Oh you black Americans. Only you would think to take one of the hardest choir/group songs ever written and make it harder...and so much better. I've done both versions of this song and the amount of breath control and perfect pitch needed to make it sound like this and to perform it with effortless ease is so much more difficult to do than Handel's original version. But boy is it worth it. Kudos to Quincy. Maestro and genius.

Freedom School had me singing this song everyday, regardless of it not being a religious afterschool program. I would love to find any of the kids that were in the program with me or even the people who used to run the program. I didn't like this song when we were forced to sing it but I promise it brings so much joy to me now as an adult.

We got this album (Handel's Messiah - A Soulful Celebration) as part of our CD club about 12 years ago because we didn't cancel the monthly selection in time. So glad we didn't! This CD (thankfully, still in print and available on Amazon), is a joyful and unique treatment of Messiah. Sheet music available, too. We play it all year round because it is just good stuff!

I cannot believe I found this!!! Late 80s or early 90s I think I owned this cassette tape. Possibly CD form. Listened to all the movements over and over but THIS ONE. I must have listened to this movement 200 times (not even joking!) God bless you all for your contribution to musical history! Coming from a chorus person- most memorable moments of this one (not even talking about these AMAZING CHORUS VOICES!!! Anyone who has been in a chorus realizes the ENORMITY of these voices) 1) The breakdown with male voices -‘THE KINGDOM OF HIS WORD... just gorgeous. 2) everyone who is singing is energetic and singling their parts... so great to see! 3) and then - you have these gorgeous dynamics of the King is kings and lord of lords going from p to fff and back down and back up again. Seriously guys- if anyone that sang this 20 years ago- YOU INSPIRED ME SO MUCH with my walk with the Lord. 20 + years later. What a treat!!!

I learned this version to sing in a back up choir that included guest singers like Carman and Avalon. I practiced this with the background tape in my car where ever I went, I mean like straight for a month. My daughter who was 4 at the time sighed after one of my practice sessions in the car, saying, “Mommy? Ha-Yay-Yu-ya all gone?” Lol she was ready for me to be done. Haha!
