This is incredible! Easily one of the most engaging and realistic alternate histories I’ve ever seen. It was really enjoyable seeing things swing back and forth, with the empire’s government being forced to reform and change personnel numerous times to crush revolutions and invaders and maintain dynamism. The balance with the Mamelukes in the late medieval and early modern period and the involvement in the Napoleonic Wars was fun to watch! The rivalry with Austria and Russian alliance also set up some very neat actions, as friendly relations ultimately gave the Romans something the Ottomans sorely needed in their late empire. Hats off to you!

Hey man, I’ve been trying the same thing with alternate history, and I think where I’m going wrong is that I’m being to favorable to the Romans most of the time. I’m not being realistic enough & not using proper scenarios for alternate history to work. Watching this makes me realize that & while I was trying to make a video for my own thing, I’m thinking of redoing it for the 4th time lmao, this was a great help to watch
@ponticgreekmapper1335
@ponticgreekmapper1335 2 жыл бұрын
Haha im very glad this was helpful. Yes it's a good idea to try to make some occasions in which the Romans get defeated just so its not that they always win. I'll focus on this one single part in particular and it's that Rhomania only begins to support Syria and Yemen in their civil wars in the year 2014. I believe that in this timeline, Rhomania would've had more of an iron hand in the Middle East region, they would've had a powerful political and economic influence in the region that when something bad happens, Rhomania would've been quick to intervene and sent their soldiers in. Do note also that they're a former colonial power that only recently decolonized in the mid 1950s, they've got that juicy industrial base from all that, they can easily be able to have a more aggressive foreign policy than the Turks of our own timeline, and they're not just gonna let their colonial influence in the region slip from their thumb

This is what Greece should have been like but the lands which I think Greece should have been if we are to be a bit more humble, then I think all the lands of Western Anatolia with Attaleia in the south some miles east of that a vertical line the whole way up to the black sea And on the European side all the lands from central Balkan Mountains and downwards as a great natural barrier and a pretty straight horizontal line from the central Balkan mountains the whole way to Epidamnos on the Nova Epirote coast. All these lands are much of the essence of Greece and I think those are the lands that Greece today should have had.

great video! however, there's a few things i would change; 3:51 I think that the mongol invasions wouldve happened earlier because the mongols were already present in the area and even if they didnt try tro invade the empire, ogedei had already an invasion of europe planned since 1234. Then the invasion would probably end in 1241 with his death and nothing much would happen afterwards as the mongol empire wasnt that strong after that. 7:27 With the collapse of the Ilkhanate in 1335, the Byzantines would probably have organized an invasion of persia as soon as they possibly could. 8:35 As teh Serbian Empire collapsed in 1371, I think the Byzantines would have invaded it right away. 13:26 Since the Safavids started rising in 1501 and were strong enough to take out all of their local enemies in under 20 years, and the byzantine empire was in civil war and would later be invaded by multiple european powers, the fact the safavids weren't even mentioned is kind of concerning. 15:39 You were way too generous in my opinion with how easily the byzantines defeated the hungarians. I dont think they could have won 2 wars one after the other like that, and once again, I don't get how the Safavids didn't try an invasion. Also, the byzantines were given land that isn't even hungarian so I think other parties would be involved in this war. 16:17 How could the byzantines sustain a colony in venezuela for so long even though in 1579, the area around venezuela had already been occupied by the spanish? 17:14 I dont think its realistic that the safavids could be distracted fighting in their eastern border as them and the Mughal Empire (dominant empire in india at this time) were in good terms + the natural boundaries of the empire would have likely repelled a big invasion like it happened. 21:26 The byzantines cold probably notve invaded sicily like that, austria would definetly be a larger threat as theyve shown us in our timeline during the great turkish war. 22:08 Same thing, also the rise of the Hotaks is just completely ignored. 23:46 The revolutionary events happened way to early 24:15 Napoleon didn't land in egypt? 25:46 I'm surprised that during the 1848 revolutions didn't spread onto the balkans, egypt or anatolia, as from what you've showed me, I thought that they didn't have the best treatment inside the empire. 26:55 Why didn"t the empire grab a seat in the Berlin Conference (strugle for africa)? 27:31 How did the russian revolution happen like that if Russia was winning the war?
@ponticgreekmapper1335
@ponticgreekmapper1335 10 ай бұрын
Okay so im actually gonna need this for my remastered video because you actually spotted a lot of things that actually don't make sense 😆 The only one I can explain is that the Russians in WW1 weren't really winning, its sorta like OTL here, and the poor living conditions led to the Revolution. Although thank you for the rest as I'll need to pay attention to those in my video

So I have a few questions 1. is the fake "North macedonia" not around in this timeline? 2. Who is Byzantium top 3 best allies and top 3 worst enemies 3. Lets say somehow Britain still gets their filthy hands on the parthenon marbles, how would byzantium go about it 4. What's is their global firepower ranking exactly? 5. And lastly would the Golden dawn (Χρυσή αυγή) still be around?
@ponticgreekmapper1335
@ponticgreekmapper1335 2 жыл бұрын
1. Nope, as you can see in the map the region is part of Byzantium 2. Hmm, good allies of Byzantium are Egypt, Kurdistan and Armenia. Serbia is also a good ally. Israel, Iran and Azerbaijan are its worst enemies 3. They don't get their hands on it, but even if they did Byzantium would put much more focus on retaking them 4. As mentioned in NATO they are the second strongest military power. Globally I would say maybe 5th-6th strongest military power. 5. Nope

@@ponticgreekmapper1335he Italian bros will be good allies maybe even WWII would have turned out so extremely different if this happened. Hitler would probably shit his pants trying to face this nation and Italy may never have tried anything against Greece perhaps they would even have allied with Greece. And the Roman connection between the two countries Italy and Greece would have been even stronger Moussilini would never have claimed to be a greater successor of Rome if Rome in the east literally was still alive, if he did anything then it would be to ally with Hellas I don’t think he would try go on war against a Greece like this one. You’re missing the point. Both Byzantium and Rome fell not because of a particular battle but because of internal political contradictions that prevented them from mustering the internal resources to surmount crises. The far smaller Roman Republic that crushed Carthage was stronger than the huge empire that lost to Alaric.
@ponticgreekmapper1335
@ponticgreekmapper1335 Ай бұрын
@@ndmmt-wu7kz That is true. However Byzantium here manaxes to slowly fix some internal issues (such as replacing the mercenary-based army with a "national" one by the 13th century) which strenghtened its position over time. Having won the battle which allowed it to restore Anatolia and hold the Empire all together, it could manage to slowly move into reforms. I know its a bit of an ideal scenario though

Amazing Alternate History Video @ponticgreekmapper1335! This has me questioning more about Rhomania's reputation and relationships with the rest of the world or mainly central Europe. I'm not sure if Rhomania (Byzantine) is a member of the European Union as there was no mention of it most likely because of political mishaps (perhaps not wanting to be caught in a debt crisis like OTL Greece) but can play a major role in trade for a non-EU country. In Africa, I believed that the relationship between Byzantine and Ethiopia would be much bigger and stronger for both countries in trade/military alliance purposes as both majority religions are Christian Orthodox (Byzantine would probably help play a part in keeping Ethiopia from being colonized and independent during the Scramble for Africa and help fight the Italians in East Africa Campaign during WW2.). In the Middle East, the United States would probably have a smaller influence than in our timeline as Arabia (All Unified Arabia Peninsula countries except Yemen) would work more positively with Byzantine as with the rest of the middle eastern countries except Iraq, falling under the influence of Iran so, Probably no 9/11, Iraq Invasion, or war in Afghanistan? Then again, the Islamic State Insurgency exists in this timeline just without Iraq and probably backed by Iran with more or less Islamic Republic. As for the relationship between the US and Byzantine, it would be both good and tense at times as it's interesting to see the 2 Western powers having different viewpoints and ideologies as the US supports Israel as a Western-backed country (More to gain influence and some oil) while Byzantine still recognizes Palestine as a country as well. Unlike OTL Turkey which is a NATO member for strategic purposes, Byzantine is a main pillar and founder of NATO and has more to say than just the US which can lead to a feud between the 2 of them as both are powers in their different regions.
@ponticgreekmapper1335
@ponticgreekmapper1335 Жыл бұрын
Hmm, you are analyzing some interesting concepts here. I will mostly stand on your mention of the Islamists. No, the Jihadists got little to no foreign support, they were just fighting on their own but easily managed to rise due to their successful campaigns and support from specific regions. The US-Byzantine relations were good during the Cold War but started to deteriote as USA has a more "progressive" western view unlike the Byzantine "Conservative" views in social issues, while also geopolitical differences exist (such as hostility in their interests in the M.East and the decent Byzantine-Russian relations) Byzantine influence in North Africa (Egypt, Sudan and Abyssinia) is strong due to their presence in Egypt for a long period of time, the Greek community of Alexandria and the Byzantine support to Abyssinia.

Wouldn't it all be Greek Speaking by the 20th century if they maintain control for so long? There would be no Bulgarians or Serbs. They would be integrated into the Greek identity and would be speaking Greek. I can see the Croats lingering since they are Catholic and wouldn't easily integrate, but if they are not turn into a vassal, either integration or genocide would still happen.

The Byzantine Empire wasn't largely concerned in assimilating into the Greek culture, which is why the Arabs still maintained Islam for the most part, and the Slavs in the Balkans kept their own identities. Although you make a valid point that there would have been greater assimilation

Way way too optimistic. The Byzies couldn't take over southern nor the whole Crimea from the Golden Horde. Fighting on so many fronts is exactly what is going to crush you. The general instability at home and the unrest in Anatolia which has to be assimilated into Hellenic and Orthodox culture wouldn't allow for that much expansion. Forget about conquering Bulgaria or Serbia. Hostility from the Mamlukes... In my opinion the most important thing is to avoid the Fourth Crusade and hope someone better than the Angeloi takes the throne and stabilizes the Empire. In any viabile scenario expansion is very slow. You make the Byzies win at Myriokephalon, I'd rather see them loose. Then a situation like 1204 my come. As you know Trebizond is founded before the Sack and if that was avoided and the Angeloi thrown down from the Palace then maybe Byzantium stands a chance. The Sultanate of Rum being invaded by Mongols and it crumbling little by little favors Byzantium as it could stabilize under a real dynasty and in time take over coastal Anatolia and make the Turks leave outside of it or Inner Anatolia. Anyway this is really hard and hostility from Bulgaria, Serbia and even Hungary has to be managed somehow. Also Emperor's word is law, the succesion has to become Primogeniture! Women should also be allowed to rule and suceded by the first born. All of this takes a lot of time by the way but it could have been achieved if lucky. Inner Anatolia has to retaken and the culture must change as will the habits. Turks will become Greeks in time and I assume this proces will be painful as Anatolia has to be guarded and garrisoned by troops who have to come from somewhere. Also Timur and 1402 but I suppose he would be fighting the beyiliks and weaken them even more as Byzantium wouldn't be able to retake all of Anatolia and instead it s lands there would be raided but Timur couldn't be able to cross and much less take Constantinople. After early 15th century if Byzantium is still around and if the venetians and the genoeses weren't as strong as in real life and if Bulgaria also weakens being between Serbia, Byzantium and Hungary and also it having been defeated by Mongols 200 years earlier and being unable to expand in the Balkans to destroy Byzantium but delay them, then the Byzies may start to look at ways to expand first into Anatolia and then into the Balkans. Albania and Bulgaria should be conquered and Serbia and Bosnia vassalized. Hungary would be a problem but they would be attracted more and more towards Austria only to fall eventually under a personal union with them. In this lucky vacuum Byzantium must act. Anatolia first. The real question is how do you get to keep all these places judging by how bad the Court was and also revelions and issues with the West and Persia, Mamlukes even Russia later on so... at some point this thing collapses as all empires do. I have a hard time thinking they get to Industrial Age as they were far too old in real and facing demographic decline in Anatolia before 1071 and overall bad at longterm unity under a single dynasty so they eventually were replaced and succeded in many respects by the Ottomans.
@ponticgreekmapper1335
@ponticgreekmapper1335 Жыл бұрын
Well generally the Byzantine Empire wad always at constant wars fighting on various fronts. In fact I think I was merciful on that aspect, as the Empire was usually much more busy. Lets not forget that the Ottomans, a much smaller tribe/state whatever secured much more territory in shorter amounts of time. Though I definitely agree with the succession issue. Its one of the key reasons behind the E.R.E's downfall. Trebizond was not created as the weird dynasty game that was played a month before the 4th crusade doesn't happen here, as the Emperor after 1203 stabilizes the situation (as far as I remember at least)
@BGDNMMI
@BGDNMMI Жыл бұрын
@@ponticgreekmapper1335 The thing is Byzantium would never be able to stabilize so rapidly and then retake this much amount of land and get to keep it. The state was too decadent in 1203. Also the way the court worked favoured the Angeloi but I guess you could make an Emperor different then any other mentioned. Then Anatolia which is to most important place in the Puzzle has to be returned and that will take time. It is Turkish and Muslim, yeah it is divided but too big to be retaken and assimilated that rapidly. It will take decades of violent efforts and suppresion. Basicaly all the proces that started after 1071 has to be revarsed at least 75%...
