Thanks for the video! My daughter has one of these abortions and it stalled on her down town. Took cables and tester along and sure enough dead alternator. Took it home, typed 2002 ford focus alternator replace into you tube and landed here. I much appreciate your time on this vid. Saved me countless curse words and time. Completed in a shorter time no doubt than had I not viewed your post, I highly recommend this prior to doing this job if you have never done an alternator on one of these jalopies. I would never recommend buying one. Thumbs up!

I just removed my alternator without moving the engine at all. Move the EGR(metal lines) lines out of the way, and you can pull the alternator out through the top with the pulley facing upwards. Its a super tighter fit but it can be done and saves a lot of time

Great Video. I found the exact same thing. You are the only one who pointed out the slots that the Alternator rest in. You are correct it is snug and hard to pry out but that is what you have to do. Loosten the bolts and pry it up.. The bolts do not need to come out. Also I took the mount bolts and Dog bone bolt underneath and ratchet strapped it forward to get better room. Much appreciated pointed out things that was not clear on other videos, his car has been a nightmare. If ithelps others, quick tip, careful prying from the top as the timing chain cover is plastic and the slightest bit of pressure will crack it. Lol now i got that to deal with, lessons learned i guess.

A tip for getting the alt out when very stuck is to use a long pipe, screwdriver, punch...tap the alt up from below to work that bottom half of the alt loose. Mine wouldn't pry from the top and there is just so many ways that can go wrong...lets just say this doesn't take as much muscle either! If you are intending to drop the alt as in the other youtube video...it appears the 05 pictured in video is different than 03' slightly. The aluminum mount must be removed as well as oil filter and I suggest loosening second engine mount as well. Also, prepare for the bolts to be corroded and tight. Spray well ahead of time and be sure to use a 6 point 10mm socket. I bought a flex head 3/8 drive ratchet specifically for this job. Needed the extra length and flex to make this job easier. Hope it makes the job easier for the next person.

Thanks for the video, we'll done. I found undoing the passenger side motor mount and having my wife wedge it forward with a crow bar, then taking it out from the bottom to be pretty easy.

2 years old but helped a lot. Had mine out in an hour...showing lifting on the belt to 'pull' the tensioner simplified alot. Saved not getting under car and having to ramp or jack. Thanks . Hardest part was freeing from the cradle. That and also couldnt get battery bolt off, as new alt has the plastic extension I just snapped old one to remove the alt. Deal with removing the nut with alt out and open space. Didn't loosen the motor mount but was able to get alternator out. Hoping that gravity will aid in dropping back in. Though it 'might' be simpler to stuff from underneath then position from above. Started raining so install new alt tomorrow. Just wanted to 'like'. Watching different vidioes I was expecting it to be a lot more difficult.

Lil late but it actually dropped in fairly easy from top. The friction pads on alt aren't inplay on new alt so more room to get into cradle verse prying it out. I was able to feed bottom bolt-seems that where some have issues-not sure why space seems tighter on some of these cars.

Thank you for the video! Unfortunately, had to drop the alternator through the bottom. I have a 2003 SE. I also had to pull the engine forward as much as possible to get the alternator out. The whole process was a real pain in my @ss. Thanks again.

I broke a front passenger brake line on my 03 focus (Dohc vin-3 zetec)& I am trying to replace it but, everything is in the way! That round thing which you removed at about the 2 minute mark of your video, it is mounted directly behind the power steering reservoir, It has fuel lines running from it, to the engine, I cannot get the small line that is on top, looks like a vacuum line, I cant get it removed, I really wish that you recorded just how you removed that piece? You say to squeeze the tabs of the fuel line but, nothing about the vacuum line???? Any help is greatly appreciated...Nevermind Sir, I used pb blaster to lube it up & with the assistance of a flat head screw driver, I got it moving & got it removed! Thank you for having that in your video!

Everybody call these cars all kind of bad names. I had a 2002 Zetec and drove it to about 250,000. It was still running great when I got rid of it. Even the automatic trans worked great. Just because it's a bit of a challenge the way a tiny car has a lot crammed into it. You guys need to find some old ' 52 Buicks that are still usable and drive them. What do you expect?

I have a very hard time understanding why someone would disconnect the negative battery cable to change an alternator? The alternator has a positive wire & a wire harness that will need to be disconnected from it & if that power cable touches the firewall or the block or anything metal, THERE WILL BE SPARKS! I DISCONNECT THE POSATIVE WHEN CHANGING MY ALTERNATOR ON MY FUCUS!!! OR DISCONNECT THE ENTIRE BATTERY/BOTH POS & NEG! I WOULDN'T RISK JUST DISCONNECTING THE NEG BECAUSE THE POS WIRE ON THE ALTERNATOR CAN EASILY TOUCH METAL!!!

Yes true but with ground Disconnected it shouldn't spark regardless, at least in my 22yrs as a mechanic, however removing both is a sure thing so i agree with your decision to do so.

Useless video. You don't show the alternator ACTUALLY coming out. You shouldn't skip ahead, that's what an instructional video is for. And what about the A/C needing a recharge after disconnection??
