LYRICS❤ [Verse 1] How green, how green was my valley? To be told of such hills To be held in such spots To behold such warmth Call to arms these harmonies! And in happy agony we sing How green, how green was my valley? [Chorus] How green, how green was my valley? [Verse 2] Oh, your deeps and your shades Where the wild roses pray Such heat from pride Glorious, the voice of man! Like the nightingales, we sing [Chorus] How green, how green was my valley? How green, how green was my valley? [Verse 3] Clear softness in our hymn Soft, like coming rain Soft, like Bronwen Victoria! Victoria! Voices our queen might envy [Chorus] How green, how green was my valley? How green, how green was my valley?

"How green, how green was my valley?" Like a lover asking the beloved about the youth he had given her or she had given him. As if to ask Do you remember? How it was? And to be overcome by memories of those times like they are eternal. Such a beautifully sad past tense. But so incredibly full of hope. May I live like this song is.

Here's my interpretation of Relaxer as an album: The whole thing is a troubled love story that doesn't go very well for either person, each song moving the narrative of the two lovers further. I actually think the music video for 3WW tells the story of the whooe album in a way: 3WW: This sets out where the male character was before meeting his lover. He spends his nights looking for women to spend it with, trying to find love In Cold Blood: This sets out the story of the female character, who is most likely depressed in some way, shown by the fact she is 'sinking' to the bottom of the pool HOTRS: Although this is a cover, it's a song that promotes warmth especially in the way Alt-J deliver it, and so it implies the two characters have met and formed a strong bond. Their troubled stories mean they need each other to fillout their lives Hit Me Like That Snare: This describes the sexual side of their relationship, raunchy and built on almost animalistic love The next song with a name I cant remember off the top of my head: This one is difficult as it feels very sharp and quick but is quite lenghty. Maybe that's the point however, as the man in the relationship doesn't realise the damage he is doing to himself and her. He has become blurred by his lust for the woman and she can't seem to take it anymore Adeline: This is the aftermath of their breakup. The man has realised the error of his ways and so is looking on at the woman, now far away, singing to her as if she was still there, wishing her well. She is told to swim on whereas before she was drowing, implying that she has improved herself mentally Last Year: This brings in the woman who actually sounds happy, set against the lighyer acoustics than the man, who's strange vocals suggest he has become broken by noy being with her. I think swiming is some kind of metaphore for a mental state, as in this song the man says how he promised to swim to her (get back with her maybe?) suggesting he was not able to due to his deteriorating state, and so instead drowned (killed himself). This comes as a surprise as it was implied the woman was the one with bad mental health, but the man, making the same mistakes as he did in 3WW, became the unhappy one Pleader: This is the funeral, hence the choral sounds. The man compares himself to a valley, a metaphorical question about what it was like to be with him maybe? a valley is often seen positively as it suggests nature etc, so maybe he regrets doing what he did? For some reason, the 3WW video seems to tell this story, with the woman apparently dead but breaking out of the coffin, then we see the man deas instead. However it also looks like both are dead in 3WW, so maybe the woman kills herself at some stage in the album as well (possibly Adeline) and that is what drives the man to kill himself? Just my thoughts on the album 😊

After having listened to this album five or six times I reckon this song as one of the best of the composition as well as a very good "exiting" piece of music. I can't exactly tell why but it gives me a sort of sense of wisdom compared to the other songs. The chorals are like the result of what you've learned in the process of composing the entire album, and placing Pleader at the end of it reminds me of the recap or summary at the end of a good book, when you recall all the good memories you've collected.

To behold such warmth, fills me with nostalgia and gratitude towards my family. Everything I have now and ever have experienced is owed to my ancestors. They braved tremendous obstacles to create our comfort. The metaphorical valleys of my youth -- even if created by ignorantly destructive means -- were greener than I can now ever imagine or hope to provide to the next generation. It WAS glorious.
