That's because the system is not designed for near-field listening. At this distance from the camera and mike, the wave front from the midrange speaker (top) hasn't blended with the wave from the lower transducer to form a coherent sound, without the echoic effect you hear now. It's called the "Rain-barrel effect", making the singer sounds like she's down in a well. I assure you, they don't sound like that, properly set-up and miked. Otherwise thousands and thousands of theater and concert halls around the world wouldn't have chosen Altec-Lansing products for half a century or more. The room could use some acoustic treatment, too.
