Alternatives to the Canon AE-1 - Kamerastore

My mother gave me her 1977 AE-1 in 1999 and I still love it and use it often. I was gifted a Pentax ME-Super by a friend in 2006 and it is very comparable and an excellent alternative.

I have the Minolta X-700 and the Olympus OM-2. Both are superb SLR's with a great range of affordable lenses.

Having started my journey with the K1000, the camera that I bought while at school, I stuck with the Pentax brand and K mount by upgrading to the ME Super and then the SuperA before jumping ship to Canon at the start of the EOS AF era. Pentax lagged so far behind Canon in introducing AF, much like now with interchangeable lens mirrorless systems. Now I shoot a mixture of Canon EF/RF and Leica SL. I still have my ME Super and it still works though I don’t use it much.

You have shown some if the best cameras of its time. I still like 35mm slr far better than any digital camera in the market. The medium format film camera are a close second. While digital is nice and have their uses but still 35mm and medium format produces better prints and are more fun to shoot. Film cameras also force the user to actually lean better about photography.

Funny that you pulled out the Konica. I have one of those. Bought it in 1972 and still get it out often. I also have two of the Pentax K1000 cameras. Several old cameras have come to me as I have come to be known as a good retirement home for them.

I was deciding between the A-1 and the AE-1. I went with the A-1 since I already had my AE-1 Program from 1984. I went for the A-1 due to aperature prioity mode verses another shutter priority camera.

Great video! A responsible look at reasonable alternatives. I wish more people were willing to consider other options. Canon AE-1 and Pentax K1000 are touted as the best beginner cameras. Great cameras but there are so many other options. Their popularity push the prices to stupid level. I can find a Nikon F3 for less than an AE-1 (in like condition) and the F3 is superior to the AE-1 in every category except weight. Once again, great video.

Great video, but on the flip side of this. It's the popularity of the AE-1 that's keeping these other cameras (which are mostly better) so affordable because they're so overlooked.

I would say a true alternative to the AE-1 needs to have auto exposure of some kind, and the Fujis/Yashicas capable of AE are just too uncommon and unreliable for me to recommend to people! I did also mention that there are many other great cameras that I didn't talk about in the video! We could be here all day talking about great SLRs. Thanks for watching! - Connor

Very good Video! The Minolta X300 is very good as well. It has the same amazing viewfinder that the x500 has. I like it a lot. I restored an Olympus om2n for my girlfriend and she absolutely loves the camera! and I do as well. With the 50mm 1.4 zuikos with thorium glass... very good one. I have and use mostly canon fd glass and body’s and what I can recommend in terms of being similar to the AE-1 but even better and not known by many is the EF Body. It is as one of you in your videos pointed out known as the black beauty and for a good reason that is. I think that in terms of the amount of money that you have to spend compared to the performance you get out of the system; Minolta wins the race by far. Something like the X300 with an 35mm 1.8 and a 58mm 1.4 pf. very nice glass!

Thanks for watching, Nils! The X-300 does have the notification of what shutter speed you have selected, but it lacks the aperture window that the X-500 and X-700 have. Still a super great camera, especially paired with those MD lenses. The older ones, like the 58/1.4 you mentioned, were some of the first (and best) multi-coated lenses out there! Minolta was double coating their lenses while everyone else was single coating, so they always had an advantage when it came to color science, contrast, and flare reduction. Their partnership with Leica in the 1970s certainly didn't hurt, either! - Connor
