Many Apologies ! I made a mistake and huge thank you to everyone for mentioning that I used the incorrect way and I described the Grind adjustment poorly. You in fact turn the hopper, with the static ring attached - and this will point to your grind dial. No issues there and very easy to adjust.

I have this new model already for 5 months. Changes from gen1: 1) narrowed the rpm range (start from 800 instead of 600) - official df64 response: grinder wasn’t coping properly with 600 rpm; 2) one-piece chute - for me, definitely an improvement - easily to remove and put back; 3) plasma generator - zero result, you NEED to use rdt, rods of the generator very quickly getting clumped with coffee particles, it is also noisy and df64 aware of the issue, which reported by multiple users; 4) plastic declumper inside the chute is also changed, can’t really say if for better. PS: and finally, the author was using grind change WRONG, he was turning lid instead of outer collar, that is why he also didn’t see there is actual a grind size mark on that collar😊

I'm an owner of DF64V gen 2 and as some already mentioned in the comments below, Josh was adjusting the grindsize by turning the wrong collar, which is meant to loosen the top to access the burrs. That outer collar is supposed to be screwed all the way down before using. Seeing a gap between the body and the top part of the grind was already sounding an alarm. The grindsize adjustment is done by turning the smaller collar and yes there is a ring that you can adjust to mark where is your "0" point so you always know where you are, no additional marking required. And regarding the taste notes difference between 1100 and 1800 rpm, I don't know how valid is that considering he didn't even tightened the outer collar completely.

I would use a hot start, slow feed of the beans and high RPM - and that's assuming you're talking about the very lightest of roasts - I've heard issues with staling on the beans - but this can be avoided with using those 3 managing principles mentioned.

I became a DF64v Gen1 owner largely thanks to your review of it. I am a little confused why you were turning the outer collar to adjust the grind size. Did they change the adjustment mechanism on the Gen2? On the Gen1 you tighten the collar all the way and then turn the hopper to adjust the grind size. The small aluminium ring is used to adjust the zero point.

PS: I have this new model already for 5 months.

Nice video. I've been using the DF64v Gen 1 since about February of this year. I'm lucky to have had experience with quite a few grinders and it has impressed me for sure. Mine has not stalled, even with light roasts and espresso grind at 600rpm on 230v UK with the slow feeder disc. On the note of RPM, I'm not sure I can detect much of a difference in the taste. The grinder is very stable in shot time and increasing the RPM without changing the grind size always speeds shots up, if I counter/compensate that with a grind change, I'm not sure I can detect much difference. Certainly, lower RPM shot on espresso didn't seem to ooze any more clarity as the notion would suggest. The removable chute being 2 piece I find very nice to clean if you're a bit OCD, & with RDT, there's basically no static. Will be interesting to see how their new CF64 does (vertical burrs and auger fed).

I have the V2, and use the SSP Lab Sweet v3 burrs. It's very forgiving for espresso. (and I mess up the puck prep a lot).😂 Most importantly, this machine is almost always consistent. The only issues are the slow feeder often retains a bean (just turn the grinder off then on, to make it drop) and the plasma generator is "on" regardless of the machine's "on/off" status... I just switch the unit off at the wall, but it's worth pointing-out.

I think the gen 2 of this grinder is a failure. I have the gen 1 and it has an amazing alignment out of the box. The plasma generator works extremely well for me, i never had to use RDT with it at all, ever, and it is pretty much 0 retention for me. The chute breaks into 2 separate parts, making it super easy to maintain. The metal declumper works well, but i do WDT so whether there is a declumper or not, it is not relevant to me. Come time i bought the V2, out of the box, it was fine. However, the alignment is horrendous. Inside, it has two plastic declumper for whatever reason. These declumpers create so much resistance that the grounds end up being regrounded, making grinding extremely long and producing a ridiculous amount of fines. I took the declumpers off, and that helped. Then, the plasma generator has a very annoying coil whine that would never shut up. The chute is now one singular piece, which getting inside of it to clean is now a challenge that i didn't even bother with. Needless to say, i returned the grinder for a full refund. The 2nd generation is a nightmare to work with. If you have the gen 1, keep it, it's a whole lot better than the gen 2, unfortunately.

As always your presentations are second to none.. . I bought my DF54 not too long ago from you. I am happy with it, however I find that 'home' grinders are somewhat of a mystery to consumers that typically don't really get to try them out and compare coffee etc. What I'm wondering, if I'm making an expresso daily and sometimes more, is there an upgrade that makes a distinct difference, without jumping into commercial gear that would be overkill for a daily grind or so? Perhaps an idea for a video, if you've not done so recently. Cheers!

Hi Josh, thanks for introducing the new DF64V gen 2! I have a couple of observations/question (for you or others) from my side. I have the DF64V gen 1, but with the supposedly improved initially faulty board, so my gen 1 should stall less. - My gen 1 has an rpm range of 600 - 1800 rpm, so it has actually a wider range than the gen 2? Is that because they maybe couldn't / didn't want to fix the stalling at 600 - 700 rpm? Just out of curiosity, did you get any stalling with hard beans at 800 rpm? - Although mine is supposed to have the "improved board" compared to the first batches produced, I still got the occasional stalls at 600 rpm. I exclusively do hot feeding btw., and hot slow feeding for all light-medium roasts. I normally grind filter beans at 700 rpm, still had a stall or two in the last months. - I don't think I like the closed, single-piece chute. It looks harder to clean than the 2-part one. When I grind coarse and without RDT for a cupping session, I get lots of grounds stuck around the chute (inside and out). Taking just the outer part off and using a brush to quickly brush the grinds off the inside of the chute before I grind the next sample is easy, the single chute might complicate this. - As for the wooden stand, it's a "design headache" alright, but I actually came to like it. I *never* grind into a portafilter anyway, even with other grinders, so that's not an issue for me. On the contrary, being able to put my Rhinoware cupping bowls on the stand is much more of a benefit to me. Plus, my MHW-3Bomber blind shaker fits perfectly on that base and I grind right into it, super easy. - I would be interested to know whether the gen 2 is less messy when you grind at coarse level without RDT compared to the gen 1. How well does the ionizer do its job when you compare the 2? - For those for you who don't need the improvements: the prices for the gen 1 are already dropping.
@AlternativeBrewing2 ай бұрын
Hi Stephan - thanks so much for your sharing your experience so far 🙌 No Stalling at 800rpm for my espresso grind. Wouldn't say they're hard beans though - a hot start, slow feed. I did discover some stuttering at fine grinds (otherwise useless for brewing) and dumping 30-50g in the hopper at once. Unfortunately I haven't been able to compare the two Generations side-by-side. The RPM change & slow bean feeder - (which no doubt could be a mod to the Gen1) is something I imaging they've introduced to avoid unnecessary stalling. The Ionizer - this is even to me - a little bit of a mystery that I have no real knowledge of testing. You can hear a slight hum when the grinder is on - I suspect that is the Ionizer working - though in all my efforts to dig deeper on the Ionizer - i dont have any useful information to share on these Im afraid! I'm yet to see too many grinders at all, cope with coarse grinds and no RDT. My experience is - it'll largely depend on the design of chute to catch cup, and the knocker to ensure cleanliness here. The Option-O Lagom Casa is my standout for this - but it's low capacity, conical burrs and no RPM adjustment.

why does this Gen2 feel like a downgrade compared to 1st gen? chute being 1 piece makes it harder to clean, the plasma generator isn't really all that useful for us that uses water spray, and the adjustment knob is now on the bottom cover instead of the top, which means your 0 point is no longer in the middle, and the lowest RPM is now 800 instead of 600.

No way to achieve consistency with this grinder. We tested 3 of them among some friends and nothing. Always retains 1 or 2 beans. And the dial is moving while grinding. I think you're jumping to conclusions. How do you know it's a "complete failure" if you don't know what it's like without the plasma generator functioning? That aside for a moment, being able to clear the shoot and bur chamber so easily is a good thing, right? As far as RDT goes, if you're going to grind beans, you're going to get static. RDT just mitigates the worst of it. I don't see why you wouldn't use it, even on a machine that has been designed to reduce static. To conclude, I reckon the feature set on offer for the price is pretty impressive. Even if like myriad other grinders it produces some static.
@lgxiii2 ай бұрын
@@space.youtube I would be more than happy this device remove static so the RDT is not necessary. Just show it in review. The purpose of RDT is to remove static during grinding. Some beans produce static, some don’t. I don’t buy static beans to avoid this. No needs to add steps in routine when not needed.
