Alter Jägermarsch was composed in 1813 during the Napoleonic Wars for the Prussian Jägers. Elite sharpshooters that acted as light infantry for the Prussian army. This song was quite a popular tune not only among Prussian and later German Jägers, but other Regiments of Infantry found the tune to be quite a moral boost. After the song was composed, the Russian army (of whome Prussia was allied with in 1813) adapted it in there also now famous "егерский марш"
