Lyrics
Her head is full of nonsense
But she says her heart is true, fool for you
To play a game with you is all she really wants to do
It's easy with you
See those eyes, see those lies
Her aim is not to please
All she wants to do is tease
So cute for you
I'm feeling rather funny
And I don't know who I am
A puppet for you
I'll forget for you, forget those eyes, forget those lies
You don't care about
You don't care about
That she'll forget about
That she'll forget about
See those eyes, see those lies
Her head is full of nonsense
But she says her heart is true, fool for you
I'm feeling rather funny and I don't know who I am
I'll forget for you, forget those eyes, forget those lies
You don't care about
You don't care about
That she'll forget about
That she'll forget about
Her aim is not to please
All she wants to do is tease
So cute for you
I'm feeling rather funny and I don't know who I am
I'll forget for you
Forget those eyes, forget those lies
You don't care about
You don't care about
That she'll forget about
That she'll forget about
To play a game with you is all she really wants to do
It's easy with you
See those eyes

Just viewed a recent performance of the current AI lineup performing "DTTMAL" recorded less that a year ago (March '22), and Clare is still holding up very well - so the use of the past tense seems a bit limiting, IMO.

Pinky Blue, the whole album, was radical, received some truly brutal notices, was essentially renounced by them within a year, is still underrated as a landmark achievement, even with the posthumous (yet insufficient) respect to the genius of Martin Rushent. The band was a real band, not "Clare + whoever" - Licks and hooks and riffs and snare. Gorgeous deep tracks on Pinky Blue include "Forgotten" "Think That It Might" and "See You Later." The most obviously original track on Pinky Blue is "Funny Funny Me" - that was the one I would play for my prog rock skeptic acquaintances because it was so obviously attuned to the then-now of Glass/Reich type hyperrepetition. Then if you listened to the lyrics, you have a very funny picture of an unsatisfactory relationship. It's exciting as a lifer fan to keep seeing various versions of See Those Eyes emerge, how Clare acts out the singing of this song (see her astounding Top Of The Pops in the same designer outfit as in the incredibly hip The Prisoner video of this same song). Altered Images believed, they were real.

What a truly insightful and heartfelt comment. I genuinely welled up a little. It’s simply impossible, to convey to today’s youth - or indeed even to anyone under, for the sake of argument, the age of forty - just what a cultural and personal touchstone these bands, their members, the tracks and the programmes on which they appeared were. Likewise the physical wait for a single’s/album’s release, the physical journey to the record shop, the study of every aspect of the sleeve, the study of NME/Melody Maker, the run-walk-run home from school or elsewhere, to be in front of mid-afternoon pop shows, etc etc. An effectively unbroken shared cultural experience, from the 1960’s to the 1980’s, ended as of approx 1985 with the advent of the CD. Thank you so much for taking the time. Every so often, just every so often….KZbin redeems itself.

@@johnreeves6286 I did this with CDs so I'm not sure that it ended with them. There was a record shop in my town centre that had a bus stop in front of it and there was a stop across the road from the store to go home. I had a bus stop at the top of my street which took me to the town centre.. If an interesting record came out that week, I would take the first bus on Saturday morning to the town centre, go to the record store, buy the album and then get back on the bus at the stop across the road. Normally I had time to get to the store, buy the CD, cross the road and the same bus that I had got off had just come round to the return stop. Sometimes I would get a comment from the driver who noticed I had been on their bus just a few minutes ago of "Have you changed your mind about going to town?". I just wanted to get the album and get home as fast as I could to be able to listen to it. I would read the whole booklet inside the CD on the bus journey home.

@@johnreeves6286 Wow thanks John, I'm really glad that I tuned in to see if anybody noticed. Just to not keep it totally generational, I don't think that special findings are no longer available for young people, but it is true that it is hard to just discover something that no one has labeled yet, or has already categorized yet (I do listen to WFMU which genuinely surprises me with interesting new music on a regular basis though). All that said, I very much feel the old man pain of missing BROWSING. Browsing just isn't what it used to be. In paperback shops, regular bookstores, record stores, not even "hip" record stores but just normy ones still had cool stuff to find. The random factor just is not there anymore.

@@barnigranero5882 Thanks Barni, of course the CD era was still shopping in person, so your experiences are recognizable to me too. In fact the 90s had some other things in American cities that weren't there before and weren't there much after and that would be independent video-and-zine stores, those small and ultimately doomed retail outfits that provided a lot of community. As the internet becomes more overtly profit-taking day by day, the impetus for community art/music/print replacements will grow. We are not done yet!!
