Answer is simple: NEVER listen to Twitter. They might seem like the entire fanbase but they are not. People who give you money are your fanbase.
@lorzon3 жыл бұрын
This point exactly. Twitter has a total user count somewhere just north of 20 million. That's all. Their actual total ACTIVE users, meaning those that post more than once or twice a week, is about 1/100 of that, so around 200k. And of that 200k, the ones that post the most are the Blue Checkmark Woke Brigade which largely consists of Lamestream Media hacks, Left-wing pundits, and their attendant flunkies, minions and sycophants. So on the Media side, this whole shenanigans is being perpetrated by 100 or 200 people and amplified by the other 100,000. That's scary and also instructional that no single entity should have that kind of power. Twitter is cancer. One of the biggest problems with movies these days is that most film critics are in a constant state of burnout because all they do is watch movies all day and after a while all they want to do is see something different and most directors know this, so they're always trying to come up with an ending where you can't see it coming, so the critics are happy. The ending could be something that doesn't make any sense in any way, shape or form and completely ruins the movie, but because the critics didn't see it coming that means it's great to them, because they were surprised.

@kiplingwasafurry11082 жыл бұрын
Special effects are sometimes needed but nowadays companies like Disney rely on them exclusively to the point where it’s laughable, like when they had to green screen someone into a room. They’re also rushing VFX studios so the work looks unfinished and shitty, when it could’ve been great if they had more time. Contrast that to films like Lord of the Rings where CGI is used to create monsters like the Balrog and the eye of Sauron. After 20 years they still hold up visually because the team was so passionate about the project and put the time and effort into making those effects.

I truly believe your motivation has an effect on your art. Movies, games, books, and art in general seem to be most effective when the artist in question is motivated by passion more than they are by anything else. Not saying that being passionate about something always makes it successful, nor am I saying you can't have other motivations as well, it's just that having a motivation that displaces your passion for your artistic expression usually leads to something subpar or presents something displeasing to the user/viewer of the art. One example of this usually comes from greed, or basically the primary motivation being money above all else. Of course people usually make art to make money, but a good artist lets their passion drive them and gets money as a byproduct of that, not the otherway around. EA is a prime example of why this can be so bad, both for the image the company presents to others and for the consumer who gets subpar products that's only purpose is to manipulate you into giving EA more money. Another example is "agenda pushing." Art driven by a message is fine, as many put out art through what they believe in. Using your art to shove that message down other peoples throats, is not. When your art is second to the message instead of the art itself expressing that message, it comes off as out of place and forceful. A character (especially a main one) defined only by, and whose purpose is only to present their, gender, or sexuality, or race, or creed, makes for a shallow character that doesn't actually have a purpose within the story itself. A gay character who may have problems related to their sexuality, but that isn't only defined by them, can make for good art and a great story, while also passing the message along.

I always think on 3 segments segments from Mr Plinkett reviews from his Indiana Jones, Titanic, and JJ Abrams Star Trek when he discusses how movies are actually made now. And you touched on some of it: Project Security. Marketibility. Studios are always competing with other studios for your attention. So an established IP is more likely to grab your attention than something new and original that you've never heard of before. Original stories were easier to notice back then because the market was far less saturated a few decades ago. I'm 33 and I can recall living with my Grandmother and expieriencing a time before cable, the tail end of an era where you'd be lucky to have 5 channels XD Nowadays you can actually FEEL when something is being made because it'll make someone point and go "Oh hey! I remember that!" And Cha Ching! It's really the simplest way to green light a project. My own thoughts stem from lack of appealing characters. Most stories tend to have a character or characters that you can at least understand their motives and distinct personalities given their situations even if you didnt agree with them. It's so easy to see now when someone is placed in a setting to hammer you with some passive aggressive political ideal. It's not poignant or clever, and gets really apparent how shallow sensitive, and defensive those standpoints are when it bleeds into their real life behavior and reactions to critism. It's not a topic point for them. It's an absolute. And you're wrong if you dont agree. Theyll tellnyou you're the problem. No one really listens to celebrities anymore. We can acknowledge their talent and efforts to get to where they are. But having producers, directors and higher ups, people in control try to lecture an audience on a stance they dont adhere to, it can be an immediate turn off because its value and meaning has become twisted and saturated and overdone. Which leads into politics. Which I'm not getting into here. That is already an ongoing situation being talked about. There's more to the problem than that, so I wanted to try and bring up some other potential points ^^ There's a bunch of talk points cropping up about this growing desire for creativity and risk takers to return to Hollywood and I love it.
@BigBlobProductions3 жыл бұрын
You totally hit the nail on the head. I remember being flabbergasted when I went to film school, how much talent and creativity people in LA had and that literally none of them got any of it out there because only the safe mediocre garbage was either being produced or reproduced. Hollywood isn't out of ideas, they are out of balls. Also, you are completely right about the religiosity of pushing messages in films. I'm a Christian, but I have always been amazed at the garbage produced by christian filmmakers and how much creativity is actually stifled or shamed. People don't understand Art. Yes, we tell stories to others but art is first and foremost for yourself, because if it is not coming from a genuine part of yourself, that you had to wrestle with and sort out for yourself, then its just an attempt to tell other people what they want to hear so you can be accepted and THAT IS NOT ART. I personally believe its time to leave Hollywood to burn. Independent artists need to start banding together and helping each other out and standing up for each other. The internet and digital editing, cinematography, animation, etc. has become so much more accessible and affordable that we have a real chance to change things for the better. If we want to. God Bless, keep up the good fight.

Honestly, I plan on homeschooling my kid. I was suspended for a year and ostracized from my highschool because I wrote a horror story. I used elements from Hellraiser, Wishmaster, Elm Street, and fused those concepts with the Bible. I wrote a very edgy teen horror novel with a lot of gore and sex for shock value, but I sucked at grammar. Gave it to a friend to proofread and she left it in class. A teacher read it, confronted her, and she sold me out saying she was afraid of me so she wouldn't get into trouble. Teacher sent it to the principal who called the police. I was escorted out of school in handcuffs by cops (despite not being arrested) because of a horror story. This killed almost every ounce of creativity I have. My stepmother trashed the book and I didn't care to ever try to rewrite it. My dream was to be the next Clive Barker. That drive was crushed and hasn't recovered 15 years later.

Big Trouble in Little China may not be the best movie but Kurt Russell with a mullet playing the bumbling idiot side kick against a ancient Chinese sorcerer and his super human henchman is gold in my book. thing is.... that movie came from a book. it not whether something is original anymore (cause nothing can really be original today, some version of everything has been done), it's how well it can be executed. heck, even if you do have a truly original idea, if you cant execute it well its kinda worthless(to the immediate public)

The line about not being able to challenge teachers struck home. My second grade teacher asked how to find what the base number of a story problem is and ended by saying that the little number must always be subtracted by the big number. I challenged that by bringing up negative numbers and upon her denial of their existence, I was labeled as the "dumb blonde kid". Jokes on them I never had a problem with algebra, geometry, or calculus!

Id say a general lack of willingness to take a risk on a movei that takes more to make and might fail then to reboot something and now you dont kneed to right a scrip just change the one that already exist, and on top of that people cant really afford to go to the movies as much wich is ( used to be ) the main source of income for moveis, and on top of THAT Indie movie company's that are willing to take risk who cant take hits like the big corps and end up getting eaten buy Disney.

Ghostbusters 2016, Disney's Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, Charlies Angels Remake from 2019, Wonder Woman 1984, X-Men Dark Phoenix, Terminator Dark Fate, Mulan Remake, Captain Marvel. So many examples of Hollywood's obsession with pushing an agenda and being politically correct. Instead of focusing on creating a great story with well developed characters. Most of well not focusing on being fun and entertaining. My hats off for Chris for speaking his mind and saying how a lot of us moviegoers are feeling inside currently with the state of modern day cinema. Where are the modern franchises that fresh in story and vision? Will we see another Back to the Future, Predator, Alien, The Matrix, Men in Black, Star Wars, Star Trek, Jurassic Park, Terminator etc? Who knows but I hope so!

Why are modern *American* movies boring? The answer is no passion, no original ideas, woke politics and useless pandering.
@adamrak75603 жыл бұрын
Smaller budget movies are often much better, because they are made mostly out of passion and original ideas, instead of relying on special effects and clichés .
@brygei38063 жыл бұрын
@@adamrak7560 THAT I 100% agree on. If they're indie movies that use special effects they usually try harder and get real creative with the budget and materials they have. Take Gareth Edwards "Monsters" for example. Or the horror movies "The Void" and "Color out of Space".

Excellent video. I'm from the 80s, so I have a very good idea of what you're saying, as I've witnessed the entire process first hand. Culturally we are stagnant at this point... Thank fully, we are pass the peak "entitlement curve", as we are seeing more and more proliferation of videos such as yours and attempts from lower resource tier creatives to be unapologetically creative. Naturally this currently still bumps hard against the entrenched industry clique and corporate culture mentality in what is a pretty fierce war. At the end of the day though, I believe that this is a vey important war of reaching adulthood as a civilization and to understand and embrace the meaning of effort and break away from the social fear of acceptance in the juvenile mindset that dominates our perceptions now. Hence we cannot allow oppressive, regressive and supremacist minorities of any political mentality to win. Jordan Peterson, in my personal opinion, explains this quite well. The good thing is that we as a species have the ability to derive genuine pleasure from effort that cannot be substituted; thus we are able to appreciate the effort of others as we judge it from the finished product of their labour, especially as it relates to the biological evolution of our species. So, a well crafted story that appeals to our understanding of effort will always pay off more than the shallow level of entitlement "entertainment" offered by the entrenched industry. A good, balanced meal is worth a thousand McDonalds burgers. The other good thing here is that, once the proliferation of creative works being supported monetarily by a willing, appreciative populace reaches a certain point, the entrenched industry will have no choice but to follow suit and start taking more risks or risk being replaced; that's how we got to this point after all, the industry is always the last to react to such social changes. Once this is done, the current movements of entitlements will become miniscule and harden, taking their place as small, pointless growths on the edges of society, following such outdated and cancerous relics such as communism and fascism, barking to hopelessly regain power as they are left back in the pages of history by an evolving race. Because money talks. Also, I find you immensely pettable and cute, that avatar really hit my spot for cuteness!

There was a time I went to the movies at least once a week, and then about 9 or 10 years ago it was maybe a couple times a month, then every other month, and the last few years (prior to 2020) I only really went to special Fathom events or weird movies at the art museum. Hollywood's just so generic and boring and safe.

don't forget the number of people involved in the creative process. It used to be the writer and director had all the creative control, but now everyone has to add their 2 cents from the 6 writers the guy who does the screen play the 30 or so producers the 3-4 executive producers the actors all the way down to the Key grip.

16:05 that's how fascists work. Everything must have the same messages, the same ideas, the same tropes, and of course, punishment for wrongthink. Captain marvel/harley quinn/batwhammen are all the right portrayals of women, but Gina Carano must be excommunicated. The goal isn't to make good entertainment, it's not even to make good propaganda, it's to make everything propaganda for their ideology. Everything within the woke, nothing outside the woke, nothing against the woke.

I can't argue too much about this, a bit of this is why in the last year I think I've gone to the theaters more then most years before it (I'm in Florida where things like this opened a lot earlier then most) mostly because with no new releases they had been running some of the best movies of the past. Goonies, Star Wars, Gremlins, the first three Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, so much stuff that I didn't get to see in theaters back when I was young and too poor to see I got to see on the big screen and I so loved it.

There’s A LOT that can be said about this topic. The shifts between studio films through the decades and today is enormous. But I will say this: last night I was watching a film from 1977 called Looking for Mr. Goodbar, and this was from a well established Hollywood director making films for decades, starring Diane Keaton who has already established herself in Hollywood. But Looking for Mr. Goodbar was wild, provocative, and was controversial back then, but was nominated for a couple Oscars...... What was the last Hollywood film, never mind an Oscar nominated film, to invoke a controversial discussion? That’s where the problem lies.

Oh, that's easy to answer, in the entertainment industry a attempt to make films that sumiltaniously appeal to an American AND Chinese audience, all the while observing Chinese censorship measures, has resulted in bland films that appeal to neither audeance.
