Gus Unger-Hamilton of alt-J about Last Year in an interview with IndieShuffle: "Marika’s part is another a song within a song. The first part, where Joe is singing, is someone reading sort of literally of this decline and depression and death over the course of a year. And the final line is “to be sang at my funeral,” which leads into this person singing at his funeral. It’s a very, very sad song. It was the last song to be added to the album. It was one that was written at Christmas. Joe was talking to me about it and like, “Yeah, it’s really, really, really sad. I’m not sure I can show it to anybody, it’s depressing.” But it’s a beautiful song, so we put it on the album."

They put so much meaning into their songs, tha'ts what I love about them. Every lyric is deep and can be interrupted differently, their music is depressing and happy at the same time. Its gorgeous.

I feel so hopeless and empty. I’ve always read comments like this but never made one myself. I guess it brings a sense of comfort to know someone is reading my words. I don’t know how much longer I can do this. I don’t even feel human anymore. the pain takes more and more from me everyday. I don’t dream of my old life anymore.i dream of this one ending. I would never wish this feeling on anyone.

Is this about a school-shooter? The first half of thr year he's sounding all depressed, then in the later months he says "firework display in my old school cafeteria", which sounds like it could be a softened term for a shooting. Then it talks about his funeral, so he could've possibly been killed in a shootout or taken his own life? Alt-J are simply indecipherable, and I love them
