It goes into the theme of war with "chain mail" and "your heart wears knight armour" and "I'll hum the song soliders sing" Here is my interpretation of the song, It's about missing someone who's gone to war they are "pining" for them, but maybe it's also the arrow's "hunger to kill" they feel their loved one is in danger from the "pine" though I'm not sure pining makes grammatical sense, as: pining= longing pine= long hunger of the long (?)

This is what I felt surviving a mental illness. Manic depression from a brain injury. Every emotional blow was ten times the emotions it should have been and I felt like I was constantly wounded. I was always pouring compassion into others while I tried healing my incredible pain. My heartaches created constant sufferings, from others who betrayed or tried to hurt me and childhood. I would cry for hours regularly and then I made it all stop. You feel very triumphant when you heal something that severe. Like a king or a great warrior pulling yourself through every devastating experience. Every arrow a emotional wound aimed to break you down. But you keep running to survive to be strong to give your soul strength. To end the suffering. Until you're not afraid of death and rebirth anymore. You're not afraid of it. You have conquered the suffering. The arrows don't scare you and you're willing to feel them through and you won't let them take your soul. You'll go down by your own strength not any others. In other words no one gets to take you down only you. Therefore you are victorious. You'll fight until the end and you'll reach release on your own terms.

This reminds me of the story of Chiron. The half mortal, half immortal centaur (Saggitarius) who gets wounded and his mortal side feels the pain but his immortal side won't allow him to die. Eventually he accepts the pain and requests that Zeus allow him to become fully mortal and just die. Moved, Zeus turns him fully immortal instead. Zeus here is represented by the physical laws of science and chemistry: arrows and fire. On his quest for a cure before he accepts his predicament, Chiron heals many others. This is represented by us the watchers of the video, and our relationship to the man on the screen helping us process pain of some kind by providing catharsis. The fire represents either death or immortality.

My wonderful partner died last year of the cancer that he had had for ten years and had struggled to heal from. He liked alt J and this was one of his favourite songs and I remember him showing me this video. Like Chiron he was a very gifted teacher who worked with special needs children who often had suffered trauma and like Chiron he had a wound himself (derived from trauma from his childhood that manifested itself in cancer) that in the end he submitted to.(he refused the treatment by the end, as it was ruining his body and causing a lot of suffering) He was born in the critical degree of Sagittarius. I told him the story of Chiron and how Zeus made him immortal and placed him in the stars. I feel he played out this deep Sagittarian myth in his life, expressing the highest of Sagittarian values. He will always be immortal to me......but boy, I wish he was still with us.

Kevin G Just because their style is different doesn't make them fucking legends or something. There's loads and loads of bands with unique styles, who are far more revolutionary and creative. Just look at Animal Collective, who have done it for about 13 years now and surpass Alt-J in every way. Currently Alt-J are just another good band in the ever-increasing indie rock scene. I like Alt-J and I hate to criticise them, but to say they're even close to one of the most iconic or popular bands of this generation is moronic. It's great to see them experimenting with unique sounds and structures, but they're not even similar to Pink Floyd, and they're hardly doing anything significantly new.

Nabil's imagery is powerful here and he did a great job with this video. The openness of the interpretation is so great with this. My interpretation is that this shows a man's walk (run) through life (the forest and field) while dealing with issues of this world (the arrows) that leads him to depression and self-sabatoge (pouring gasoline on himself) to accept his fate and end it all on his own terms (turning around to the wave of flaming arrows without running). You know what I'm hinting at. The forest symbolizes our teen years where we were cared for by others and even though there were hardships, we had (if we were fortunate enough) family to help take care of them. The arrows would hit the trees (our family) and block most of the shots. The field the man runs into symbolizes us leaving the comforts and protections of our family; moving out to live on our owns. There's no trees to block the arrows. Everything falls on us to outrun or withstand the arrows ourselves. The gasoline is him drained/depressed and ready to end it all. Several years ago when I was working in Alaska I would sometimes take a kayak out with some cigarettes, a six pack, and a joint.
