most unique chess set that I own. Normally it is a library size 3.0 inch set but Staunton Castle increased the size to 3.5 inch for a more playable set.

Al, I always place my knights facing sideways because they are easier to spot that way. Why you, and most people, place them facing forwards?

Agree!

Good observation. Maybe because they are going forward into battle?

Another great video Al! I have to say, I did not initially like the looks of this set, but after your extended close-ups, I've grown quite fond of the design. It very much has a "working set" feel, as you say. Were you able to find the link to the board in this video? I seem to recall it from one of your other videos. Thanks again for your ongoing efforts. Happy New Year.

Honestly at first I thought these look pretty weird, but after watching your video I actually really really like this vid. Does anyone know where to get this set, or a very similar one in Europe?

Hi Alex, would the rosewood pair well with the Queen’s Gambit board?
@AlSuChess Жыл бұрын
I think golden rosewood pairs well with almost everything you use it with as far as pieces! Bud or blood rosewood is less neutral and might pair not as well although by itself is very aesthetic! Which queen's gambit board are you referring to? send me a link.

Love the knight, hate the little ball on top of the bishop being the wrong color

I have the same set, gifted to me on my birthday by my former players. Copied in monotone by Filipino artisans.

Given it is notoriously known that it is BIRO SANDOR design, they should credit him and pay royalties for the use of his design. That’s the law ;) By the way, publicizing some intellectual property infringement exposes you and your KZbin channel. Cheers.

For info, they shall be authorized to use this design from 70 years after author’s death. Not before that.
