I have never been all that impressed with the Amiga... I can count on one hand the amount of games I found impressive and that I liked. My two twin cousins had an Amiga 500 and I had a Mega Drive. They'd always chide me for my choice, but after seeing what they had, I was so glad I asked for a Mega Drive for Christmas. Arcade ports on the Amiga were generally very poor conversions. It did however have some great original titles. My favourite games on the Amiga are: Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge Lotus Turbo Challenge 2 Desert Strike Road Rash Alien 3 Walker Robocod James Pond 2. I'm sure there are plenty of others out there that are decent games but all in all, arcade ports were crap on the Amiga.

The Master System version was probably the time when I thought to myself "maybe I'm ready for a Megadrive". Still it was a cool game with huge sprites and zombies. The Atari ST version was quite good. Activision had a pretty decent track record for arcade conversions .

PC Engine versions are nice, but Genesis version beats all but arcade. This was the pack-in game for the Sega Genesis too, and I played the shit out of it as a kid.

i remember when this came out in the arcades. i thought it was absolutely fantastic, unquestionably my favourite arcade game. in hindsight i was to young to realise it was a pretty shallow game and without the flashy graphics you weren't left with much. 1st home version i played was the cpc version which was just a slow mess. a couple of years later i played the Megadrive version but by that time the lustre of the game had worn away. Still, that version was very close.

I still remember when I got to play (or even see) an MD/Genesis for the first time and it was running this game. After years of NES games, it certainly made a huge impression with its huge sprites, parallax backgrounds, stereo music and clear voices. Even the 3 button control was so cool and novel for the time. It made me want an MD more than I wanted girls. But yeah... it's mostly a 20 minute tech demo. I still replay it from time to time though.

Why is it so choppy? Amiga fans keep implying that their hardware is so much more powerful than the Mega Drive and I never seen the evidence of this. Every ports I've seen looks and runs better on the MD.

I mean, I recently heard a guy claim that Amiga was more powerful than even the Sharp X68000, which is knowns for pixel-perfect CPS1 ports. Had Amiga even come close with any of its own CPS1 ports? I just mostly see Amiga stuff in comparisons like this and it always ends up looking worse than the MD version.

I grew up with the Atari ST port (still have the box but not the disk anymore) and it's actually quite decent! It even has digit speech which is lacking in some other versions and it looks pretty good. I don't remember about how it plays though. Then it's absolutely crazy the difference in sprite size between the Master System (1:44) and NES (7:42) versions! But it's at the expense of the frame rate which is much lower on Master System. Also the NES version has several exclusive stages that come with exclusive transformations. But man, dat character portrait in the HUD bar xD But the best home version is more likely the Mega Drive port. It's an extremely popular game which was indeed impressive at the time with its huge sprites, parallax scrollings, digitized speech and smooth gameplay even in 2 player co-op. But there's one thing that annoys me which is the lack of background that turns grey when facing a boss. This sets a cool atmosphere so it missing from the Mega Drive version is rather sad (but maybe it was a deliberate move from Sega so that the screenshots were more attractive on the boxes? Just check out the Altered Beast console bundle, the boss fights are everywhere on it!).

Overall I have to say the Genesis version just edges out the Arcade. The Arcade had some better effects and voices but the Sega version had all that cool multi layered scrolling!

It also doesn't have that terrible dithering found in the Megadrive version. The smoke effects resemble the arcade version. More importantly, the controls are EXACTLY like th arcade version. The tg-16 version is by far the best home port of the game

That's a bit of a myth - the Amiga just doesn't have the sprite hardware, which is what this game needs. That's why it's best on the PC Engine and Megadrive. You could use the copper to do something better than this, but it still wouldn't be near those two versions. The best thing to do would be to have smaller sprites and then it would move and play better.

It's close enough and even best the arcade when it comes to parallax scrolling. The differences in hardware and ROM sizes made a perfect port impossible though. The System 16 hardware was a lot more expensive and had a lot more pricey RAM and ROM to work with.
