when doing wipe don't select external storage as for the I/O error you need to do a factory rest from MI settings then reinstall TWRP using your PC

AL Tech Thanks. How do I do the factory rest?... I can not access the Mi regular UI since it only loads the recovery mode ( the one shown in the video min 20:47). When I reboot the device it only displays the Mi logo and gets frozen... or the recovery UI when pressing home&menu buttons....Can I do factory rest from there? Thanks a lot

sounds like you broke it, try repeating the steps from the beginning. but first, which recovery UI did you get when pressing home&menu buttons? the TWRP or MI recovery?

The UI that is shown in the video at minute 20:50 The team win recovery project UI. There is no OS installed so I guess that I should install the TWRP recovery but my PC does not recognize the adb.exe file (even I have installed the drivers). When I tried to install it, I get a device-null error Can't connect the PC with the mi Box

Thank you so much for the tutorial. Everything went great with my installation. For those who had problems in the last step. Leave the usb stick in the hub, unplug power, plug it again while pressing the buttons in the remote for the recovery. Now the mibox should see the stick and continue installation. At least mine did

I had gotten stuck at TWRP Installer. It just won't work even after Factory Reset as you mentioned in your Point #3. Then I rooted the box using Kingoroot on PC and then it worked.

Thanks! Now I can use my forgotten old mi box as a kodi client. It was on version 1.5.xx before. I followed all the steps in the video without much problems, except the part that TWRP cannot see usb drive / the rom folder. In case there's someone like me who's not familiar with the process, in my case I can make the TWRP saw the usb drive after clicking reboot (into recovery). You can check if it recognized usb in TWRP home -> advanced -> file manager -> usbotg. If u see the content in usb drive then its ok. Next is the part OP commented about renaming the TWRP backup ROM folder so TWRP can restore from it. I didnt get it at first but later saw the backup button on TWRP first page. Click it and choose to make small backup files on your usb drive. Take out the drive and plug into pc, now there's a new folder named after your mibox id and a subfolder. Delete the files inside that subfolder and put files from TWRP backup inside it. Plug the drive back to the hub. (reboot TWRP into recovery again if needed). Now you should be able to restore ROM from it.

Thank you for tutorial, in my case little different. my mi box unable booting to recovery via button back+ok in remote so i use adb to reboot to recovery mode and then downgrade to ROM 1.3.106, i managed to restore Android TV without second update. skip second update , after boot to TWRP wipe and restore. it's working.

Thanks for the detailed instructions. Got my Mi box to Android TV build via TWRP backup rom install. However, I can't get it to recognize any USB stick now; both usb debugging ON and 2nd option in stroage are selected correctly. Prime tv app from play store loads but will not play any video. Is there a new updated ROM backup, perhaps one from US model?

For those still trying to do this: if your Mi box was ever on firmware 1.5.x, chances are that you won't be to get the modified/rooted 1.4.32 update from this video to install, because your box's boot partition got updated with increased security (against rooting). Downgrading did not remove the protection for me. I was able to downgrade to 1.3.106 but it won't get rooted and it won't upgrade to the modified/pre-rooted 1.4.32.

You are right, It was like this with mine Mi Box, but luckily there is a manner to fix it. You have to disassembly Mi Box, and short two spots on mainboard, then in PC using USB burning tool you are able to flash it with stock firmware. Latter you can just follow this video tutorial.

I can only select Wifi... any ideas ? I also installed Kodi but I'm unable to add sources for the videos... I have a NAS connected to my network and the Nvidia shield I have in the living room has no issue finding it, but the mi box doesn't find it (either bu NFS, FTP or upnp) :( Before flashing Android TV, I didn't the 2 issues above. regarding "Ethernet-USB adapter" I don't think they are supported via OTG on Android, however, the box is pre-rooted and you can install any USB driver you want, but it's kinda difficult. as for the NAS Issue sorry, i don't use Kodi I recommend Plex it works for me without any problems.

Hi AL tech, Just want to thank you for your great video help me through this, 1 must unpair your remote control in order to sucessful trigge the recover mode 2 downgrade to 1.3..... 3 upgrade to 1.4.... 4 connect usb a to a 5 install twrp stock 6 install twrp recovery 7 back a test rom 8 replace the test rom with twrp backup rom if in middle of the process your tvbox became brick, just connect to pc with the usb a to a cable, try to run twrp recovery again, you tvbox will reboot to recovery.

+Cristian Quintero My box did recognise the USB but the file could not be found. I tried everything suggested including the video linked above but nothing worked.I then found a tutorial which explained you need to find the device serial, but we already know the serial. I followed the instructions: Click on backup, select just one option possibly a 4mb and create backup, now hit back and go into file explorer then Twp and backup where you will find your backup with the serial you typed for your device, you will also find the new backup with a different serial, copy this serial and delete it. Now rename your original file with new serial you obtained and that will be it. Go back to restore the file will now show up. This worked for me, really surprised as I had used my box serial when I used version one but somehow my box has a different serial now, go figure this box seems to have a lot of quirks!

Hello and thanks for a great guide. I'm stuck at the part where you connect the Mi Box 3 to the pc. I have enabled adb debugging on the box. It's the adb drivers for the pc that is difficult. I have windows 10. I can't get windows to recognize the Box right away. After some trying I finally get the box to show up like in your video. I use some other drivers. I then run the TWRP recovery installer. The program doesnt finish from screen "copying to device" It stays there forever. How to progress like your video? Thanks :)

Right now my USB Drive is formated with the Ex2 format, I can see and browse in the USB Drive and its archives, but the ApptoideTV only installs apps on the internal memory. your welcome, I'm not sour about the USB format, I use fat32. as for ApptoideTV try to match the settings here 26:57 and allow ROOT access.

Hey, the format that worked the best was ExFAT, in the Kodi app says to not use the Fat32 format. Now I've been having a problem with Kodi, it don't install any addons when it is installed in the USB Drive. Do you know of something that can be done to work this out? Thank you!

during the initial downgrade I'll hold the back button + ok button and then plug the power adapter in but it only shows the recovery screen like 1 out of 25 tries...then even if it does get to the recovery screen, the progress bar under the little rabbit gets to about 10% and then it brings me to some sort of recovery options screen that says things like "boot from ext, boot from cache" what the heck am i doing wrong?

there are many things you could be doing it wrong I don't know - the 2 files on the root of fat32 USB drive - your remote is not the Bluetooth type - your box firmware is deferent

it needs to be OFF or "deny" so you can use USB drive or mouse. select deny then restart the box it should work. -when ADB is ON the USB change so you can connect the box to a PC.

+Mohan Jain some apps are designed for Android TV and some are designed to work on either platform like "ES Explorer", if you installed apps designd for Android TV, they will show up on the home screen. And if you have many it will be three or more line of apps if you used Google play store you're guaranteed Android TV apps, however, Google Play store only install and update to the internal storage. 2. yes I know I'm working on it. 3. It's very different, the international version is much better, xiaomi release this Chinese version, and they make it impossible to run the international version. I HATE Xiaomi.

I can downgrade from 1.5.93 to 1.3.106 but I can't for the life of me initiate the update to 1.4.32 or 1.4.15 (old). The same method that works when at 1.5.93 doesn't work with the 1.3 recovery OR the 1.4 update package. I don't understand.

Hi Al Tech .. I am installing all the apps in external USB now. There are very few apps in the internal memory of MiBox. But still it shows only 200Mb of internal memory. Out of about 1.77 GB, Apps = 700 Mb and 'Others' = 850 MB. What can be deleted in this internal memory so that some more memory is relieved. Can we use Systems App Remover (Root) apk to clear some memory ? 2. The original MiBox FIle Explorer shows all the music files .. but does not play them anymore. I liked this app bcoz it also showed the lyrics of the song being played. 3. Is there anyway to Google Cast our android phones as is there in the International version of MiBox ??

i have not root the device with king root or something else. i have just put your rom so is it possible that the rom don't have include the file "libbt-vendor.so", "libwvdrm_L3.so", "libwvm.so" , "libWVStreamControlAPI_L3.so" and the 2 folder "DRM" and "MEDIADRM" in "system/vendor/lib".

in case you didn't notice, the ROM is pre-rooted. you can add these plugins yourself. the problem it needs to be licensed, in order for it to work for this device. I can't do that where I live, it's a risk for me, I could get sued. Hello, I have the MI box MDZ-16-AA running on MUI 1.5.25 chinese version. I have tried all possible ways found online to set it on the recovery mode but it has failed. Is there any other way to install the engilsh mode without entering the recovery mode? . I have tried the back + Ok, menu + ok but all have failed. Thanks

I'm not sure, but I think you must unpair your remote control in order to successfully trigger the recovery mode

It just stops during the first step, shows "error!" during the installation of the update. I'm stuck on 2.4.2 (147) - MIUI TV 1.5.4 Factory Reset returned to this same version. Great job, by the way. Great knowledge of the platforms.

try to enter recovery and choose the last option restore system then you should be running 1.3.114 then try to downgrade to 1.3.106 and the other steps

there is this way to force flash it but it's very difficult to do kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqCofGSPetKbd6M here are the most detailed way I can describe it 2. put the TV box on ADB Debugging and restart it. 3. plug it in PC (windows) using A to A USB cable. 4. have the USB Drive with two files (update.zip + xiaomi_update) from the first folder 1.3.106 Ready (FAT32). 4. Make sure to have all the android and ADB Drives installed on your PC/laptop 5. plug in the tv box to your PC/laptop and wait until it shows up on your computer. 6. have your keyboard or laptop + the USB drive near the tv box. 7. Run "Install-Stock-Recovery.bat" from the "TWRP recovery installer" folder. 8. press any key and wait for the bat file to finish loading and it SAYS "press any key to reboot to recovery" 8.1. Normally if all the previous steps are correct and you press any key for the second time your tv box should reboot to MI recovery (so try it out for the first time just to make sure everything in order if it did boot to MI recovery click reboot and repeat steps 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8. 9. after repeating steps 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 your bat file should say press any key to reboot to recovery. 10.you need to press any key and IMMEDIATELY after it !!!!!! unplug the A to A USB and plug in the USB drive. if it works you should see a picture of a rabbit and Andriod guy and under it says " installing system update". if it dos not work you will boot to MI recovery at this stage you need to try it again!. let me know tomorrow what happens.

Hi Al... I have been able to down grade to 1.3.106 well and then have been able to root the device too. But while updating from 1.3.106 to 1.4.32 ... there is an error which occrs: Installation aborted. OTA Failed.... Recovery is listening sideload .... Waiting ADB sideload command ...... I have tried many types of USB sticks, but all give the same error. Any ideas ?? Is Rooting necessary ?

For anyone that can't enter recovery with the remote, I have bad news. With adb you can enter recovery to downgrade to 1.3.106 BUT... When you're on that version, enabling adb will disable the ability to read from the usb drive. It means you will be stuck on 1.3.106 because plugging in the drive before recovery won't do anything. It won't see the update anymore. What we need is a way to initiate the update from internal storage. Does anybody have an idea what (non-usb) folder recovery will try to update from?

try a different VPN service, the Tv box new software is a mix between, Android TV and the normal android OS. if the app is not designed to work with Android TV it's probably not gonna work on it.

Are you running my "modified 1.4.32 ROM"? if so, try "factory reset" the box then try TWRP installation.

Yes I am. I did it again and finally I was able to enter the new recovery mode. However, The restore package can not be selected because it is not displayed. I've tried copying TWRP folder in a flash with Fat32 format and NTFS. Unfortunately, both didn't succeeded. Every time I get closer something happens :/

Alyaa Al Arafati I notes a lot of people having the same problem, it's probably cuz this MIbox has differents version in the same model name, anyway here is how to fix TWRP backup not showing. you need to change the backup folder name, to match your box name. the best way to do that is by creating a small backup using TWRP, then copy the folder name and delete it, then rename my backup folder with the copied name. currently my mibox is running 1.5.1 firmware version. I'm trying to downgrade the firmware, but I cant get into recovery mode, both by pressing OK+back button nor Home+menu button. if it did not work, try to enter recovery without USB drive. if you still can't enter recovery, enable ADB debugging. plug it to your PC and run the "Install-Stock-Recovery.bat", from the TWRP recovery installer folder. it should take you to MI recovery, at this point chose the last option to restore it to the original firmware. hope this information help you.

Can you help . I think my mi box has a bug I can't get the internal storage to work correctly. Now I don't know if there's a limit on the storage first time I tried I 32 GB SanDisk card three point 0 Flash Dr. and it said it was too slow. So then I tried to 64 Gb three point 0 SanDisk Doctor No luck. Now I have a 1 TB Seagate slim Plus hard drive. And I do know how to set it up as I have a 16 gigabyte Nvidia shield with 1 TB of storage. Have you put external storage onto the 2.0 engine right informed it to the internal storage or the device storage please give me a reply back would be greatly appreciated thank you
